1. Can I request some help?

    Date: 02/15/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, templates, css, html, asp, web

    I have seen the glory that is css/div/non-table based design. I'm a big fan of valid XHTML. I just suck at it.

    And while I'm more than willing to broaden/improve my skills, I'm trying to put together a new forum. I'm looking at phpbb themes and I want to cry. The design is just atrocious.

    Is there any chance I could enlist someone's aid in putting together a phpbb style for a new forum I'm doing?

    I'd also really like the templates to be fully xhtml/css compliant, but that can be split into two tasks. One task is developing the artwork, which can simply be putting together a sliced psd file, and the other is making the templates. If you have artistic skills, or xhtml/css skills, I can use your help either way. (I understand this community is more focused on the coding of web-design, but that doesn't mean the members here aren't possibly good resources in other aspects of web-design).

    I found one theme that uses css/div-based/non-table design, and it is for SMF, not PHPBB, and sadly much of the functionality I need I can only really find in PHPBB hacks. But it does go to show that even when working around clunky forum content, it can be done. (If anyone cares, I'm talking about the Endar Theme for SMF)

    I'd like to break up the layout with some white space, move navigation tabs on the left, and utilize non-standard lines to break up the usual boxy layout of phpbb.

    The artist who helps me would obviously still own the work and would decide distribution rights of it as they wish.

    I am also willing to throw a few bones at whomever helps me, but I'm also largely broke.

    Thanks for your time!

  2. display states in IE7.

    Date: 02/16/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

    I need help seeing what's screwing up in a little thrown together navigation:
    http://www.scottopic.com/testnav/News_Releases2.html
    It's all onClick events which are supposed to open and close similar to a file tree, and then close out all of other top level options whenever another top level choice is clicked.
    It uses simple a simple Show/Hide script to toggle the display state of the secondary navigation layers from display: none to display: block and back.
    The elements of the navigation are made up of unordered lists

      and list-items

    • Simple,right?

      Well, I was happily pretending like I knew what I was doing in IE6, and while it's code-ugly, it did the job.
      But now looking at it in IE7, the display of the sub-navigation layers seem to essentially open behind the main navigation. If you click "Dentists:, it essentially works right, but then see the problem as you click "Agents/Brokers", "Purchasers" and so on - above a certain point, it looks like nothing is happening.

      Any hints or ideas what may be going wrong here?
      I'm not necessary asking for anyone to reshape the code, but a poke for my cobwebby brain may help out here, including outright faults in my code/styles and/or esoteric problems in IE7.

      Handy link to the CSS:
      http://www.scottopic.com/testnav/nav1.css

      Note: it also does a similar 'trick' in Firefox, but that's not the primary concern at this stage.

    • How should I align nav bars between pages?

      Date: 02/16/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: blogging, software, css, html, web

      I am not a web developer by trade or experience; I'm most familiar with blogging software for online publishing and layout than I am with hand coding or what I think of as "hard" development. That said, I created this site with Dreamweaver and based its layout and design on a template they provided.

      I can't, however, seem to get the page title and nav bars aligned between the index page and the others (e.g. vs photos or vs details). Could someone please suggest what I need to clean up in there to make them line up properly?

      Further to that point, I see from the HTML that the pages are set up with tables. Isn't that considered sort of passé, now? Aren't the hip developers using DIVs and CSS to set up tabular or columnar or whatever layouts they conceive for their pages? And if so, how do I do that myself?

      Also (no flames please), can you set these up with a WYSIWYG interface like Dreamweaver? Or is the code just so damned neat and tidy that it's no more hassle to do it by hand? I'm open to that too, if it's really not hard to learn. You see, I have two kids. Which means no spare time. :)

      Has anyone used SimplePie to integrate rss feeds?

      Date: 03/01/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: php, html, web

      Hi!

      It happens two times today that my Firefox 2.0.0.2 crashed. The first time in my own forum when I clicked on "Who is online?". And second time just happened a few minutes ago when I was clicking on the category title in a friends forum. Both forums are the same version (phpBB2 Plus 1.53) and it was not the first time it happened there. And both forums are the only ones where Firefox crashes. Maybe I should mention that problem to the developers (of phpBB2) as well, but I doubt they can do anything.

      Any ideas what could cause this?

      If useful, these are the installed extensions:

      Adblock 0.5.3.043
      deviantMessage 0.9.1

    • Forms--All In One

      Date: 03/01/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, html

      Is there any reason NOT to combine all the elements of a (blank) form with its verification scheme and resulting output in the same PHP file?

      I’ve been creating a form that submits to a secondary page to sanitize the input and verify specific fields before generating output html.

      But this seems like a clunky novice approach begging for improvement.  I was thinking I should throw in a switch and combine all the elements into the same PHP file.

      I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have!

    • Embedding video

      Date: 03/01/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: html, java, web

      Hi,

      I'm really new to java and I am looking to embed a video from ifilm in a popup window.

      This is the script I have so far:

      start script

      function openindex()
      {
      OpenWindow=window.open("", "newwin", "height=400, width=500,toolbar=no,scrollbars="+scroll+",menubar=no");
      OpenWindow.document.write("")
      OpenWindow.document.write("")
      Open.Window.document.("bracket embed width="448" height="365" src=weblinkhere quality="high" bgcolor="000000" name="efp" align="middle" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" flashvars="flvbaseclip=2687058" >")
      OpenWindow.document.write("")
      OpenWindow.document.write("")
      OpenWindow.document.close()
      self.name="main"
      }

      end script

      The link is supposed to be: http://www.ifilm.com/efp
      I had to put it like that so everyone could see the code.

      Also, bracket embed is supposed to be < embed (no space of course)

      The problem is in the embed tag.
      If I dont have that there I get a popup box to come up no problem.

      At ifilm, that was the embed html code they supplied.
      When I put it in the body text it worked (not as java, as plain html).
      But I want it to popup in a separate window when you click on some text or a button.

      Can someone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?

    • Can you give me some ideas for this client server application I'm building?

      Date: 03/01/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, html, asp

      hey guys,

      Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post. I am still on the same project, but this time I'm trying to do something else. Namely, to use the FileSystemObject to create a script that is going to make brand new HTML pages (based on a template on a dynamic page.) But before creating the pages it will allow the user to look at the server directory (which sounds kind of like what you could do if this were an FTP app) and let them select the resources to appear at certain locations on the template (and that's kind of like a picture gallery app.) I'm working with ASP (classic right now, but I might have to switch to ASP.NET.) Some of the functionality is easy to nail down, but others, like getting the directory structure to be viewable on the browser window, boggles my mind. Do you have any recs or know of any useful apps for any of the aspects of this project?

      Thanks.

    • Code indentation in Dreamweaver

      Date: 03/02/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, html

      I saw some folks complaining in a previous post about code indentation in Dreamweaver. On top of that, I know there's an ongoing war between Tabs and Spaces when it codes to indenting code.

      If you use Dreamweaver, indentation is really a non-issue. Even the Tab contingency and the Space contingency can get along.

      First go to Edit--Preferences--Code Format and select your favorite indent. (Personally, I use 1 tab and set the tab size to 3.) You can set other options for code formatting here as well.

      Next—with an HTML/CFM/PHP/whatever file open—go to Commands--Apply Source Formatting. Dreamweaver will automatically indent your code, making it consistent with your preferences.

      The keyboard shortcut for that is Alt-c-a, so whenever I open a file with inconsistent indentation, or that uses spaces when I prefer tabs, I just hit Alt-c-a, and suddenly the world on my screen is a more beautiful place.

      Okay, I'm still getting the grasp of php... I went off for a while to actually learn html... Okay, well. I'm having the most troubles with mysql. It's quite confusing, along with cookies. Anyways, this isn't going to be about cookies. I want to just know how I can somehow get a nice list of... everything. Somehow. I really want know what's IN my mysql database and what names, etc. I'm using a pre-made script, so I'm rummaging around in circles with no straight answers on what what is.

      Anyways, I'm going to go to sleep, tomorrow I'll check back for answers for this... I'd like to know if I need to make a page or something like... www.website.com/mysqltestpage.php and go there.

      Eh. Anyways, I need a lot of advise, if someone has msn/yahoo/aim/irc/skype/etc. uhhh tell me if you'd let me add you and ask questions from time to time.
