Web host searching
Date: 08/29/06
(Web Development) Keywords: php, mysql, software, database, sql, linux, hosting
I see that this forum recommends Dreamhost. How long have you been using it? Are they located in the U.S.? I don't know if the latter is necessary, but I guess if a host goes down and loses everyone's files, there could be a group law suit with some recovery. I don't know what to worry about the most, but I did go with a service once that suddenly disappeared. Luckily I had a techie who found the files still available somewhere and transferred them to another server for me.
I'm not a "techie". I'm also not a "designer" so if you check out my sites, please be kind on the critique of their appearance (search engine optimization and user-friendly access is my biggest concern).
I'm presently using a really cheap hosting service for one of my sites, 3ix. My son has used it for 2 yrs. with no problem. Has anyone here used them?
I have a site I need to move over to a server with Linux, MySQL, lots of database space available, lots of free software available, including PHP. 3ix offers a lot of software. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

IDE recommendations
Date: 09/07/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, web, linux, google
Hello everyone, I was thinking about starting a new web app to teach myself php. I was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for a php IDE for Linux. Code completion, coloring, symbolic debugger are a must. I don't necessarily mind if I have to pay for one, as long as it is worth the money. I've googled and found many, but I wanted to ask the community for personal preferences...
Anyone have any good suggestions?

School file / print / management server ideas
Date: 09/16/06
(IT Professionals) Keywords: software, html, security, virus, antivirus, linux, hosting
So... I am trying to help a (very) small school actually get some IT going. Could I get some opinions on how to build a low-cost file and print server for a place with about 50 computers?
Right now, they're running a mix of MacOS X and Windows XP Home / Win98. They have NO server to speak of (not even an IT guy), and teachers print by connecting to some other workstation's shared printer or they figure it out on their own. They have no backups whatsoever, and many computers don't print because they don't have the right drivers installed, etc. I think they should have some solution that costs very little in recurring maintenance, and I'm torn between the options at this point.
I was thinking of 3 ways to go about this, but I'd love to see what others may recommend...
1) Buy Windows 2000 Server (because it's cheaper) and get 50 CALs.
Perceived pros:
- Any IT guy should know how to help them administer a windows server.
- File sharing and print services are built into the OS, no additional tweaking required.
- Domain controller could help them manage group policy, push software updates out, etc.
- Other software (antivirus management, etc.) can run straight on the DC.
Perceived cons:
- I still think that'll run over $500 for the software licenses, right? Then upgrades, of course.
- System maintenance will be essential if the server's to be kept virus-free. Will maintenance cost more?
2) Build a Linux server that has Samba / CUPS services
Perceived pros:
- Very cheap (free) to set up
- Many features can be added to the server
- Not very susceptible to viruses or other security holes (provided auto updates are in place)
Perceived cons:
- Unfamiliar interface for the non-technical administrator
- Services will have to be set up manually, perhaps tweaks will have to be made to be compatible with newer OSes.
- Can 3rd party software run on this? (i.e. antivirus managment)
- Not any IT guy will know how to fix the server?
3) Buy an appliance built for the job, like the PowerElf II (http://greencomputer.com/solutions/school.shtml)
Perceived pros:
- Quickest setup (possibly)
- Many services provided out of the box (including ones they probably will never need, like email hosting)
- Automated maintenance and backup is part of the system.
Perceived cons:
- Initial cost is $2000 at least, possibly more for hardware maintenance
- Vendor lock-in is possible
- Incompatibilities with 3rd party software??
Anyway, I wondered what you all thought.

I have started developing an interesting PHP application for LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) stack. I have to say it has been an wonderful experience so far.
It is rather simple (really simple) and easy to setup little frameworks (read utility functions in a file) in php for your tasks. PHP has a delicious array of functionalities to use. [...]

Open source and the mass market

(Open Source) Keywords: linux
The great discussion we had on Open Office yesterday stimulated another question.
Why isn't open source stronger in the mass market?
There have been free programs that are strong in the mass market. Firefox is one. OpenOffice is another. Linux is a third. But in each case we're mainly talking about altruism motivating the provider, and we're [...]

Open source trickle-down

(Open Source) Keywords: linux
It is possible to build a credible office PC out of Linux, Open Office and Firefox, but only if you're a sophisticated user. You lose access to content on proprietary platforms, you may have (or fear you may have) trouble communicating with business partners. It's a big risk.

What possible use?
Date: 10/07/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: database, linux
Just arrived from an old data center, with a database on them that I safed, backed-up, and then called the job done. Two of the following:
Pentium III 500 MHz processor on a motherboard with AGP (not AGP 2x or 4x, but first-generation AGP)
768 Megabytes of RAM
52X CD ROM
64M Graphics (seriously nothing stellar)
15 GB hard drive
I can't think of much of anything to do with these machines. Sure, I could throw Linux on them, but why? I don't need a UNIX server, I don't need a cheap DNS machine... They'd barely run Windows XP. The memory is PC-133, so no real use for it.
Anything cool I'm overlooking that could be done with these outdated boxen?

How To Send Mails Using SMTP Server in PHP
Date: 10/09/06

In PHP on Microsoft Windows you have to simply configure two parameters to enable sending mails through SMTP server. In Unix / Linux it is slightly more complicated. The solution, however, is much more powerful and works also on Windows. Let’s first start with Windows.
In Microsoft Windows PHP installation you just have to change two [...]

Configuring Apache to Execute Perl scripts
Date: 10/17/06
(Apache) Keywords: linux, apache
Hi,
I have to work with both to configure an Apache server to execute Perl and/or CGI scripts. I browsed through the Apache.org for some info but maybe it's not there or mabe being a novice I'm not getting it.
I'm using Suse Linux 9.3 at the command line. So that's the extra difficulty.
The server is set up but when I type the address of a Perl file, it simply decides to show me the code, as opposed to executing it.
Have you ever had to configure Apache using Linux from the command line? If yes, would you offer me a piece of your advice?
THANKS!
