Broadcast Help
Date: 01/13/06
Keywords: rss, web
As a hugely important part of the group we currently run -- which you all may or may not know about -- I'm initiating a live-feed radio broadcast, which will be linked on our site, via RSS, and various other things. Out of all the options, I'd decided ages ago that Shoutcast was the best option... and so this morning, after our cable internet was finally hooked up and I'd gotten a decent broadcast mic, I downloaded the necessary items to get it running.
However, whether it's because my medication's making me brain-dead or because I'm just a doofus, I seem to be clueless about creating a server. Do I need to host it on my website... and if so, how can I do this? [Step-by-step would be nice... heh.] If not, am I missing something on the instructions? Is there a process I can follow?
And if these things are too complex or just a general pain in the ass, is there a better, free -- for now -- broadcasting utility, like Live365, that I can download and run for free, at least for the moment? We'd been trying to get this running by tonight, but argh, gotta love it.
TIA, guys. ;)
[EDIT: Okay. I found the server download, and apparently it's running. *dramatic brow-wipe.* However, I'd still be EXTREMELY grateful for any help and advice -- more setup? How to create a "Listen" link from our site? How to run a broadcast live via mic? You pretty much get the idea. Thanks!]

syndication backup software
Date: 01/11/06
Keywords: software
I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive would like to use to back up pictures and mp3s and office documents, etc.
I really do not want to use the built-it windows backup software as it creates the back up as one large file.
I want to be able to just connect the external USB 2.0 hard drive to a computer and get the data off it without having to use a “restore” function. So the data I see on my IDE internal drive is the same as I see on the external drive.
I would like to be able to just sync the new files that have been added rather then recreating the back up.
and do not tell me to get a mac

Random Freezing
Date: 01/11/06
Keywords: no keywords
I posted a month ago about how my computer kept on freezing. I had done what some people had suggested but I still have the problem. It does it whenever my computer writes frequenty (downloading large files, copying dvd's, installing large progrmas, etc).
I've tried the following:
- Repair install
- Update drivers (vid, mobo, sound)
- Update windows XP SP2
- Checked all connections to/from IDE Bus
- Ran MEMTESTx86 for 17 hours came up with nothing.
- Norton Disk Doctor comes up with nothing
I'm out of ideas. My hard disk is older, so maybe the write heads are wearing out? Bad Power Supply? Any help would be lovely.

Seeking Opinions on large volume data storage
Date: 01/10/06
Keywords: software, database
Problem
I'm considering upgrading my data storage. Right now I store my data on CD-Rs and DVD-Rs. There is an article out today saying that the life of these disks is shorter than most people assume.
Storage expert warns of short life span for burned CDs
The volume of data is fairly large (between 2 and 3 terabytes). The data is of many types. Video, Audio, Pictures, office Documents, Software, databases, source code, hard drive images etc... Just a bunch of miscellaneous data big and small.
Solution 1 - Build a file server
My first thought was to build a separate box with a bunch of hard drives. The assumption being that hard drives are going to be more durable than CDs or DVDs. If I shell out some serious bucks on hard drives, disk controllers and a large power supply I think I could get it all on one box comfortably with room to expand.
Upsides
- Data will be easily accessible.
- Hard drives are more durable than other media (Assumption)
- There are good maintenance applications for hard drives.
- Organization. Easier to keep hard drives organized
- Very Compact
Downsides
- Cost.
- Time required to build box
- Maintenance of another computer
- Software expense
- electricity usage
Solution 2 - Buy External USB Hard Drives and HUB
I could buy USB based hard drives and connect them to my PC through a hub.
Upsides
- Less expensive
- Doesn't require building another box
- No software needed
- easy Maintenance
Downsides
- Cables. This will require a lot of data cables and power cables
- Need something to contain it all like a cabinet
- USB Reliability?(Info Needed)
- Drive Reliability?(Info Needed)
- Data Transfer speed?(Info Needed)
Solution 3 - Tape Storage
I haven't used tapes in years so I don't know what the cost/reliability issues arise with tapes.

Server Issues
Date: 01/09/06
Keywords: web, apache
At my job we seem to not have the most competant IT department, so in my effort to help rather than criticize I'm looking into ways to help them out. One of the problems that they seem to have is that their web server (which I'm assuming has IIS 6, or maybe 5) will get bogged down to the point where it has to be rebooted. They host a mix of .NET and Frontpage pages. I seriously doubt that this is how things are "supposed" to be, because then Apache would have a great ace in the hole. Anyways since I'm not very good at server administration (and apparently neither are these guys) is there anything any of you can think of that would cause such problems? It seems like there's a problem with resources not being freed up or something along those lines. If anyone has any ideas/experiences with this it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Like Video2DV...
Date: 01/09/06

Anyone heard of Video2DV?
Great concept. Converts DivX and other media files out the DV port so you can watch them via a standard transcoder on a TV.
Development has halted on this. Anyone know of any other software like it?
Thanks!

WAN Question...
Date: 01/09/06
Keywords: virus
me and my sister have the same computer and were trying to make a WAN network with my dads laptop, my computer and dads are working fine but my sisters wont. When I tried installing the WAN Network card the computer wouldn't notice it so I tried in all the PCI ports and still nothing so I tried it on mine and it wouldn't work (I already had a different one in) so I took it was no good so I went and got a new one and tried it on hers still nothing tried on mine worked fine, so then I thought maybe she had a virus that was stopping it from being able to notice it so I swiped her whole harddrive re-installed windows XP professional and tried again and still nothing. Any ideas what the problem might be? the WAN cards are 2.4 GHz 802.11g PCI Linksys(same as the router). Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance
Dan.

NASA Audio Files
Date: 01/08/06
Keywords: google
Thanks much for the conversion of those two .rm files, barbobot!
I find that I'm still missing a few samples that I want for my composition, and I've exhausted the very few NASA files that I've been able to find.
Anyone know of a good repository of NASA audio, across the whole spectrum (that is, from Mercury all the way up to current operations)? It's all public domain (your tax dollars at work, and I mean that in a good way). so it should be out there somewhere...
.wav format is best, but any format is better than nothing.
Google is only showing me recent NASA interviews and people offering to sell video compilations.

.rm to .wav?
Date: 01/08/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have two .rm files that I need converted to .wav (44.1k, but the source is mono), and have no clue what to use to do it.
Anyone here have a tool that will make this conversion and could do it for me?
The files:
http://external.ambler.net/ap12_09_PDI.rm
http://external.ambler.net/ap11_14_Go_for_PDI.rm
For those who respect intellectual property rights, these are public domain audio files of Go/No-Go calls from Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 (hence the fact that they're mono) that I'm using in a music composition - but I could only find them in the RealMedia format and my sampler only understands .wav for some perverse reason.
Anyone able to help?

Kazaa Lite not quite working.
Date: 01/08/06
Keywords: no keywords
I recently reinstalled kazaa lite onto my computer, but it won't let me go into the Search or Traffic modes. This has never happened before, and I haven't a clue why this is happening at all.
I tried to uninstall the entire file and attempted the reinstall it, even so far as downloading what appeared to be the latest version. The same problem came up. I suspect that I must have done something very simple to cause this to happen, and that it would take a simple action to fix it.
If you need further info to help me, just ask.

I think I have a virus or trojan or worm
Date: 01/07/06
Keywords: software
I keep getting a popup on my screen that tells me that my Registry is corrupted, then it directs me to various URLs, not to the Windows Update site. I think that this is either an attempt to break into my computer, steal my personal info, or just get me to buy unecessary and suspicious software.
some of the links it wants me to visit are:
- myregfix.com
I just reformatted my HD with Windows XP so there shouldn't be many causes. Also the problem didn't start until after I went online.
What do you think is causing this?

Anyone know a good high gain antenna for SIRIUS satellite receivers.
I want mine in the house ,but not on the roof.
Now a have it rigged to a old TV satellite antenna.
I put the SIRIUS antenna where the LNB goes.

I looked up the satellites location and its over Ohio or more to the west.
Also how to automatically find and track a SIRIUS satellite .
I know the roof antenna is easy, but this is more fun.

Optical Mouse Annoyances
Date: 01/06/06
Keywords: microsoft
My new computer came with a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse 1.0a. Ever since I got it its been having issues with jumping to the corners of the screen. This becomes REALLY annoying playing games like CS and COD:2 because it disorients me so. Anyways I tried different USB ports, different drivers, adn even got a replacement mouse. Has anyone had this problem before? I heard that they make Optical Mouse Pads, but I don't know if these actually DO anything or if they're like "MUSIC CD-R VS DATA CD-R" (I.e. they basically do the same thing but have different labels.) Any advice would be nice.

Illuminated Keyboard.
Date: 01/05/06
Keywords: no keywords
So I was sitting at my computer last night doing some coding, when I noticed that it was hard to see my keys by the light of the monitor.
This got me thinking about illuminated keyboards. So I started looking around online. All I've come up with are really cheap ones with bad reviews and one pretty cool one that was LED and entirely way too expensive for a keyboard.
So, anybody here have an illuminated keyboard of some sort? I'm interested to hear opinions from first-hand users.
