Web Hosting
Date: 02/19/09
(Web Development) Keywords: web, hosting
I saw on the community profile that Dream Host is recommended, but I've been doing some internet review searches and they seem to have a good number of really bad reviews.
Does anyone have any other solid recommendations for web hosting? Currently I'm just wanting to create my own personal website for showing my work, etc - for potential employers to look at.
ETA: I also currently live in Ireland so I don't know if location will matter for recommendations. Like if the hosting is in the US, will my speeds be affected? I might be back in the US in several months, but not sure yet.
ETA: Thanks all for your comments and recommendations. I ended up going with InMotion because they seemed highly rated all 'round and they weren't outrageously expensive.

Help with mail code.
Date: 01/09/09
(PHP Community) Keywords: html, hosting, spam
I'm experiencing massive frustration with the code I have for sending me form data. It usually works. When I test it, it always works. But now and again, it seems to just .. not work. The most recent incarnation, it sent the confirmation email (the third "mail" function), but not the first two. I have no clue what is going wrong, since it always works right when I test it.
I've contacted the hosting company a couple of times, since at first I thought maybe it was a problem with the second address, but this last one didn't get sent to me, either.
Any advice?

WebHosting question
Date: 09/14/12
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, hosting, google
Hi!
My apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this question.
My web-pages were typically hosted by my employers (Universities or research institutes). All of a sudden I find myself needing to find a separate home for my web-page. So I looked into web-hosting services (for the first time :)), and I find myself a little bit confused. What I would like is to have a chance to look at an existing page hosted by ipage, GoDaddy, justhost, or any other of thee commercial services. Do they have adds? Do they insert some money-making pop-ups into your page?
The reason I am asking these questions is, our own IT people sent me an offer from the same company that hosts our institute's web-site, and it's astronomical - 80 Euros/month with 2 GB of space. A simple google search tells me that for 6 euros a month I can have unlimited space (???). Hence the confusion.
Advice would be highly appreciated.

(IT Professionals) Keywords: php, software, hosting, spam
Can anyone recommend a fairly professional forum hosting service? I am looking for one for a client of mine. In the past I have ran a forum (phpbb) for their site and it becomes an administrative nightmare (updating software, making sure antispam software is updated, spammers, hacks, backups...) after a few months. Honestly, I want to be able to do as little as possible and just pay someone to handle the software side. I can get administrators to weed out spam and moderate.
Thanks

Wordpress migration from dev to production
Date: 09/02/13
(Web Development) Keywords: php, database, web, hosting
Hi,
I downloaded the Wordpress source files to my development environment, where I am playing around with new features and adding content.
Now that I have a better comfort level with Wordpress, I'd like to migrate my blog content to my production server through FTP.
I understand I also would have to migrate the database too, since that's where all my content is stored.
Should I go through the installation process on my production server, and then copy the modified databases over to production? Or should I just paste all of my PHP source files from dev into a new folder on my server and assume that things will work (I guess that is kind of a silly question?)
Is there anything I should be aware of when pasting the files in Production and logging into it? My biggest concern is while I am going through the installation again, someone else could be trying to go through the Wordpress files as I am configuring my blog environment for the first time.
I can't change the database names on my server, since it is going through a web hosting company, so perhaps it is better to go through the installation again in production, and then migrate the content from the databases.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

ARGH, any way I can find a anti spam guestbook?
Date: 02/23/12
(Web Development) Keywords: html, hosting, spam
Ok, if you didn't know, HTML Gear is closing. I'd used them for guestbooks on my personal pages for a long time.
However they're closing, so I took them off. The service I switched to said they were anti spam but..
First entry I get is spam. It's proly time to start hosting the guestbook on my own server since I can. Mind, I have access to recapatcha which seems to stop most spammers. Is there any scripts out there that'd allow that?

Ecommerce integration
Date: 12/10/10
(Web Development) Keywords: ecommerce, hosting
I’ve been asked to identify an Ecommerce solution for my office.
Despite what the sales people think (an exaggerating bunch) we’ll likely be low volume, but product prices can range from $5 to $20,000.
Like something scalable.
Thought we might use some of the Free/Cheap Solutions (ZenCart PayQuake) offered with our hosting site, but I’m having reservations.
Quickbooks integration a plus.
Any and All thoughts on topic would be helpful. Thanks!
(A little more information might be helpful-- We only require one storefront, we'll put it on a sub-domain, and we would like reseller and discount/coupon options)

More advanced mod-rewrite
Date: 11/16/07
(Apache) Keywords: php, html, web, hosting
I've recently been switching my site over from a bunch of static HTML pages to PHP using Smarty templating
I've decided to use mod_rewrite to make more attractive and search-engine friendly canonical URLs
I've chosen this format:
http://example.com/some-words/some-more-words/
http://example.com/some-words/
(both are valid, up to 2 such sections as shown)
Notice no ".html"/".php". This is rewritten to
index.php?page=some-words/some-more-words/
The problems:
In the meantime, while I transition to this format, I'm keeping my old static pages up, because there's a lot of inbound links to them that aren't going to get changed (little websites, various forum and blog posts, etc)
I'll eventually get my pages switched over, but in the meantime there's at least one directory I would like to exclude from rewriting. Is there a way I can omit specific URLs from rewriting? I'd like for "example.com/particular-directory/" to be exempt from being rewritten
Another possibly related problem is that I have a few other domains hosted as "add-on" domains to the same hosting package, so their contents are in a subdirectory. So, of course, the URL re-writing directive cascades down and breaks those domains completely. Of course, it only took a few seconds to fix by adding an .htaccess to each subdirectory saying "RewriteEngine Off", but what if I wanted a separate URL-rewriting scheme on those directories? Can I tell it to ignore any other rules that might be applied and start fresh?
My current rewriting rule looks like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^/?([a-zA-Z0-9\-]+/?[a-zA-Z0-9\-]+/?)$ index.php?page=$1 [L]
Is there a flag or other rules that could help me?
(Note: I'm on shared hosting so http.conf etc are not an option)

Seperate instances of Apache under one box
Date: 06/11/07
(Apache) Keywords: security, hosting, apache
Can Apache run under different instances, so that we can direct traffic to each Virtual Host under a different instance. Would doing so offer better security than simply using virtual hosting? One of our sites is internal, the others are public. We want to keep the internal site locked down extremely tight.
In that same light, is it possible to have different SSL certs for different Virtual Hosts running on the same physical box (under one IP)?
Thanks for suggestions/pointers.

Multiple, independent domains
Date: 09/23/05
(Web Hosts) Keywords: web, hosting
I've been maintaining a single personal website for a number of years now, but now the rest of my family wants to get in on the act, and have their own websites, too. We signed up for a shared hosting account that advertised multiple domains, but after we got it set up realized that this was not what we wanted at all. Rather than several independent domains, we had one domain and several others that were aliased to the main one. I reasoned that surely there was a way for the host to set it up on the server the way we wanted it, but apparently not.
So I have two questions: First, is this the behavior I should expect from a shared hosting account, or did we just end up with a bad host? In other words, are there shared hosts out there that will support multiple, independent domains on a single account, or is this not even possible? And second, if not, what kind of account do I need to do what I want to do?
From the little I've been able to figure out, it looks like a reseller account might be my ticket. But I honestly don't know what I'm doing at all. If a reseller account is what I need, do any of you have hosting suggestions?
