Raster to vector translation
Date: 05/02/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: linux
I am not 100% sure if I am posting this on the right community.
Anyway, if anybody could help me convert some .jpg files to vector files (illustrator, freehand, coreldraw formats), then it would be much appreciated. I have tried to do this and also tried using programs called autotrace ( http://autotrace.sourceforge.net). But I have no artistic flair at all. I also am not sure what they are talking about when they describe the problems with my apparently vectorized image(s). Maybe someone knows more about these packages than me. I have freehand 10 , but I run Linux and I am only using it under emulation. I am quite familiar with photoshop, which is not a vector-based drawing program.
The reason I need the image vectorised is for printing onto various things like baseball caps and t-shirts.
Many thanks
(x-posted in some art communities too)

Conferences - where are you going?
Date: 05/02/05
(IT Professionals) Keywords: linux
For those of us lucky enough to get company paid vacation^W^W^Weducation trip budgets, where are you planning on going in 2005?
Our company President just re-initiated conference budgets, but unfortunately he did it AFTER two of the ones I wanted to go to (Novell BrainShare and LinuxWorld/Boston) had already passed. I wouldn't mind LinuxWorld/SF or even MacWorld/SF.. but..
So where are you going?

Has anyone noticed?

(Mozilla) Keywords: web, linux
Has anyonelse noticed in Mozilla 1.7.0 and higher (Mozilla.org build under FC2-Linux, maybe other builds, but I can't check) that clicking the 'screen' button on a comment in the LJ web client causes an immediate crash? Does this also carry over to Firefox? Is it LJ's code or Mozy that's at fault; if indeed this crash happens to you?
Is there a Bugzilla entry on this already? If not; there should be.
Qvacks.

LAMP vs. Microsoft

(Web Development) Keywords: php, mysql, asp, sql, security, linux, microsoft, apache
I have to do a report my class Technical Writing. I have chosen to do a report on the LAMP Architecture vs. Microsoft Line of products. LAMP being Linux, Apache Server, MySQL, and PHP. Microsoft being Microsoft Windows, IIS Server, MS SQL Server, and ASP.NEt. What do you guys think is best? Are there any security flaws in one or the other? Which is more efficient altogether?
If you could help me with this, I would be very appreciative.

How do open source enterprises handle security?
Date: 05/12/05
(Open Source) Keywords: security, linux, microsoft
Security may be one of the biggest challenges facing the open source enterprise. When I say enterprise, of course, I mean enterprise -- hundreds of servers, thousands of desktops, and truly heterogenous environments.Because of Microsoft's desktop dominance it has made important early moves. (And let's not get into how much more secure Linux is than Windows. Patches [...]

Gentoo, Take 1
Date: 05/13/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux
So based on everyone's glowing reviews of Gentoo, I decided to try and install it on my test PC here at work. We're considering porting our app over to Linux and I've been given the task of picking a distro to start with (their paying me to learn Linux, sweet or what?). I wimped out a bit and chose the universal Gentoo ISO.
I must say it is really impressive. At least what I was able to get done today. I got the file system set up and was in the process of installing the Stage 3 tarball when I noticed that it was getting HDD media errors (bad sector) pretty regularly. I assume this means the HDD is probably unstable. Is this correct? I plan on hunting down another HDD (we have a few floating around here) and trying again.
As I speak it's still installing, but I'm pretty sure that the HDD is not to be trusted (unless the errors are normal; which is unlikely).
I am really impressed with the handbook. It really does a great job of walking you through the layout of a Linux installation. I feel much more confident in command-line operation (I haven't used command-line since DOS 6.22!) and I'm starting to get the hang of the file structure. I'm certain that a full install will leave me with a fairly deep understanding of what is under the Linux hood.
This makes me wonder: Are there many other distros that do this? I'm aware of Core, but that is about it. Anyone have any experience with Core? What are it's strengths and weaknesses?
I'm really looking forward to getting this working.
Then I have to learn WINE and try to get our app running on it. If I can run it under WINE and maintain stability, we might be able to convince the powers that be to port a native version. Thanks for everyones help and I'm really happy this community exists.

Knowledge Base Software
Date: 05/14/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: html, java, web, linux, hosting
The company I work for is a Linux web hosting company. And we desperately need a decent knowledge base system. Primarily for internal use, but also so that we can provide direct links back to the KB for customers to read to help us streamline our help desk responses.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking into Twiki, but that requires an enormous amount of setup time. And now I'm looking at FreeMind, but that isn't HTML, its a java applet.

Too much choice!
Date: 05/18/05
(Web Development) Keywords: software, web, linux
I'm looking for recommendations for blog software (e.g. Movable Type, pMachine's ExpressionEngine, WordPress) for my personal website.
The site's quite low volume (friends & family kind of thing) and there will probably only be a couple of contributors (unless the cats learn to type), so I'm looking for something lightweight, simple/quick to setup and, of course, free.
My wife's thinking about using it semi-professionally too - mainly for writing reviews - and I've been toying with a similar idea for my pro site, so we don't want to use something that's overtly advert-ridden. Maybe we need to have multiple instances of the blog software, one for each purpose, to keep things separate?
I like the idea of categorising entries, although I think every product does that these days, and incorporating a news aggregator (I've only looked at NewsGator so far). We already use Gallery for our photos, so incorporating that in some way would be nice, although it's easy enough to just link to it.
I administer our Linux (Fedora) server so any extra services needed to support the blog s/w won't be a problem.
What would you recommend?

Security and the Linux process

In his latest entry, Dana asks whether the Linux process is insecure, because it's not possible to warn the "vendor" before warning the general public about security flaws in Linux. He also notes that "Microsoft has theoretical control of this situation." There are several problems with this line of reasoning. I'm not [...]

Crikey is LAMP ever fast...
Date: 05/19/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: cms, php, templates, mysql, sql, linux, apache
I don't know why I never thought to do it before, but I put some benchmarking code into my CMS project today (PluggedOut CMS) - and was somewhat astounded at how quickly it's throwing pages back at me.
For an "un-cached" page, it's throwing things back in around 0.004 seconds, which I thought was damn fast... but get this - if I cache the page (so it doesn't have to bother building it from templates etc...) - it took just under 0.0004 seconds on average.
I don't know of a better advert for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP quite frankly.
For those interested, the testing is on a Athlon 64 3200 (2.8Ghz), with 1Gb RAM, and a 160Gb HDD. It has Mandrake X64 on it.

Here is a question that lies beyond the normal Linux vs. Windows arguments we make here, but whose answer should concern even Linux users.Where should security live? The facile answer is everywhere. Fileserver question..
Date: 05/21/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software, web, linux
has anyone had any experience with building raid-based file servers in linux?
I'm building one over the summer for my new student house next year, to provide storage for music, films, software etc.
I need at least 500gb of storage, preferably more, with some sort of redundancy. I have an old P2-500 with 128mb of ram sitting about, would this be adequate for about 6 users?
I was thinking of going down the RAID-5 path, as it provides redundancy, and a good ratio of disks to storage capacity.
I'm considering a software-based raid controller card such as this as they are much cheaper than a hardware-based raid card such as this.
Obviously the hardware based card would be faster, but I'm not so bothered about that, I'm more concerned with driver stability and compatability with my os of choice(gentoo)
Also, I assume I would have to run samba on this server to provide access for the llama's im living with next year who run windows.
Has anyone got any tips on securing samba, as I have heard it is fairly insecure, I could block internet access from the firewall, but I would like to run a web server on this box as well, would this be advisable, or would you advise running the web server on a seperate machine?
