Exchange copy problem
Date: 02/06/06
Keywords: no keywords
We use an exchange server at my work to do e-mail and whatnot. I was setting up my laptop to use it, and I accidently had it download a bunch of my mail into the local folder, instead of just leaving it on the server. When I tried to copy it back onto the server, I accidently copied it into the "Mailbox - David Bernal" folder instead of into my actual inbox. Now I can't find my e-mail. Did I totally just lose all of that e-mail, or does it still exist somewhere?
Thanks.

ICQ trouble.
Date: 02/05/06
Keywords: browser, virus, antivirus
My ICQ can't connect already for 3 days.
I tried to exit firewall and antivirus - doesn't help. I can't open www.icq.com or any other page from this server (ICQ2GO, icq help...) in my browser. I thought that ICQ server is down, but my friends can connect normally. I reinstalled ICQ twice (full uninstalation)/ Still no effect.

ive been trying to get it to work and it seems like a great idea when its working, but it tends to freeze up my system quite a bit, and i cant end the task when it does.. i have to restart. most of the reviews i can find are in german (i think?) or are positve.. looks like the actual site for the program is down.
im on a HP pavillion dv1000 laptop (1 gig ram, 80gb hd, 128mb gfx) with windows XP home, service pack 2. its probably <1 month old.

Various Hard Drive Questions
Date: 01/31/06
Keywords: no keywords
Ok this post is kinda all over the place so any comments on various snippets is cool.
I'm looking to get a 2nd hard drive for my computer. I have a 250GB in there right now and am looking to add another drive as a backup/additional storage space. I had some questions though about getting the best HD value I can in terms of performance:
1. Whats the difference between SERIAL ATA and ULTRA ATA?
2. Is ATA150 much better than ATA100?
3. If I install Windows XP 64 on the new HD, will the 2 HDs (Current has XP Pro Regular) be able to recognize and share files on each other since they're both NTFS?
4. Do they sell "extension cords" for power cords that power up hardware within the computer? (Those flat plugs with the 4 holes in them that are hooked up to the main power supply)
Ok thats it. Thanks in advance.

As I mentioned, I have googled it and have a few websites bookmarked but I was wondering if someone would be willing to help guide me through the process of setting it up. I kept most of the important infor from the last time I used it.
IF you would be willing to help me, respond here and we can try and set up a time that is good for both of us.
Thanks VERY VERY much.

consumerstreaming audio from your computer
Date: 01/28/06
Keywords: no keywords
I feel like a moron for asking, as I do audio for a living, but I cannot find an consumer based app, Mac or PC to do this.
I'm looking for an app to stream LIVE audio from my computer. This would only be to a few people...without going through a third party server such as live365, etc.
I don't need any frills; in fact I can give the listeners the IP of my computer. Real simple.
Plug in suggestions for major apps, etc., are welcomed. I'd prefer it to be in a generic format so my listeners do not have to download any special players. Keep in mind, this is LIVE, not prerecorded.
And of course, freeware / shareware is always better.
Thanks!

Crash Course In Mac
Date: 01/28/06
Keywords: web, google
Okay, my girlfriend has a G3 Ibook (Running OSX 10.2.8) that we just installed an airport card on. The problem I am having is that every time I go to a website it brings up AOL. I know it finds a network because it is giving me network strength and such.
Does anyone know how to disable AOL on a Mac? I tried both tech supports (Apple and AOL) and got basically nowhere and the couple of Google searches I did turned up about as much. I've also tried the preferences of AOL and got about as far as the rest.
So, ideas?

USB File Transfer Cables

Had anyone had any experience with or know about using USB 2.0 File Transfer cables for transferring files between computers? I used them a LITTLE some years ago, but that was in the day of 1.1 and they didn't work that well. Have things changed at all or will I have to do it the old fashioned LAN way?

more media hysterics over PC security
Date: 01/27/06
Keywords: virus
Figures gathered by Telewest [cable internet company] suggest that protecting yourself against viruses, phishing attacks and other mail-borne attacks can be expensive.
The average cost of fixing or replacing a computer infected by a virus comes out as £261.61 [approx $470] according to its estimates.
[source]
That's right, they said average...
I don't know about you but it has never cost me a single penny to fix a virus infected PC. Admittedly I know what I'm doing, but I am guessing the maximum cost should be about £100, £50 for PC World to scan/clean it and £50 for the copy of Norton/McAffee they force upon you. £260 is in the region of "OMG i've got a virus, I can't use this again, must buy a new one from dell..."
(or have I been missing something every-time I've cleaned a PC?)

Fake email
Date: 01/27/06
Keywords: web, spam
A company I part-own owns a very valuable domain (web.us). I turned on a catch-all email box such that every piece of email addressed to anyone at web.us gets dropped into a box. I was curious what kind of stuff would be addressed there.
Seems that there's a metric assload of people who put someone@web.us as their email address when signing up somewhere that's likely to get them spam.
Somewhere near 5000 spams per day. Impressive. Very impressive.
But the scary part is how much of a geek I must be to find this impressive.
I'll likely turn it off tomorrow. :-)

NVRAM Error
Date: 01/27/06
Keywords: no keywords
So, I did a video card swap for a friend. Fairly simple task...or so I thought. It keeps locking up during the POST when it says Checking NVRAM.....DONE! Now if I have a keyboard plugged in I do not get the 'Done!' part of the message, otherwise I do. I have tried more then one video card, unseating and re-seating the memory on the motherboard(hey, worth a shot!), and resetting the BOIS. Any suggestions?

I have bought a lot of stuff over the internet at stores, giving them my credit card information and have had NO PROBLEMS....
Our local paper is having a sale where you can get a years subscription if you email in all of your information to them. Is this a good idea to send my credit card info through email? I am guessing "no."
I use Outlook Express if that makes any difference.

Blue screen + reboot
Date: 01/25/06
Keywords: software, virus, spyware
My very new computer works fine, except sometimes it'll suddenly go blue screen for a second and then reboot itself for absolutely no reason I can fanthom (it doesn't happen when I do anything special, actually sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything at all!). The blue screen that appears is this one.
My computer runs on Windows XP SP2, an AMD 64 CPU, 1 Go of RAM and 2.01 GHz. It's absolutely not a virus or spyware problem because I have softwares against both that I've run on the computer already, and anyway they were installed on the computer before it was connected to the internet for the first time. I believe it's a hardware or an XP problem.
For info, the pieces in my computer are (being French and being more used to solving comp problems in French, I hope I'm getting the vocabulary right - please correct me if something's said wrong):
- Motherboard ASUS A8NE socket 939 (NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Series)
- Sound card integrated to motherboard Realtek ALC850
- CPU AMD 3200 64 bits socket 939
- 2 RAM bars Kingston 512 pc 3200
- Harddrive MAXTOR 200go SATA 7200
- Video card Leadtek 6600-TD 128 PCI Express (WinFast PX6600 TD)
I've looked everywhere, asked every of my computer savvy friends, and we can't figure it out... Does anybody have any clue what might be wrong, or could they redirect me to a community that might be able to help?
Thank you so much.

EDIT : It's not an overheating problem, and the store ran tests on the computer and assure me it's not a memory problem, either...
