Need some fast help
Date: 07/13/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html
Hey everyone I need some quick help on this so if anyone can offer assistant I would really appreciate it.
I am making an image map so different areas of an image will open different links in a lower frame. I used to do this a lot. The HTML page with the image map works just fine.. but once I put that HTML in frames the clickable area is not in the right spot and is a bit larger! Why would a working html file have different map coords once put into a frame?
This is my image map code that works fine unless it is in a frame.
[map name="shapes"]
[area shape="rect" coords="130,90,240,110" hrEF="chris.html"]
[/map]
My frameset code is this:
[frameset framespacing="0" border="0" frameborder="0" rows="50%,50%"]
[frame src="menu_top.html" name="top"]
[frame src="menu_bottom.html" name="bottom"]
[/frameset]
Any idea what is causing this? Maybe something in the image map code or frameset code that could be messing up the map when loaded in frames? Thanks for any help.

Transparent windows
Date: 07/14/07
(Javascript Community) Keywords: css, html, java
Hi, I have been looking around the net for the secret to those black, transparent windows Netflix and others put up when there is a nested window. Its got to be something besides the css transparency filter because it works in Firefox.
Any tips or urls are appreciated.
BTW found this related to PNGs and IE
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/pnghowto.htm
Here is a simple Javascript run photo gallery I just made (use it if you like)

(that transparent black window would work great with this)

Lightbox Solution
Date: 07/15/07
(Javascript Community) Keywords: php, html, sql, java, web
I'm working on a new website, and for many of the functions, I really want to replace all the damned annoying popups with much more friendly code. Why even have popups? Well, for instance, in the message forum, you often get a popup when you get a new IM. In the Gallery, if you click on a single image, it is annoying to do a new pageload for that, and then go back and reload the old pack just to select another image.
For many functions, Lightbox is a great solution, but it isn't everything I'm looking for. There are plenty of Lightbox variants. My favorite two are the following:
http://www.justinbarkhuff.com/lab/lightbox_slideshow/ - This is based of Lightbox 2, but adds native slideshow support, more keyboard controls, etc.
http://www.ryanjlowe.com/?p=9# - In many ways, head and shoulders above all Lightbox clones. The window can be dragged around, can include html, Flash, forms, whatever. You can have an event to pass information back and forth between the popup and original window, etc.
I love the transition effect of Lightbox 2, and the opacity of the windows in Litbox. I love the prev/next/slideshow features of Lightbox 2, and the fact that you can drag the Litbox windows around. I like the keyboard controls of Lightbox 2, and the fact that you can include all kinds of content in the Litbox window.
I know enough PHP and SQL to get myself in trouble, and enable myself to break/build a site to my liking. However, my javascript knowledge consists of copying and pasting. I have no clue what I'm doing. Is there some soul who like me, sees the benefit of a powerful Lightbox clone that combines many of the features from these two?
I'd be extremely grateful if someone can help me out.

Fiction Website Help Required
Date: 07/18/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, web
Hey
I'm helping a friend set up a website for her fanfiction. The problem is she knows no html at all so what I was thinking of doing was installing a programme for her that would allow her to have sections for her fanfiction and allow her to update easily. But at the same time allow her to put in graphics as header images etc... I have no idea where to start looking for that though! So the question is, does anyone know of anything I can use for this? Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Flash Headache
Date: 07/22/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, web
I've lurked for a long time, and I was wondering if it's okay to ask some questions pertaining to building a web page in flash. I've never done anything with flash before, and I've been making my portfolio page in a class for it. I've been working my way through it and have come to a problem.
My problem is located on the page for "2d Art"
http://www.ufotofu.net/test.html
Basically-- my goal is to have thumbnails which viewers can use to click on and display a sample of art. I have a few buttons out to test, and I made corresponding .jpg images that will load via the "Load Graphic behavior"
I have it set to load the image on release-- and it works, but then I'm left with a problem. Once it loads, it wont go away. If someone goes to load something, it wont go back to the other one when it's clicked.
Right now, only the first two thumbnails are set up. I didn't bother to do any more when I found this issue. They load once and I suppose it's something to do with layers.
But ultimately, I would like to be able to have someone click an image, have the page show the art, and then when a new one is clicked-- get rid of the previous one and load the new image.
Many thank yous in advance for your help!

transparency woes
Date: 07/22/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, web
So, in light of this post: http://community.livejournal.com/webdesign/1286735.html I have a related question.
For the life of me, I can't get transparent gifs to work properly in html anymore. At all. I make an image in photoshop, make sure its transparent, save as a gif. Open the gif in photoshop and its transparent. When I place it into an HTML doc it gets a white background.
So eventually i said 'forget it" and switched to .png, which works. But now I realize that it doesn't work in IE6 and below...
What oh what is a girl to do?! How can I either a) make .gifs appear transparent again, or b) make my .pngs transparent in IE6 and below? Which is the easiest / best solution?
Thanks!

.htaccess
Date: 07/25/07
(Web Development) Keywords: php, browser, html, web, hosting
So I recently changed the extensions of all of my web pages from HTML to PHP. This was good because I could finally do proper headers without the validator bugging out at me. Unfortunately, it also means I have twice the number of files in my directory - those with .html extensions and those with .php. The HTML files are needed to say "Oh yeah hey just change the extension of the page you're looking at to .php and you're good to go". The easy way to fix this, I thought, was to delete all of the HTML pages and set up a custom 404 page that could say the same thing with just one file, but as of yet it hasn't quite worked. I made a .htaccess file that says the following:
ErrorDocument 404 404.html
With 404.html being the 404 page, obviously. I uploaded them both into my directory (I don't have my own domain; someone's hosting me but I kinda haven't talked to my hostess in a while) and the files are... well, there, but if I go to a made up address it just gives me the default 404 page. Anyone know what's wrong? I read somewhere that the permissions have to be set to 644, and I think they are - when I go to the chmod command after right clicking on a file I get rw-r--r-- (er sorry if my syntax is wrong, but yeah it's 644). However, if I click OK, WS_FTP gives me this error: 500 'SITE chmod 644 .htaccess': command not understood ! Chmod failed. It may not be supported on remote host.
I'm not really sure if that's relevant to anything, since it seems like it's 644 anyway, but... yeah. Also I'm not entirely sure if this is an error but if I type in the URL of the .htaccess file into the browser (http://www.example.com/directory/.htaccess) it says it can't find the file, even though I know it's there.
Sorry for the long post, but yeah hopefully someone can help me...?

Techniques.
Date: 07/28/07
(Web Development) Keywords: html
There's a DHTML technique that is becoming more common place, that I would like to use, but have no idea what it's called or the way to execute it. I'll try to describe it, and send example links.
Let's say you are on a persons photo gallery site. They have a thumbnail. You click on the thumbnail and a 50% opaque layer comes out from now where and covers your entire page in a gray myst. Then in that div that contains the larger screen resolution image and a button to disable this newly created layer.
Do you know what I am talking about? What is this technique called? Tutorials on how to do it?

Upload to email attachment
Date: 07/30/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, html
This has me scratching my head... I have no idea why the sending of the file is failing.
I found a script here
http://www.trap17.com/index.php/form-php-mail-attachment_t28987.html
It seems to work except the file doesnt arrive in the email
Here are the relevent headers from the email
Content-Type: ;
name=""
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=""
Attachment converted: Kobol:Untitled (TEXT/ttxt) (0048378B)
Email message here
there is an attachment "untitled" and its size is zero.
If you go here
http://tfcdesign.fatcow.com/demos/form_upload_to_attachment/index.php
you can send me a graphic and see the headers as they are before the email is sent.
Any helpful tips are appreciated!
UPDATE: it seems to be working with a jpeg... but not a gif... OK it seems it was the particular gif file I was using. SHEESH.
OK - one last issue - if the file size is over 1MB or so, the email fails to send. Any ideas?

Help with headers?
Date: 08/05/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: html
Hey, i'm old to LJ but new to this community! ^_^ Anyway, i was wondering, can anyone teach me how to make a layout like this?
http://community.livejournal.com/kurage/
What i want is a header at the top, like that community's layout. I've tried all the tutorials and i can't find a single thing that explains this. The way i make layouts is use photoshop and make/copy and edit an image, then paste it up into the override codes. I'm also using the Generator style, so if i were to want to have that layout as that community, will i need to change it? Or is that kind of layout only available to paid accounts?
Sorry for being such a dummy on HTML...^^;; And thanks in advance! ^_^

Firefox alignment issue?
Date: 08/06/07
(Web Development) Keywords: html, web
Ok, hopefully a very, very simple issue I am just totally missing the solution to.
Website Here
Looks perfect in IE, BG doesn't align in Firefox. I'm hand coding this very slowly in notepad with lots of help, but my friends don't know why this is acting up.
Suggestions? And please, make them idiot-simple. I'm doing this by reading an old HTML book and occasionally scanning the net for tutorials, so 'just do x' may not be nearly so intuitive for me.

And the REAL oddity is that when I activate the FireFox Extension Web Developer to edit the CSS - it suddenly works! Until I close the Web Developer sidebar.

Have a clicked link open in a new window--- Flash?

So here's another question I've come across in my quest to figure out building a page in Flash-- how do I have a link open in a new browser window? I'd love to know how to do it for both flash, and html because I have a basic link for those needing to update their flash plugin, in html.
And for anyone interested in seeing how my page is progressing, you can see it at: http://www.ufotofu.net/ufo_new.html

PDF woes
Date: 08/08/07
(Web Development) Keywords: php, html, linux
Ok there are way to many ways to do this and I am getting behind schedule so here we go:
-There is a lovely form (as it stands now in HTML); I want people to enter in data and then when they press submit a PDF is generated on the box and saved for later review by the client.
The end form is going to run on a Linux box with PHP that has limited access (think little to no console access).
Fpdf looked like the best choice but I do not want to build the PDF file if need be ( I can make it now via Acrobat Pro). That and I have found 0 examples (I live by them) that incorporates (and works!) HTML form work, $POST and FPDF.
In Acrobat Pro I can make a form, put a submit button and then give it an action; then it can magically export the data as FDF, HTML, XFDF or PDF. Horrible shame that there is no documentation to show how to catch it on the server side (email links assume the user has a email client on their machine).
At this point I just want this over and done; any hints or help?
