  2. Tips on creating a website?

Date: 05/26/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, microsoft

I'm new to this community, and would love to get some tips from you all!

I'm a cosplayer (someone who creates and models costumes as a hobby)
Here is my Deviant Art page: http://ashuracastle.deviantart.com/

I want my own website with my own domain name. Unfortuanately, I'm almost completely computer illeterate!

I used to have my own website. It was a very simple design I created in Microsoft Frontpage. My University hosted it (because it provides free websites for its students). However, they took it down once I graduated.

Do you have any advice on how to choose a new place to host my site? I really dont know how much space I will need. Im guessing alot since It will be filled with photos.

    Thanks for any help!

  3. Novell document dump makes it look like a scandal

Date: 05/27/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

The Washington game of dumping incriminating documents late on a Friday is well-known. When someone does it, suspicions are raised. (Image from the blog of La Shawn Barber.) Now Novell has done just that with its Friday night document dump on the Microsoft agreement. Just to make us even more suspicious, ...

  4. Nonsense in Firefox, Slackware 11 Xorg, and the scrolly mouse

Date: 05/29/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web, microsoft

This is sort of an embarassing problem, but I blame Microsoft for introducing something as stupid as a mouse clit with vertical and horizontal scrolling (circa 2003 or so) in the first place.

I have the "standard" $12 microsoft optical mouse, the one that can be adapted to a USB port, connected to the PS/2 port.

After changing the mouse detection to "Auto", the scroll wheel worked properly. It was previously set to PS/2 protocol. Fine.

Imagine my horror when I started using firefox and really weird shit started happening with the scroll wheel. At first, it was the part where if you scroll down to the end of a webpage, it advances or retreats in history. WTF? Who thought that up?!? Why? Anyways, that was apparently a very common problem for all sorts of Firefox users. I wasted no time disabling that.

Once I started scrolling with some vigor again, I noticed something odd: the mouse would scroll slower when I moved the scroll wheel fast. I thought nothing of it until I ended up at a page that didn't fit in the Firefox window horizontally or vertically.

Scrolling fast actually scrolls diagonally thru the document.

I went into about:config and changed all the settings for firefox horizontal scrolling with a mouse to zeros. The horrible horizontal scrolling stopped, but the paradoxical slow scrolling when moving the wheel quickly is still a hideous problem.

I can't figure out if Firefox is just plain FUBAR (After the issue with Scrolling Thru History! function, I have zero faith in the ap's handling of mouse events) or if Xorg has decided that every genuine microsoft mouse ever made must have a joystick scroller - mine does not.

    HALP!

Via KT400 with 1.833 Athlon, 768MB DDR333, nothing odd in /var/log/messages or dmesg. Never had this problem or anything like it with the previous install of RedHat 9 and Mozilla or SeaMonkey or anything else (tho in all fairness, the firefox package wouldn't even install in that OS, so who knows...)

  5. Zemlin of Linux Foundation lets fly at Microsoft

Date: 05/29/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: linux, microsoft

The reason for the merger which created the Linux Foundation was to give open source a big, unified platform from which to respond to threats. Date: 05/29/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: mysql, software, sql, linux, microsoft, apache

Writer Rodney Gedda at Computerworld writes that aQuantive, the online ad agency Microsoft is buying for $6 billion, is an open source play. The reason? 7. Serious lagging issues

Date: 05/30/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, html, java, security, virus, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft

This may be a basic problem, but it's an extremely frustrating one.

There are times using my computer when it is just extremely lag-gy. One of the primary times is when I come back to it and wake it from the screen saver. Let me give you an example of a usual situation, as it happened just now.

I came in to the computer room to look up something on the computer. It came out of the screen saver, and was sitting on a FireFox screen. I went to file and New Window, and it took THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS to open a new FireFox window. Once it dragged itself through all that it's fine, but that's a terribly annoying problem to have.

Heh, I just went to the search function to find Hijack This, and it took 17 seconds for the Search window to come up! It hasn't always been this way, things used to pop right up! Now, I know that a reformat would probably fix it all but...wow that can be a headache. Could it be anything else?

I am running a Compaq Presario with a 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor and Windows XP. 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

  8. The proprietary model thrives in hardware

Date: 05/31/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: software, microsoft

While the subject here is open source, I do want to make mention of how the proprietary software world will survive, a story ripped from today's headlines. Hardware. The Microsoft Milan Table is more than a nifty interface solution. Like the iPod, it's an expression of software in hardware form. Open source has ...

  9. Open source does the good-cop, bad-cop routine

One of the great frustrations in dealing with Microsoft on open source questions is its tendency to play "good-cop bad-cop" games. (The image at right is actually the logo of a record label in Boston, which you might want to visit.) Good-cop bad-cop is a great interrogation technique "As Seen On ...

Date: 06/01/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: software, microsoft

The Free Software Foundation has released its "last call" draft of GPL V3, along with a personal plea from Richard Stallman for folks to upgrade from V2. (This gadget-loving Tux was found at Computer Shopper.) Most discussion of the new release will focus on Novell, which won clearance for its Microsoft ...

  11. The power to route around bottlenecks

Date: 06/04/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

The only real demand we should make of Microsoft in this whole patent mess, as Mark Shuttleworth of Ubuntu said recently, is this power to route around the bottleneck. Tell us where the claimed violations are, and we'll fix them.

Date: 06/05/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

The fact is that Microsoft can't be completely written out of the open source world. Too many companies run mixed environments. If we try to boycott each customer touched by this boilerplate we're going to be in a very lonely place.

Date: 06/08/07 (SQL Server)    Keywords: microsoft

I am now fully aware, after two days of trying to figure this out, that Microsoft has not manufactured a Jet driver for 64-bit SSIS, and has no plans to do so.

Has anyone come out with a third-party Jet driver that's available now?

  14. What is Microsoft really gaining from open source FUD?

Date: 06/08/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

So long as the game remains one against the many, Microsoft has every incentive to keep acting as it does. But if another, equally large, and just as ferocious beast stood up for open source, I believe the game would change in a hurry.

Date: 06/15/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

While it's amusing to read that "Novell is gunning for a chunk of the office market share from Microsoft" that's not really the case. Through its November deal with Microsoft, Novell became part of the Microsoft "keiretsu."

  17. Jobs does Windows with open source

Date: 06/16/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

Think of Safari as Apple outreach. Apple is the most proprietary company in the computing universe, more proprietary even than Microsoft. It's tossing some open source code over the side, wondering what the so-called "community" will do with it.

Date: 06/18/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: microsoft

The point is that controversy and suspicion follow Microsoft wherever it goes in the open source world. This is a price it has chosen to pay. Perhaps it is unaware of how high this price is. Perhaps the company does not care. But every day the price rises.

  19. DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR

Date: 06/20/07 (SQL Server)    Keywords: sql, web, microsoft

    SSIS.

Can anyone please explain to me what the above error means and how to correct it? Microsoft's error reference is its usual helpful self, and it seems no one has gotten this error (or asked about it anywhere on the web) in my particular situation. Before someone suggests it, no, I cannot permanently change the type of output.

I'm trying to take the restuls of a stored procedure and export them to Excel in a data flow task. This is a common thing at my workplace, and we have hundreds of them that work correctly. Every once in a while, though, one of them starts dying, and it always throws the error in the subject line, invariably preceded by a DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. The going wisdom for people using OLEDB or SQL SERVER destinations is that it actually is what it says it is-- there's a problem with a transformation. So I figured I'd give that a shot with the Excel Destination. I switched it over to Fast Load (in order to be able to get to the MaxBatchSize parameter, to set it to 1-- I don't usually use it), dropped all the columns but one, and tried to execute the task with that single mapping, of a four-byte signed integer. I redirected the error output to a text file, but it's a four-byte signed integer, how can anything go wrong?

Here's a piece of the text file that comes out.

    ,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,2,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,2,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1
    ,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,-1071607685,-1

Obviously, the problem is not with four bytes being too small to hold the integers that are failing out on me. The brilliant -1071607685 error code translates to "no status is available." Which tells me less than nothing.

I have deleted and recreated the destination spreadhseet to make sure there's no corruption in a template or anything. I've tried this single-mapping approach with every column (Unicode string, four-byte signed int, and currency), and, of course, with all columns. I've read every page I can find on the internet about DTS_E_OLEDBERROR, DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR, and -1071607685, and tried every applicable suggestion. It works wonderfully when I send the output to a flat file destination, but as I said previously, that is not an option that's available to me in production, only in testing-- I must use the Excel Destination for this client.

I don't even know where to begin looking at this point. I've exhausted all my possibilities. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.
