1. The scariest possibility for the future of IT?

Date: 12/13/05     Keywords: software, linux, microsoft, google

Time Warner and software giant Microsoft are understood to have held talks earlier this year on how the two firms could work more closely together.

Analysts believe Microsoft is keen to buy part of AOL and merge it with its own internet business.

    Source

My position - if this happens it will mark the beginning of the end of the internet as we know it. AOL is already known for it's restrictive practises, combining this with Microsofts proprietry "standards" and monopolistic practises the net will be reduced to a microsoft only zone with linux/mac users unable to access a lot of content due to DRM restrictions. Microsoft would also use this position to force companies like google out of its way, making their sites incompatible with the AOL/Microsoft internet portal.

    Hi all,

    I have an ASP question.
I read in a book I can install a server on my computer, using IIS. After numerous tries to interact with that server (I'm shipping data from client page to server page), I keep getting 500 Internal server error.
I have WinXP Pro, and I read somewhere servers can't be installed on XP. Is that true? Help!

Oh yeah to make this worse the only languages I can due this in are Java ASP HTML maybe if im lucky DHTML; if this is super easy to do in PHP i will try to get them to install support for it on the server but i doubt it =(

    Date: 12/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

Just a word to the wise, don't use a dash in your computer name for the network in WinME. You will scratch your head wondering why the ICS enabled machine can get the net, but none of the others can. =) Now why they design a system that allows invalid ID's to be used in the first place... oh wait it's Miscreantsoft. Nevermind.

  12. Which CPU?

    Date: 12/06/05     Keywords: asp

    Greetings all!

    Upgrading My PC.

It's a frankenputer of sorts, and has been slowly upgraded, with adding a SATA drive, DVD drives, new RAM, etc. Now it's time for a new chip, although I come to understand Socket A's are pretty much dead...so, I'm looking at what is left.

    My Mobo is this:
    A7N8X-E Deluxe
    http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=13&l3=56&model=217&modelmenu=1

    RAM:
GeIL Value Dual Channel PC3200 400MHz DDR
    http://geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=36

My mobo appears to handle Socket A for AMD Duron / AMD Athlon / Athlon XP 3200+ Processors, maxing out at 400Mhz FSB.

I currently have a 1.40 gigahertz AMD Athlon w/ 128kb primary memory cache and a 256kb secondary memory cache.

Also, the chipset is Northbridge: NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 and Southbridge: NVIDIA nForce2 MCP-T

Any thoughts on what CPU may work?

    Thanks!

FFS, I turn my back for a few hours, and all hell breaks loose.

For new posters: Read the userinfo. Read it. Actually pass your eyes over every word, and absorb them into your brain. Follow the advice there. Follow it. Actually take the steps described, and do them. If you don't you'll be called a loser and a timewaster, and with good cause. If you're called a loser, the best way to prove them right is to react like a loser. Take your licks, take the solution offered to your problem, and move on.

For existing members: If you feel someone has earned the right to be called a loser or a timewaster, please feel free to do so. However, don't let it develop into a flamewar or a pissing match. It's really okay to let someone else show the world what a dillhole they are, without having to have the last word. I'll be continuing to delete posts that develop into squabbling, so your remarks, however smart and witty, will be sadly lost to the ages.

  17. There might be hope left for Microsoft after all

    Date: 12/02/05     Keywords: no keywords

In the next version of MS Office, commands that are grayed out will have a tooltip explaining why, and how to ungray them. Also, tooltips will have a link to the relevant usage section of the help file.

Most of the other UI changes are going to take a familiar product and make it screamingly unfamiliar (no more menu, for instance: it's all toolbars), but the enhanced tooltips feel like they're going to be really good and useful features.

  18. wireless access point

    Date: 12/01/05     Keywords: no keywords

Does anyone know of a really well supported wireless access point?
I installed a netgear rangemax access point (the one with the cool lights) at a clients conference room. Most people can connect to it fine, but they had a fairly important person come in who couldn't access it due to incompatibilty problems (he had a dell laptop with onboard wireless, plus netgear are known for rubbish wep implementation). I solved the problem temporarily by turning off wep encryption, then he could access it fine.
This is a fairly important client, so I need a really well supported access point that works with as many wireless cards as possible.

  19. cd drive not seeing blank cds

    Date: 12/01/05     Keywords: no keywords

specs: iBook G4, 1.2 GHz, 768 mb RAM, Tiger, CD burner/DVD reader

tried: restarting, zapping PRAM, burning a CD (does work), repairing permissions, deleting Finder's preferences, different brands

ok. my laptop will no longer recognize blank CDs either in Finder or on the desktop. iTunes recognizes them sometimes, and will open. it does see ones that are burned (by either Mac or PC). sometimes it will just sit there, sometimes it ejects the blank disk.

i looked back through the MacOSX community, and one person did post about this, and that's where i got the idea to zap PRAM, repair persmissions, and trash preferences. however, it doesn't give a solution that worked for that poster. and none of those ideas fixed my problem.
