1. Help deleting broken file?

    Date: 03/04/08     Keywords: no keywords

I have this file on my desktop, it is a broken file. It is labeled as "CAM705MB". I have NO IDEA what it is. When I try to delete it, I get something that pops up and says "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk". Is there a program that I can use to delete it off my desktop?

  2. Could use some help, IBM thinkpad R50

    Date: 03/03/08     Keywords: security, google

Hi guys, I'm in need of help.

First a little about me.  I'm one of those that grew up around 2 older brothers that were a/v geeks, one of whom is a computer geek for hire (he lives 50 miles away and we're both busy with our various jobs, so I can't run over to his place any time I'm in need of this kind of help).  Thanks to both of them their geekness rubbed off on me.  Though I've had very little formal computer training, as far as classes goes, I know quite a bit about them and can almost always get myself out of some sort of jam when it comes to my own computer (even can do this at work though most places don't like it when a non IT person does such things), if it's something I don't know how to do, I can google it with the best of them.  At my last job I wore many hats, including IT.  Granted I'm more of an advanced usser, but still far from being at the same level as those that majored in computer engineering and other such computer degrees.

which brings me to my problems.

I have an IBM thinkpad R50 and while I love this laptop and plan on keeping it for some time mostly due to lack of funds, I am in need of help.  One day, ages ago, I unintentionally activated the secure disc featuer.  I say unintentionally because I was curious about it, wanted to see what it was about, but didn't want or need it.  So now I'm stuck.  I have tried to disable it, at least the password prompt but no joy.  I've found that if I enter the password wrong, then my laptop boots up really screwy, or should I say takes forever and a day to load my personal settings.  That happened yesterday.  Course after nearly throwing this through the wall today I ran an update (don't ask how I managed to get it to load up or how long it took, you'll get the headaches I had dealing with it just hearing what I went through) and found one of the things making out the CPU got a patch for that same reason.  *sigh*

So here I am, after much hair pulling and agrivation (not to mention, stress), my laptop is back up and running in the barest of sense.  I have my own set of settings that I prefer as far as how this thing runs but my laptop is now refusing to allow me to do that.  For instance, it won't let me activate virtual scrolling on the touchpad, I can't disable tapping, and various little things like that.

I also want to fully disable the security chip, don't want a password prompt, don't even want my laptop to check the status of the chip at bootup for that matter.  As it is I need to log in and the password that I set and have always used to log on, is coming up as wrong.  I'm at the point where I hesitate to shut this down when I go to bed tonight because I don't have the time, energy or want to deal with the stress I went through since yesterday.

So if you managed to get through this post and figure out what I'm asking, GREAT!  now how do I fix it, without having to wipe the HD clean.  I'd rather not because I used my laptop at my old job (which is when/where I got it) and got a lot of sotfware there, none of which I have discs for and wouldn't be able to reinstall.  I also don't have the money for any of it, so I'd REALLY rather not have to go that route.

    THANKS!!!!!!!!!

  4. Mouse problems

Date: 02/27/08     Keywords: software, linux, microsoft

I normally wouldn't post something like this, but after a year of head scratching, my works IT desktop support department failing to find a solution and hours googling, I admit defeat.

When using a work computer, I am required to remote desktop into a server (windows server 2003) to log into the helpdesk software. Occasionally when using this, and switching back to the local PC (XP SP2), my mouse will lose the ability to click and drag objects in outlook and in windows itself (desktop items etc, not windows) The click and drag does work on desktop items on the remote computer. I am still able to click buttons and right click items.

    I have tried:
reinstalling mouse drivers and a new mouse
Recently I got a new work computer (uipdated from SP1 to SP2). I didn't copy any settings over from the old one. New hardware, new profile. It kept happening.
I then deleted my profile from the remote PC. It keeps happening. I have brought in my own mouse from home and installed seperate drivers for it (logitech), it still happens, I have updated remote desktop to the latest version from microsoft.com. The only solution is to power off the PC, logging out and back in doesn't fix it. I have recently found however, that logging out of remote desktop, then waiting 5 clears it up, making it more annoying than critical. But this doesn't make me happy, as it's an itch that I can't leave alone till I fix it (that'd be the geek in me!). Every variable has been changed. It still happens. But not to anyone else.

This doesn't appear anywhere in microsofts help files. It doesn't happen to the other 3 people who I share this PC with. I am starting to think it knows I defected from windows to linux and am now a mac user. Anyone? Anything?

  5. Translating a website

    Date: 02/24/08     Keywords: html, web

    Hello!

I've recently had someone request that I send them a sample site of their English website, translated into Spanish. Translation is much more my nitch than web design. So, I took the source HTML from the site, plugged it into PageBreeze, and got to work translating. Soon enough, I found that PageBreeze was taking all of my accented characters (á, é, ñ) which I typed with alt codes, and making them boxes (in Trebuchet font). There were even times in between saving, previewing and editing that the editor would completely omit such characters. Strangely enough, whenever I typed the characters into the rich-text editor (as well as the html editor), they would show up correctly without a problem; they would only be boxes in the IE preview. Soon enough, PageBreeze stopped working at all, and I found Coffee Cup, or something like that (If you haven't yet caught on, my budget is less than fortunate), which also did basically the same thing.

However, when I found a web-based html editor (I've forgotten the URL) which automatically updated my preview as I was typing, the accented characters were correct.

SO... If anyone can help me, this is what I want to do: Take the html document I have (saved in Word) for the website translated into Spanish, and turn it into an html... Internet Explorer... viewing... file... (What would one call that?) Which I can owner to the owner of the website, so that when he opens it, it will give him an exact preview of the site in Spanish.

Thank you for weeding through my lack of technical knowledge :x and I GREATLY appreciate any help you can offer!

  6. BAsfIpM.exe hangs up my shutdown

Date: 02/24/08     Keywords: asp, virus, spyware

Recently, a file called BAsfIpM.exe has been starting up on my Dell Latitude D600 (running XP). When I try to shut down, this file hangs up the shutdown (or hibernation). I know it's that one, because if I close it via the task manager, shut down goes smoothly. A search shows that it's a 72KB file located in two places: c:\I386, and c:\windows\system32. I've searched for information about this file and I find totally contradictory information, from "Wipe it" to "It's critical to have it!" In response to the theory that it's spyware or a virus, I've run AVG and Kaspersky Virus checkers and a couple of spyware checkers, but nothing comes up. Any ideas? How can I get my laptop back to just shutting down properly? Thanks!

    Hey,
I'm looking for advice on what I should look out for/be aware of. I live in Tennessee and was just offered a job doing PHP programming from home by a company based out of Calgary, Alberta (Canada). I'm just waiting on the employment contract. Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to or ask about. I've never worked full time from home nor have I worked for any company out of Canada and I was wondering what I should watch out for and keep in mind. Thanks!

For a few weeks now, every one in a while my computer will go to a blue screen with some white writing on it and it says something about "Bad_Pool_Caller". At the very bottom of this blue screen, it does some sort of count up to a numver of infected files. I am not sure though, as I try to start my computer ASAP after seeing the BSOD. Does anyone have any idea what that is and how to stop this from happening? If it makes a difference, I have XP Home. It seems to have started at about the same time I got a wireless router. If there are any details that you you need that I left out (probably so), just let me know.

I'm working on something for school and trying to find accurate info... can anyone tell me what the first actual Windows OS was? According to quite a few sources, 1.0 was technically an add-on for MS-DOS and not a complete OS. After that, I'm not finding anything that specifically says that "XXXX" was the first actual OS for Windows. Anyone out there have any input?

I have an Epson Stylus C86 printer. I just went to print something and I noticed that I am missing something that I used to have. It is called the "Status Monitor 3(M)" It tells how much ink you have left in all your cartridges. I don't know what I did, but that no longer works. Can anyone help me? I would be very appreciative. I DID try to google it, but not sure if I found what I was looking for. Thanks so much, in advance.

  20. Intel pulling away from AMD

    Date: 02/06/08     Keywords: no keywords

AMD makes a 45 nm comeback against Intel's Penryn
    http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/02/05/analysed-amd-nm-comeback-vs

Best case, of course, is Bloomfield Nehalem out - probably at not much more than 3.2 GHz, but a fast 4-core, 8-thread monster with native integrated memory controllers, QuickPath and 3-channel DDR3-1600 memory subsystem. Expect it to be at least as fast as a 4 GHz Yorkfield, and twice that in memory benchmarks.

Talk about Yorkfield, that is the "worst case". Assume that Intel doesn't move at all - they could still use the existing steppings to ship 3.6 GHz / FSB1600 (multiplier 9x) Yorkfields without any problems.

Let's give AMD a headstart then. How would a 3.2 GHz DDR2-1066 45 nm, 6 MB cache Phenom, AMD's best case this September, compare with Intel's 3.6 GHz FSB-1600 Yorkfield, their worst case that same month?

Based on the existing benchmarks, a 2.6 GHz DDR2-800 Phenom 9900 is, on average, 15%-20% behind 2.66 GHz FSB1333 Yorkfield Q9450. Assume that, on aver age, the above mentioned 3.2 GHz 45 nm AMD part would perform some 35% better than the Phenom 9900 - a generous allowance, shurely. Also, give the 3.6 GHz Intel, say, 30% extra over the Q9450.

The result, after a bit of rounding: Intel would still be some 10% - 15% faster, except for the memory benches. And that ignores completely at least two major steppings they'd do in such period of time on the Penryn dies - if the 65 nm history is any guide, we should expect at least a 10% direct frequency jump at the same voltage or even TDP in that process, with corresponding high-MHz yield increases.

Even if Intel grinds to a complete STOP and basically offer the same products it offers now, it would still be ahead of AMD's new stuff (if it comes out) in September. The best case scenerio for AMD almost a whole year from now still loses out to Intel's worst case scenerio then.

That's all she wrote, folks. Things are getting boring between Intel and AMD. I'm gonna go take a nap now- Wake me up when Nehalem comes out.
