Pentium D and Celeron D Multitasking Performance Comparison
Date: 02/19/06
Keywords: no keywords
Anyone knows any good articles on the subject?
I mean some kind of testing regarding performance of modern Pentium and Celeron processors when running multiple tasks at the same time? I have seen plenty of reviews but all of them include running one program of certain type per test. Anyone saw something like running a game and compressing a video file at the same time and then comparing results?
I need some numerical proof that Pentiums handle heavy multitasking better.

Camcorder to Computer

Hey guys
My friend recently gave me his old Sony CCDTRV16 Hi8 Handycam Camcorder. What I'm trying to do is transfer whatever I record from the camcorder to my PC (for video editing), if that's even possible at all with this camcorder. Lastly, is it even worth it, or should I just opt for a newer digital camcorder? Thanks.
If it helps, I'm running xp pro on a dimension.

feeling stupid, but - if I'm linking thumbnails in a frame to appear in another frame full size, how do I position the image, set the background, etc. for where the picture appears?
there has to be a quick and easy way sans creating an entirely new page for every image. or maybe not.

group calendars
Date: 02/15/06
Keywords: software
Hi all,
I've been asked to setup a group oriented calendar program so that various teachers can see each others schedules. Normally this isn't a big deal, but we have some complications. For starters, half the computers are mac, half are PC. The ability to import and export from various email clients like outlook or thunderbird is important. The ability to sync from handhelds to these clients is also important. Most of what I've found either don't support importing, which would lead to much double-entry, or they are bundled into very large software packages like Exchange which we don't need. I've been looking at Mozilla Sunbird, but I've run into some issues getting that to talk to the handhelds.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hard drive failure?

I've got a 40gb hard drive right now. I've been thinking of upgrading to a 150gb or perhaps a 200gb hard drive, but I keep hearing horror stories like this, especially with the newer-end, high-capacity models. Is this something to be concerned about or am I just paranoid?

Oh Em Eff Gee ._.

My life. Is over. Here's the problembo. I had two hard drives in my computer. A smaller 20 gig one, and a bigger 200 gig one. The 20 GB one held my OS, my apps and a few games. So I recently acquired a 120 GB hard drive, so I switched out my 20 one with the 120 one. I installed WinXP, everything went smooth and fine. Until I tried to access some of the files on my 200 GB hard drive, it said they were corrupt. This upset me, and I wasn't in the mood to play around, so I put the 20 GB one back in. So as I was booting up, I got the wonderful WinXP error that wanted to check my 200 GB hard drive for consistency...Fine, whatever. So it did. Windows booted up. ALL MY FILES WERE GONE. No more. All my mp3s. All my ROMs/ISOs (( Perfectly legal ones at that >> )) All my Movies. All my Games. This made me want to kill everything in sight, but I cracked out Stellar Phoenix NTFS and tried to recover the lost files, but to no avail. For the love of all that is holy. If anyone could help me at all, please do so. Thanks in advance

protected WMAs
Date: 02/11/06
Keywords: no keywords
my brother is at ASU, and they have a dl-ing program called Ruckus. it's apparently a legal thing. the files come as protected WMAs, and he wants to know if there's a good program, either freeware or shareware (preferrably under 20$) to unprotect the music. i'm not exactly sure why he wants to unprotect them, but he does. he said he'll have 4200 songs by the end of the day, but he's not keeping them all.
so if anyone knows a good program, wanna help a fellow geek out?!
oh yeah, and he's on a PC running XP, with some sort of Pentium processor (either 4 or M)...i'm not sure of his specs exactly.
muchos gracias!

page in page website fun
Date: 02/09/06
Keywords: php, css, html, web, linux
I'm setting up my website and what I'd like to do is have a page (news) that contains livejournal entries made by a blogger I like. The ideal is that going to this page will display his ljin the format of my own website (which is done in CSS). This is CS and html largely (php enabled). If anyone would like to check the source it's at www.anivair.com.
Note: This is a brand new site. I haven't had any time to rewtire it or to do much but set up a generic prepackaged site with a few minor changes.
Any suggestions as to the best way to do this? (note: my host is globeat and they're runing linux based servers if that is important).

Would it be worth it?

Don't think this is so much of a "How Do I"? as aopposed to a "Should I"? question.
I have Tivo
I have VCR/DVD player combo
I have a boatload of shit on video cassette tapes
In a newspaper flyer there was an ad for a DVD recorder for about $100 from Daewoo.
Questions:
1) Does that seem like a good price?
2) How much of an 8 hour VCR casette can I get on one DVD?
3) If I got the recorder, could I get rid of the combo machine?

Help, please?
Date: 02/07/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm looking to get a new computer because my laptop can't handle 3D games or other high-end processing well. I know a fair amount about computers, probably more than a lot of people. Thing is, I have next to no experience with hardware, and specifically buying computers and parts. I'm thinking of buying this (highly customized, of course), but I'm concerned this isn't a reputable site, and I can't seem to find any reviews on it. Have any of you used it before? Are they good? (Read: will they rip me off/will it break after a month?) Or, do you know of a reputable site where I can get a good computer cheap?
I'd really appreciate any help, and thank you in advance.

WebSphere Pros and Cons?
Date: 02/06/06
Keywords: php, technology, database, asp, sql, web
We currently have an application at my job that uses portlet technology (websphere as far as I know) in order to maintain an track an SQL database filled with articles pertaining to Marketing. It’s a lot of bells and whistles for something that can be easily coded and maintained using either PHP or ASP especially when the guy who is the admin of the application can’t even maintain it. Most of the upgrades and changes are done by another person and not the admin for the application; however, the admin is trying to justify the need for additional portlet technology. I have been asked to research the need and use of portals for our division due to budget cuts.
Currently, we are using MS SQL to develop and maintain databases and use ASP.NET in order to create and develop the webpages. We have a large audience, but the only about 5K of users depending on the application. The servers are running Windows 2000 as well. I would LOVE to have some resources that shows the pros and cons of using WebSphere, or if any of the members have any experience with WebSphere.

OGG to mp3

Hey all. Just a short question...
Does anybody know of a good ogg to mp3 converter, preferably freeware? All the ones I've googled are either rubbish, or require payment.
Failing that, is it possible to make an ipod play oggs? I wouldn't of thought this would be possible, but then again, there are a lot of ipod mods out there...
Thankyou greatly

firefox and embedding an external program as an icon on the status bar
Date: 02/06/06
Keywords: browser, html, web
This question might require some coding skills why I posted it here. I listen to alot of music while browsing the web and find myself having to leave the browser constantly to change the volume. i know with foxytunes you can control it within the browser but that is just for the programs volume. For the xp volume you have to leave the browser(I have a terrible sound card so what I have to do) I found this program:http://glorysoft.omsk.ru/volumetray.html and it has made it alot easier for me but I still have to go to the taskbar to click it. Is there anyway I can embed that into firefox as a bookmark or toolbar? that would be perfect seeing i'd only have to click a button to raise the xp volume
any help would be greatly appreciated
*any other way, or programs to embed the xp volume control into firefox would also be appreciated...but just embedding that program would be perfect; either as a toolbar or bookmark but in the status bar preferably

External Video Capture

Anyone have any experience with external video capture devices?
I am only finding the Pinnacle's and the Dazzles so far. The Dazzles have some of the worst reviews I have ever seen for any product.
I am currently looking into the Pinnacle Studio 700 USB, but the reviews are sparse and mixed.
Any information about the quality of this product, or anything similar would be appreciated.
