Needing a second opinion.
Date: 11/29/05
Keywords: google
I've searched in Google, but I just want a second opinion before making a final decision and spending money on something that may not be needed.
My computer was old, so I decided it was time to upgrade the motherboard and CPU. I bought an Asus P5S800-VM motherboard, an Intel Celeron D 336 2.80GHz Socket 775 CPU, and also a 350W PSU. I have a Maxtor 10GB HDD, Quantum Fireball 20GB HDD, Lite-ON CD-RW and floppy drive came from my previous computer, and had no problems with them.
One thing I haven't mentioned yet, is the RAM. I'll get to that in a second.
Whilst installing Windows XP Professional, I had a BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (0x000000FE) error come up, forcing me to reboot. It's only come up once, and during that time. If I'm correct, it has something to do with the CPU and HyperThreading. Also whilst installing, I got a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (0x00000050) error, which I again had to reboot.
Eventually it was installed, and I was in Windows. Not long after did my computer start spontaneously rebooting. At times there would be no notice whatsoever, it would just reboot. Sometimes I would get an error, PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (0x0000004E). I lost count as to how many times my computer rebooted and I got that error. Also worth mentioning, the second I get into Windows, I get an error box saying that an error has occured, do you want to send the report. Always comes up each time I get into Windows. I've also gotten IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0x0000000A) once or twice too.
Now about the RAM. The RAM is PC2100 DDR, but it's not new. I've had it for quite a while now, waiting for the day I bought myself a motherboard that supported DDR. I was given the RAM a while back, but I didn't know if it was working or not. They are 2 sticks of 256MB, equalling 512MB. First attempt to boot up the computer was unsuccessful; POST beeps telling me that something was wrong with my RAM. One of the sticks of RAM appeared to have been burnt previously, but not by me. Something I overlooked. Now I just have the 1 stick of 256MB RAM in, and the computer is working, but not how it should.
Google pretty much says that my problems are related to the RAM being corrupt and defective. The motherboard, CPU and PSU are new, the HDD, optical drive and floppy drive are not but I know they have no problems as I've used them before with no problems. The only thing I can put it down to is the RAM, as it's the only odd thing out.
Does anyone think there could be any other reason as to why my computer keeps randomly rebooting, displaying sendable errors non-stop and showing me the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error?

Weather Web Services

Keywords: asp, web
I'm working on a calendaring web application for photo shoots. One thing I'd like to add is the ability for a photographer to put in the zip code where his/her shoot is going to be, and get the weather forecast (as available) for that day and zip code.
Anyone know of any SOAP web services (preferably digested for ASP.NET) for weather? I heard that MSNBC had one, but I can't seem to find it.

Any PHP Gurus wanna answer a question for me?
Date: 11/26/05
Keywords: php, programming, mysql, browser, html, database, asp, sql
I've done plenty of ASP.NET programming but this is my first foray into the wonderful land of PHP and I've got a question about how often you hit the database in a normal page load... basically I have tags like:
within the front end page and listing.php goes something like
$database = mysql_connect("localhost", "your_database_user_id", "your_database_password");
mysql_select_db("your_database_name", $database);
switch($type){
case 'thumbnail':
header("Content-type: image/jpeg"); // act as a jpg file to browser
$query = "SELECT thumbnail
FROM your_table
WHERE id = $id";
$result = mysql_query($query, $database);
$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
$jpg = $row["thumbnail"];
echo $jpg;
break;
case 'address':
header("Content-type: text/html"); // act as an html file to browser
$query = "SELECT address
FROM your_table
WHERE id = $id";
$result = mysql_query($query, $database);
$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
$address = $row["address"];
echo $address;
break;
}
Now if I understand this correctly, anytime the parser hits a tag (or w/e) it will connect to and select from the database. So on a page with 5 tags that pull from listings.php, the scripts will connect to, select from and disconnect from the database 5 times right? Is this is proper way to do things? It kinda makes me uncomfortable to make so many database hits but this seems to be the average way php developers do it.

Paying for pixels... Hmmm... I wish I'd thought of it first.
Date: 11/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
This is a really strange idea for internet advertising. http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/
The idea is to sell individual pixels for $1 for ad space. This buy will get you 5 years of advertising on this page. The page has no other purpose than to sell ads.
The only advantage I can see for something like this would be to group similar typed pages into areas. That way you wouldn't have to remember or bookmark the pages.

Retro pc components
Date: 11/21/05
Keywords: web
Hello all.
I was routing round in the loft the other day, and I found a box literally full of old 6502 processors and old 8k ram chips. I personally don't have much use for them anymore, but I know there are loads of people on the internet who restore old computers, like the oric etc, to whome a box of old processors is a godsend.
My question is, how would I go about selling them? Do I just post in every forum I can find, or is there a website that would be ideal for this? Also, I have no idea what the asking price would be. It probably isn't much.
Thankyou greatly
sam

Wacom tablet with Illustrator CS2

My Illustrator CS2 doesn't seem to be aware that my Wacom Graphire3 is a tablet. It will work just as my mouse works, but the pressure options are not available when I try to select them on the brush tool.
This is on a Mac Powerbook with OS 10.4. I installed the drivers, restarted the computer with the tablet plugged in, and everything seems to be running properly. Any advice? Thanks!

New printer...
Date: 11/21/05
Keywords: jsp
Anyone have specific printer recommendations? I had an Epson C64 that I was very happy with, but it recently malfunctioned on me and it's just not worth getting it serviced. I paid $60 for it about a year and half ago. Not exactly the greatest lifespan for a printer, but oh well. I've never heard of Epson's doing this before, so I'm assuming mine was a fluke. As far as printing goes, I've been told that Epson is for quality and HP is for speed. I want quality.
I'm leaning towards this one: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=58654751
It's about as much as I'd like to spend. If I need really good prints of something, I'm gonna get those done professionally. Although my C64 has put out some nice prints. Stuff I'd be willing to use even for my graphic design portfolio.
Any opinions? Thanks!

A very specific gift
Date: 11/20/05
Keywords: shopping, ebay
I'm getting around to making my shopping list & I'm stuck on one. My Aunt is a computer teacher/manager of an elementary school & I hear she does a little bit for the junior high as well, (small school). I'd like to get her something that she can hang around her computer screen, etc. Examples are things such as the animals that are made of fabric that hug the screen, little trinkets made for sitting ontop of a computer monitor, or even merchandise, such as a bag with little computers sewn onto it. If push comes to shove I'll get crafty & make something for her, it's just where to find this inspiration that's the problem. She's around Macs all day, and loves little "cutesy" things with computers since it's that elementary teacher chic look ;) Anyone have any links to merchandise? Or even links to how-tos to make her something?
I found little mouse pencil sharpeners that make great stuffing with a gift on Ebay, & will keep searching! Thanks for any help!:)

Printer problem...
Date: 11/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have an Epson C64. Maybe a year old at the most. It has 4 separate ink cartridges for CMYK. I just put in new cyan and yellow cartridges after my printer had been telling me to for a while. I had been getting out both pretty fine, but I thought blue was waning a little, so I put in the new ones.
Now, I get hardly anything. I need to print a document containing black and green. Black comes out alright (with the occasional missing band) but I get NO cyan and just very thin, faint horizontal stripes of yellow. I've done print head alignment and print head cleaning several times now with no results. Any advice??
Any advice is MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thanks in advance!
