cheap self destuct vb code
Date: 12/26/05
Keywords: no keywords
I posted asking how to make a program not work after so many times or at a certain date. This is the cheap method but figure I post it so you all have an idea.
'self destuct
Dim dateend As Date
dateend = #1/25/2006#
If (Date.Now) >= dateend Then
MsgBox("Program is out of date obtain a new version")
End
End If
This ends the program right on the spot if put into the load function of the dialog.

Vb question

Here is my deal. I wrote a program for work. I need to make sure it self's destructs every 90 times used or something like that. Here is the problem, 1. it can not keep track of how many times used in the registry, 2. it can not write a file to keep track or how many times.
So basicly it needs to either rewrite itself everytime it's used to keep track of itself while it is inuse. Something to that degree.

Any ideas how to disable the Shell Integration for Windows Media Player? (AKA, you right click on a media, and along with the usual suspects, there are option exclusively for WMP, like "Add to Sync" or "Play on Media Player")

Shopping for a new notebook...
Date: 12/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
I'm on the market for a new computer, but to be totally honest, I don't know what to look for. There's a lot of stuff out there right now and I'd really appreciate it if someone would be so kind as to help me narrow things down. :]
I want something:
- super small (I want to carry it from class to class on a large university campus)
- but not SO small that I can't do anything with it, though I do plan on using an external HD at home.
I would be using it for:
- word processing
- playing music
- watching lectures online
- using the internet in general
- storing photos and other small files
I basically want it to be small enough for me to carry around (I'm small too, and I have no muscles!!) but with enough power that I'd be able to multitask and use large-ish programs without having it slow down and freak out on me.
Also.. what are the pros and cons of using a Mac?
Sorry for the long personal post, and thanks for any responses!!

To Win64 or NOT To Win64?
Date: 12/23/05
Keywords: software
Ok... I just got my brand new machine that has the following Hardware setup:
AMD Athlon 64 4400+ X2
1 GB RAM
250GB Serial ATA II HD
PCI Express nVidia GeForce 7800 GT 256mb
Linksys WMP54G (Version 4 I believe... I just got it and its the really small one)
nForce 4 SLI Motherboard
AC '97 7.1ch OnBoard Sound Card
I have a copy of Windows XP 64-bit available for me to install (Thank you MSDN,) but I'm wondering whether or not its worth installing. I know that there's not alot of software out there that truly supports XP 64, but my main concern is the whole issue of drivers and getting all my hardware to work correctly with the new OS. Does anyone here have any experience with dual boot/Win64 machines and how hard it is to get equivalent drivers for the 64-bit windows? I realize that I won't be able to use Win64 for my everyday use, but also I don't want to run it if I can't get most of the functionality of my computer. Any advice would be appreciated.

Logging onto Windows

Keywords: no keywords
Up until recently, this wasn't a problem. Now, whenever I turn on my computer, it won't log into Windows until I click the User Account in which I wish to log in with.
I recall that there was an easy fix to this, but I have forgotten what it was. Could someone kindly remind me?
I use Windows Xp.

Super PSJoy problem
Date: 12/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
I tried posting about this in other communities but no one could help.
This is kind of a weird problem. I've got a Super PSJoy adaptor so I can use my PS2 controller on my PC, but when I have the controller hooked up, GTA: San Andreas won't boot up. If I unhook the controller, GTA will run normally. If I hook up the controller while the game is already running, it doesn't work.
I've never had this problem with any other game. I've tried reinstalling both GTA and the PSJoy. Any ideas?
I'm running an XP Pro system. Athlon XP3000+, 1gig RAM, GeForce FX5500 256Mb.
If anyone can help, or knows where I'd be able to find help, I'd appreciate it. Tech support for a PSJoy is just about non-existent.

I downloaded a file from limewire, and unexpectedly, this message box appeared that bascially gave me the idea im fucked. I have norton AV 2005, and it didnt catch it. All of the sudden, everything starts going wild and then i restart. It comes back up and everything is gone except for the taskbar, all the taskbar icons were gone too. The clock had a ton of ? marks, and was in military time. Ex: 18:56 ????? And whne i would try to execute something from the start menu, it would say that it cannot do that action because of the restrictions. It even locks up when booting into safe mode. I can get it to connect to my wireless network too. The message boxes were saying Cyanide on them. Its a dell inspiron 9300. Any help would be awesome!

a question about fans (cooling)
Date: 12/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
My power supply can control up to 3 fans (adjust speed according to need to control noise) I have for fans 2 front 1 top and 1 back (mother board has its own controller for CPU fan) if I clipped and joined the wired of the 2 front fans to share a connecter would that adversely affect the performance? Would both fans still get enough power to be effective?

cooling question
Date: 12/20/05
Keywords: no keywords
today I installed a 80mm case fan to help with cooling the motherboard, and it does a great job when the case is open. the average motherboard temperature has dropped almost 10 degrees and the cpu dropped 5.
BUT when I close the case, the average cpu temp rises 15 degrees ABOVE what it was without this fan. and when I open the case again it drops back down immediately. is it possible the airflow from the new case fan is interfering with the cpu's fan?

Question time!
Date: 12/20/05
Keywords: linux
I'm sure this has been posted before, but here goes:
I am wanting to install some flavor of Linux on my laptop. I'm doing a full reformat with three OS partitions and a data partition, to install OS x86, Windows XP, and Linux. I've had some experience with Knoppix, Ubuntu, Suse, and Red Hat. I'm more familiar with KDE, and I'm looking for something that will be relatively painless to install, but that I can still learn about and make good use of. I'm going to be installing on a Dell Latitude D600, and I'd love for all the hardware to work natively - especially my 1400x1050 ATI Mobile 9000 adapter and my Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 B/G internal card. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
Thanks in advance.

DVD Rom Problems & Sony CDs
Date: 12/19/05
Keywords: software
I think I may have found the problem with my dvd drive not working like it should (i posted this last week I believe).
It was that damned Sony Copyright protection software that got installed onto my computer. I thought disabling the XCP CD Proxy service would fix the problem, but it did not. I noticed what while I was watching a dvd this morning and having it crash again that the $sys$drmserver process was running via the task manager tool. Every time it ran, the dvd player would start skipping again.
I was very pissed off at this point! If there is a class action lawsuit against Sony, I'm joining it. Not only could I not removed the drmserver files in c:\winnt\system32\$sys$filesystem without getting into save mode, I could not remove the registry entries either.
Just another piece of unwanted, intrusive software that makes me think twice before buying any cds created by Sony Music Group.

DVD Problems
Date: 12/14/05
Keywords: no keywords
Every DVD that I play on my computer DVD-ROM drive seems to only be able to play 5 to 20 minutes before freezing. I have used NVDVD, Ulead DVD 1.0, and PowerDVD to play the DVDs, and each time the dvd hangs.
I checked the event log, and the errors only say that the application has hung.
At this point, I am thinking that I have a bad DVD-ROM drive, but I wanted to run this by you all to get your opinions before buying a new one.
I tried to update the firmware for the dvd player, but even that would not take.
Computer Manager says that I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B drive, which translates into a Hitachi brand (http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/166/166763.htm).
Should I just buy a new dvd-rom drive?

Airport Screening
Date: 12/14/05
Keywords: no keywords
Seeing how I'm going back north for the holidays, I'm deciding to bring my USB hard drive with me. I'd like to bring it on as a Carry-on item, so I know it won't get damaged, but I was wondering if the screening process with screw anything up? I know laptops can go through it and be fine, but I'm still a little weary about it. Alternatively, I guess I could stick it in the middle of my luggage pressed between some sweaters, but that doesn't sound like such a good idea either.
Do I have anything to fear with screening it?

modifing limited user rights
Date: 12/14/05
Keywords: google
Hello,
I have googled to no avail...
Running XP pro on a workgroup.
I have my room mate on a limited user account and I want her to be able to plug in and access her thumb drive, but on a limited user of course no plug and play.
I can not figure out how to modify either her or the limited user rights to allow plug and play.
If this can be done through a domain/AD I do have enough spare parts to put together a box, run XP or 2003 (if can find my disk) and dcpromo it and configure my network to a domain.
Again, if you could point me in the right direction in that set up it would be appreciated. I have played around with AD a bit in 2k, and that was years ago.

File Share Issues
Date: 12/13/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi everyone :)
Here's one for my network admins and the peanut gallery!......this is a file share issue that I have been milling over for the past month or two that's totally driven me insane.
XP Pro SP2 machines cannot see the shares/files/folders on the Win 2003 SE server. However, all of my 2000 SP4 (roll up done) machines CAN see all the shares/files/folders perfectly fine! No one I've talked to has ever heard of this before! Some days some XP machines can see the shares, other days they can't. Sometimes they can see the folder, but no documents inside nor subfolders! All while the 2000 machines sit pretty since they can see all. I've tried everything [almost, heh] and hunted for a hotfix to no avail.
Suggestions greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. :)

Do this sound right to you?
Date: 12/13/05

Ok I have a Gateway Notebook. 3 months old. A few weeks ago it got unplugged unexpectedly and the battery died. Since then it wouldnt load into Windows it kept looping itself back to the "choose a mode screen" or whatever. The dumbass at Gateway had me format the hard drive and u se my recovery cd. the cd boots up but keeps looping either back to screen where you first hit "R" to run the cd or to a blue screen that prompts an "error cant continue...system has been shut down...fatal error..." blah blah. Gateway says its probably my hard drive and that theyll send me a new on. Does that sound right to you guys? And if it does, is it easy for me to take out the old hard drive and replace it? thanks for your help!
