Command line - connect to wireless

Has anyone heard of or know of a command line script I could execute in XP's command line to connect to my wireless network, bypassing Zero Config?
I can do it easily in linux, but I've never seen anything similar in dos.

I do my benches with windows closed during the winter, and with the case covers closed (You know, normal working environment?) The lowest sustained idle air-cooled temperature (i.e. not jumping around) I got on the CPU was 5C.
Whatever. As long as it's harmless fun.

How to enable Purevideo feature in Nvidia Geforce 6 and 7 series cards

I stumbled across this article while trying to find benchmark figures:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/170
I didn't know that 2D video enhancement features are not enabled by default on Geforce 6 and 7 cards, and I've had one of those cards for quite a while now.
So if you actually care about that, go read the article.

Everybody needs to take a break every once in a while.
Date: 01/07/07

Someone gave a ticked-off response to the computer build pics that I posted. It was in a forum that's not as active as this one so I didn't think it would cause any uproar there either (that forum had no rules listed in the userinfo). I was not-exactly-cordially asked to show what I can do and not what I can buy. I'm posting this just in case someone here was equally bothered by the photos of my computer.
The following is the clarification response I gave.
It's a hobby. Goodness' sakes.
Something reared it's ugly head, I suppose. Oh well.
Well, since you asked-
My office is on the 6th floor of the SC12 design building in Santa Clara, California, at Intel's headquarters. You can see the front of the building in one of these photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/49617622@N00/sets/72157594215055118/
I am a microprocessor mask layout designer working in the central standard cell library design team. The projects I have worked on over the last six years (7th year sabbatical eligibility is in March):
Timna (integrated processor- AMD was not the first to implement such a thing. Intel had it on the production line and simply shelved it. It was cancelled)
Montecito (IA-64)
Banias (first Pentium M. I had the inverter family, which was the highest usage family in the library. That means a large portion of the logic was covered by my cells. Relatively easy work, but important work)
Dothan (Pentium M, I only did minor verification work)
Prescott iteration of P4
Tejas iteration of P4 (cancelled, and it was already taped out. In a way it was kind of discouraging since I did a ton of work and I trained two people for it too, but in retrospect it was definitely the right move for Intel to make)
Merom (Core 2, essentially same derivation for Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest. Can't say any more than that)
Penryn (Merom shrink)
Nehalem (I can mention the name because it's already been printed over the web)
Westmere, Gesher (They've also been mentioned. I wonder who in the world are leaking these things... A lot of the times I don't even know what in the world I'm working on exactly. I just worry about the physical layout design of the devices and paths after being handed the schematics. Two months ago I was given the opportunity to work on some fub level stuff so I saw much more circuit on my screen. That wasn't very fun... those fub-level people can keep their jobs and I can keep mine, thanks much. Maybe I'll occasionally go on rotation but there's no way I'm transferring to a fub layout team. Ironically I get more info on our projects from the internet than from inside the company. Then again, a lot of the rumors they print are ridiculous and amusing- The nVidia merger, for example. That reminded me of the April Fools joke they had on the company intranet site about the Apple merger)
By the way, regarding "how much money"... I didn't exactly spend a whole lot, since the E6700 is an engineering sample that the company loaned me. I wouldn't have bothered building a machine if I have to actually buy the chip. As for the rest, they're bargain components. The keyboard for example was only $14, the monitor $240 (recently dropped to $210), the graphics card $169 (recently dropped a whopping $20 to $149), the power supply I got for free after rebate (which is why it isn't giving enough voltage and I have to get a replacement if I don't want something to break), the speaker/case/soundcard was around $35 each. These systems could generally be built for under $1000, and I think people know that.
Yes, it took a lot of work- to research for the lowest prices on the best parts for the performance/value metric. It's true that any Joe off the street could have gotten something big with a big budget, but it did take work and some workarounds (The 7.1 was really a "5.1+2") to get it relatively inexpensively.
Again, this is a hobby project, something to amuse myself with on evenings and weekends away from my job.
I hope this clarifies things.
I forgot to mention a project that I worked on during Nehalem timeframe. I can't mention the name though since I don't see it printed anywhere.
On another note, I have heard of Larabee discussed inside the company. I don't know much about it though. What I have heard I can't say either.

While My Hard Drive Gently Weeps
Date: 01/06/07
Keywords: no keywords
I've got a bit of a problem with my four-year-old computer.
My second hard drive (the 120-gig data drive) is randomly spinning down and back up while the machine is on. I believe this to be a serious fault, indicating that it's about to fail for good, so I've turned the machine off and will be keeping it off until I've found a way to fix this problem or I've got another computer to put the drive in so I can off-load my gigabytes of music, pictures, TV shows, and nonsense.
If any of you guys have had this happen before and can suggest a temporary stopgap so that I can keep on using my system, please let me know. I've heard about putting a drive in the freezer to cool it down and shrink the platters, but I'm not sure that would work since this seems to be a problem with the mechanisms that move the platters and not the platters themselves.

WHAT?!?! (EPS 12V)
Date: 01/04/07

"...Even if the motherboard works with a 4 pin 12 volt cable, you are still only providing half of the current carrying capacity which would be provided by an 8 pin EPS cable. That can overheat both the motherboard connector and 4 pin cable. Scorched or melted connectors can be a result."
I just plugged the 4pin into the 8pin. Looks like I'll have to get one of those expensive EPS 12V supplies before I could do any overclocking. Pbbt. In the meantime I'm getting a 4-8 converter cable to temporarilly stem the voltage drop.
I guess I'm lucky that nothing melted so far.
(I know that "dual core CPU" as in "two cores on a single die" could probably be counted as one CPU instead of two, but I'm not going to take chances with this expensive thing)
Blah, heading further into overbudget territory. I wish MB/CPU manufacturers could make a bigger deal out of EPS by printing (in BIG CAPITALIZED LETTERS) "USE EPS 12V SUPPLY OR THINGS COULD MELT ON YOU"

Web Calendar Software...does this exist?
Date: 01/02/07
Keywords: php, software, web, microsoft
Hi, I'm looking for some commercial software, more specifically, a calendar that can be hosted on a webserver, accessed and edited by multiple users, give the admin different control levels, and have a ton of room for customization. I'm doing web development for a non profit organization.
Here is the problem, everything that I've provided and shown my boss is either 1. not *pretty* or professional looking enough or 2. not what he needs (canned software that can't be customized enough to fit his organization's needs.
I've tried to tell him that other than having a small company develop the program entirely from scratch, there is not really anything else we can really do.
The closest thing I've come to his approval is the calendar available at http://www.mhsoftware.com, but he doesn't like the day view mode of the calendar.
I've told him instead of shelling out all kinds of cash for software to be developed specifically for him we instead could use certain elements of the calendar and the rest could be php scripts containing forms, tables, etc. Well he still has me looking so what I want to know is, has anyone seen a commercially available calendar application that can be hosted on the web and have a ton of room for customization?
Cost doesn't seem to be an issue either.
The example he gave me of what he wishes it to be like is his calender on...AOL. :(
The biggest problem is this is an exact copy of the email I get from this organizations office when I presented them with a letter similar to this.
"I THINK WE SHOULD GO WITH THE MICROSOFT - I FEEL SURE IT WOULD MEET OUR NEEDS FOR THE TIME BEING."
That was the email I got...wow. I'll call MS right up and have them get to work on the application...It's becoming a real problem trying to get them to understand anything.
Thanks for any help x-posted to a few other places.

I can't believe the number of hoops I have to jump through in order to even get an internet connection working on a Kubuntu distribution. Right now I don't have it working even though I've been working on a solution all day
It looks like I'm hardly the only one having problems with this- FAR from it
http://www.google.com/search?q=marvell+gigabit+lan+ubuntu&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
...and this is not even counting getting the graphics card to work right. That's for later!
I don't have any more excess energy to deal with this crap today... I'm just going to install Vista 64-bit RC2 in another partition and be done with it
This is the reason why so many people aren't on Linux yet. At least LAST time I had an internet connection when trying Ubuntu on my older notebook. This is utterly ridiculous. Worst comes to worst I'll just format the partition Kubuntu is installed on into NTFS again and call it a day.

good video editing software
Date: 12/31/06
Keywords: software
i am in need of some good video editing software. i am sick of having to use like 4 programs to do what i want! i have a digital camera that takes video in .mov format. i need to edit that down (cut off the ends) and maybe lighten the gamma a little sometimes, and convert that into a usable .flv file that's relatively small, like youtube does. i have found that if i uploaded the .mov file directly to youtube, the sound and picture are off so i don't want that.
i installed a flash movie player on my site and i downloaded all the stuff i had previously uploaded to youtube and each file (about 3 minutes) was less than 10mb. whenever i try to use a program to convert to .flv (i have tried a number: riva, winmpgconvert, supersomething) it either doesn't let me edit the file (ie cut off the beginning and end) or the output is huge (50mb or more) or both. sooooooooooooo i would like software that can do all this for me!
sorry if this is confusing! thanks for your help in advance!

wefeelfine screensaver?

Keywords: programming, html, java, web
i am in love with www.wefeelfine.org, and ever since i fell in love with it i've thought it would make a spectacular screensaver, but i can't seem to figure out a feasible way to do so
there are several programs that allow you to use a website as a screensaver but the problem is that once the site is loaded java says something along the lines of "please click on this applet to focus" - which means that nothing displays and the purpose is defeated
does anybody have any ideas of how to get around this? or how i could get some sort of wefeelfine.org screensaver?
the author wishes for the same thing:
Unfortunately, the "please click here to focus" is a property of a java applet and not something we programmed in.
Sorry about that!

wefeelfine_noclick.html or something like that?

quick questions

If I'm on a networked mac---I live on the campus where I work and my computer is plugged into the school's network---can others see what I'm doing on my computer? I don't have to log in to my computer, but I do have to log into the web. Would spying on me require installing software on my computer? If so, is there any way of figuring out whether or not I have that software on my laptop?
Do you think certain websites would set off some sort of alarm with the IT office---or streaming videos or the like?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me with this!

Processes yes, applications nope
Date: 12/29/06
Keywords: no keywords
Has this ever happened to you? You click open a program and you wait and wait and wait and after a while you click again, and again. But the program doesn't start. Then you call up the taskbar to see what the heck is happening and you see in the processes tab it seems hundreds of versions of the program are sucking up your computer's memory (one process for each time you clicked the shortcut) but in the application tab there is nil--nada, zilch. Program just doesn't start.
Usually what I do at this point is reboot the computer and hope that the problem resolves by itself. And if it doesn't, I reinstall the application. But seeing as I'm a member of this community of smart people, I figured I'd ask if anyone has seen this before or knows why it is happening. If I can understand what causes the glitch, then I can perhaps take steps to avoid it next time.
Oh, ps, my operating system is Windows XP.

Okay, so for Christmas my father built me a computer, he does this. haha.
And Everything on the computer is fine and all, but for some reason it keeps freezing up after I've been on it for awhile. Like it completely freezes and I have no choice but to press the on/off button to turn it off and I heard that's not good for the computer so it sucks that I keep having to do so.
My question to you guys is, what should I do? Should I let him restore it or something? This sucks so bad! :(
thank-you so much in advance.
