1. Transparent Authentication with Apache and NT Authentication?

Date: 06/16/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, html, web, linux, apache

Hey all! I'm a newbie with .htaccess and authentication, and I'm trying to set up some transparent authentication on an Win 32 web Server.

It's like this: We have an intranet and we wish to protect our precious admin pages. I have the folder protected with an .htacess file that references a user/pass file, (Everything works just fine this way,) but we would like to modify it as follows:

We are using Apache 2.0.53 and using the module mod_auth_sspi.so for NT authenticaion. This module let's us capture the NT usernames in an environment variable. (Which makes it convenient for saying "hi" to people through our PHP CGI's.) What we would like to do is restrict access to the admin folder without having any of the administrators enter a user and pass everytime they a'wander to an admin page. So basically,

    - how can we get .htaccess to reference the environment variable for the username? (I'm assuming that's a possibility.)

    - How can we set it up so that it doesn't ask for a user/pass, but rather just blocks out non-admins? (If that's even possible!)

One way that we have tried to do this already is by using the mod_ntml module, which would give us the ability to perform transparent authentication, but unfortunately the only available binary of this module is only compatible with Apache 1.3. If you try using it with 2.0, the server won't restart. There is a mod_ntml available for Apache 2.0, but it's only an uncompiled linux version. (At least the only ones I've found have been.) What I need is either another way of setting up this transparent authenticaion, or I need to get my hands on a binary version of mod_ntml 2.0 for Win 32. (Still scouring the internet, and have e-mailed someone at Sourceforge.net.)

My .htaccess file is very basic, since I'm new to this. Here it is:

    authtype Basic
    authname "OUR_INTRANET"
    authuserfile /html/auth/qausers.pas

    Order allow,deny
    allow from none
    require valid-user
    satisfy any

    Thanks everybody!

  2. Counting installs

Date: 06/21/05 (Open Source)    Keywords: linux

One of the things hampering the whole open source movement today is our failure to count and report our successes. As I put it in something I wrote for Linuxinsider almost two years ago:  In management you get what you measure; in volume sales, you get what the press reports. In the case of Linux [...]

Date: 06/22/05 (Software)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.

Date: 06/22/05 (Open Source)    Keywords: mysql, sql, linux

There's an untold story here, by the way: all the other hardware vendors are reporting their results using Linux. Put Debian with mySQL on this machine, and you'd probably break a $1.20 -and an Apple X-serve using lots of RAM could probably break one dollar because its X-RAID array is so cheap.

  6. Linux not working

Date: 06/22/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: linux, spam

I tried to install Mandriva 10.2/Mandrake 10.1 (tested them both) on my desktop computer. Specs: 2x SATA 160gb and raid0 VIA raid controller. It would install just fine, but when I tried to boot I just get a spam of L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 ....anyidea what is wrong? I installed it like 3 times..same thing. If I use just one sata drive it boots, but it's very buggy, slow, programs wont open etc. I would really want to use linux. But I always have to install XP :(. Is it so that Linux doesn't work on raid0? Would sound a little weird to me.

Getting Linux and MacOS X to run on the main processor is apparently relatively easy, but getting beyond that to tapping the the enormous potential offered by the grid correspondigly difficult.

Has anybody here heard of/used/poked & prodded This?

Finally! A complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.

I probably will check it out a little more when I have the chance but I must admit that when I was looking at Their demo css page and IE broke it, wasn't a good sign.

    Any thoughts?

ps. anybody who thinks people with no knowledge or expertise can make & manage a website obviously hasn't seen the crap out there that gets brought to me as a redesign!

Well to be perfectly honest, I'm bored. I've been looking for a new project or gadget to keep me busy for a while. I've been looking at a cheaper panasonic toughbook on ebay, then at a NEC MobilePro 780 (900's are way too expensive) or just a new pda of some sort (PocketPC or Linux)

I CAN'T Decide what I want to try. Every idea has it's pros and cons:

Toughbook: +very resourceful, -but older, -less battery life, -expensive
Mobilepro: +Inexpensive (~100), -Older, -less capable pda, +unique
Pda: +Newer, +midrange price, +more capable, +many available to choose from, -constantly outdated

I don't know. Call me a fool and his money, but I just need something different and interesting to occupy myself with for a while. Opinions/suggestions welcome.

  13. Webcam Chat program functionality....?

Date: 07/08/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, asp, web, linux

A customer recently sent me a link and expressed interest in adding this functionality to his site.
I've never seen anything like this before, so I'm not really sure what this entails.

Here is the link he provided me with:
    http://latinlifemates.com/services/webcam.asp

From what I understand, he wants to duplicate this "service" on his own site (a similar dating service). His site is php/Linux....If anyone has ever heard of anything like this, please give me some insight....This is not my usual brand of webdev. haha.

In case the link isn't working for some reason, here is a quick run-down:
It appears to be a service offered by a dating company, wherein a (male) client pays said dating company by the minute to chat on a webcam via MSN messenger with another (female) client.
Said dating company will arrange for the female to be at a certain location at a certain time, and the male will be able to video chat with her for a set period of time.

.....wtf? call me naiive, but I had no idea that this "video prostituting" actually existed (lol)

Anyway.....Thanks in advance if anyone can offer any information on things of this nature. :)

  15. Fetching erased data!

Date: 07/11/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: programming, web, linux

Okay guys, trust me I looked at the rules before posting this but I need some major help ASAP.
I am quite experienced working with computers (Linux, Programming, web design, etc.)
However, I haven't learned anything about finding old data that someone deleted from their computer or overrided.

My mother is a court reporter, she's spent this entire weekend working on an 800 page transcript.
She somehow erased the entire document and then saved a blank document under the same name of the old document, therefore wiping out many hours of work.
She is currently having a heart attack. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to go back and fetch the data.
I've told her not to save anything else until I see what I can do.

Can anyone please point me to how I might find the info and bring it back up? Please? She was dreading this particular job all week and I'd really like to help her get it back.
Links, explainations, anything would be great help.

X-Posted, sorry if its not allowed, this is a bit too important to care much.

Date: 07/14/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: linux

    Ok, this is confusing.

I have two machines - a server and a workstation - both running debian linux. Previously my workstation was Windows XP, so the main file disk (which has about 50GB of files on it) is compressed NTFS.

I wanted to reformat this disk to ext3 so I rsynced (rsync -avz) the files over the network onto my server (yes, slow, but I don't have any free drive slots on my server). Before I reformat I needed to make sure that the files had copied ok.

First, I tested the filesystem against the copy using du, but found a difference of about 5MB. In windows, comparing the directories found that the copy was missing 4 files.

A diff -r of both directories showed nothing.

Any ideas what could explain the missing data?

Should I perhaps not use rsync to copy the files and instead copy it over using nfs or something?

Date: 07/15/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: programming, technology, linux

Hi, I've been watching this community for a couple of days now, so I guess I better introduce myself.

The name's Sam. I'm 17 years of age, currently doing a-levels in Milton keynes, england. I'm hoping to go to university next year, aiming for a degree in computer games technology in manchester, or computer games programming in Huddersfield. Haven't made my mind up yet.

If you haven't already noticed, I'm a total gaming nut. Mostly into rpgs, some strategies, and some first person shooters. Ooh, and I love retro gaming. I also run linux on my old box too. I tried to install it on my new box, but failed. I'm a total linux noob, but love it all the same.

My current system is an amd athlon 64 3400+ s939, geforce 6600, 1gb of ram, running xp and almost SuSE linux 9.2, but I'm still working on that.

My old pc is diabolical, and I don't know much about it, other than its a 750mhz amd with 128mb of ram and 32mb graphics card, running win98 and linux. Oh, and my other old pc is an oric.

I suppose you can find anything else about me from my geek code:
