Copying Microsoft in a good way

Aping a world class business process is never a bad thing. Even when it comes from Microsoft.
So it is that the Open Solutions Alliance (OSA), which was created to build the Linux channel, has created a customer-level membership class. Redmayne-Bentley, a UK stock broker, is the first customer member.
Microsoft has brought customers into its own channel [...]

Ajax
Date: 07/06/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, html, xml, database, java, microsoft
I'm trying to teach myself how to use Ajax with PHP. It's been years since I've used JavaScript for anything so I'm beyond rusty.
I've been using the Apress Beginning Ajax with PHP book and I've been learning quite a bit, but I haven't found a single code sample from that book that actually worked the way it was written.
So, I come to you with my situation: Right now, I have one field in a form. There will eventually be more, but I'd like to see if I can get just a single field to work for me before I start jumping ahead. Anyway: 1 field on a form, and one submit button. In theory, when I click on the submit button, I'd like the value to be input into the database.
I have bigger ideas for what I want to do with this project, but for now, just a little success with the database updating would be nice.
Note: The code is based off of a contacts form I found on the internet. I figured for learning purposes, it would be a good way to start, that way, once I figure out the trick to making ajax do what I want in this instance, I can write my own.

Web Browser code in C#
Date: 07/12/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: browser, web, microsoft
No Microsoft flames, if you please - this project has a requirement that it be .Net in C#.
I'm looking for a starting point: a web browser written in C# that I can then customize for a proof of concept. I've checked CodeProject, but nobody's written a decent one that I can see.
Encapsulating the System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser object in .Net 2.0 would be more than good, if the project then hooked all the events and provided customizable controls.
The goal here is to then add logic that does pre-processing on web pages as they come in.
Other than CodeProject, does anyone have a suggestion on where I might look for available code?

Does open source make business decisions political?
Date: 07/16/07
(Open Source) Keywords: microsoft
If Microsoft were going up against other proprietary vendors in these cases, politics would not likely be an issue. One result is that Microsoft also ends up making political arguments in pursuit of its business objectives. And political activists become agitated on its side as well as that of open source, which leads to the open source=communism argument.

Mp3 Codec/Vista
Date: 07/23/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, microsoft
Crossposted: My apologies to those who have to see me twice.
So I'm sitting here with a new computer (Vista from Dell) and a new phone (RAZR) and I wanted to create my own ring tone from some mp3s I have to put on my phone.
Seems simple enough.
But I continue to get an error with this multimedia studio from Motorola when it comes to saving the file.
This is what I receive if I just try to transfer the file to the phone.
---------------------------
Melody Studio
---------------------------
Unsupported format
(mp3 codec may be inappropriate or missing)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
This is what I receive if I try to save the file to my HD.
---------------------------
Melody Studio
---------------------------
Failed to create file
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
So, it seems that there's not an mp3 encoder installed, which is also what Motorola's website states for this particular error.
But how the heck do I get it loaded?
I'm normally very handy on computers but for the life of me I can't figure out where to get one nor how to make it work. I attempted to download Audacity and LAME a few months ago when I went through all this but I couldn't seem to get that to do what I wanted. I've searched Microsoft and can't seem to find a way to do this through them. So, here I am.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Assigning values to variables in SSIS
Date: 07/24/07
(SQL Server) Keywords: sql, web, microsoft
Two questions in one week. Sheesh. I apologize in advance.
As someone on the MS forums said, assigning values to variables in SSIS is way harder than it needs to be. I've read about fifty webpages on this, and they all boil down to the same two basic solutions, and both give me the same errors. I've tried this two different ways:
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
Public Class ScriptMain
Public Sub Main()
'
Dim vars As Variables
Dts.VariableDispenser.LockOneForWrite("intTYPeriodFrom", vars)
vars(0).Value = CInt(Dts.Variables("intThisWeekSysno").Value) - 51
vars.Unlock()
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
End Sub
...and...
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
Public Class ScriptMain
Public Sub Main()
WriteVariable("intTYPeriodFrom", CInt(Dts.Variables("intThisWeekSysno").Value) - 51)
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
End Sub
Private Sub WriteVariable(ByVal varName As String, ByVal varValue As Integer)
Try
Dim vars As Variables
Dts.VariableDispenser.LockForWrite(varName)
Dts.VariableDispenser.GetVariables(vars)
Try
vars(varName).Value = varValue
Catch ex As Exception
Throw ex
Finally
vars.Unlock()
End Try
Catch ex As Exception
Throw ex
End Try
End Sub
...and get the same results with each. Those results:
if the read-only and read-write sections of the script task are blank, I get a "the element cannot be found in a collection" exception. If I add the variables to the script task r-o and r-w fields, I get deadlock. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? (I have found the Set Variable custom task, and I love it, but this code will be going on a production server owned by another company, so I can't install custom tasks to it.) Knowing me, it's something obvious.
Grazie...

Error 1005
Date: 08/02/07
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: mysql, database, sql, microsoft, google
This one's got me at the end of my rope, and none of the answers I'm finding searching in the many places I've searched have given me any help, so I'll ask you guys.
First off: I am brand new (as in a couple of weeks) to MySQL, after moving to Ubuntu (Feisty) at home. (Goodbye Microsoft.) I'm a SQL Server DBA/DWA/Database Developer/jack-of-all-trades at work, so I do have some DB experience, just not with MySQL.
Anyway, I've created a schema and the tables in it. Now I'm trying to relate those tables. All use the InnoDB engine.* The guinea pigs I'm using are the BOOK and AUTHOR tables, and I'm trying to relate the ID field in AUTHOR to the AUTHORID field in BOOK. (And, yes, I've tried changing the name of ID to AUTHORID with no success.) Both are type INT. ID/AUTHORID is an ident-seeded primary key. AUTHORID in the BOOK table is a foreign key. Or it's supposed to be, but when I try to relate them, I get the infamous error 1005 (can't create table './directory/filename.frm'). I've found extensive discussion on this at ubuntuforums, forums.mysql.com, and a number of blogs, and have checked everything I've found, modified everything I can, and I still get the error. Basically, if you search on "error 1005" on google and check the first 150 non-repeating pages that come up, I've tried/checked everything that comes up to no avail. I'm at a loss for what do do next, and hoping someone has some ideas.
Also, I tried running a MySQL instance on my XP machine at work, created the exact same tables the exact same way, and tried the relation. It worked on the first try without a hitch.
If anyone's got some help, I'd be truly grateful. Thanks. If more info is needed, I'll report back tonight when I'm actually sitting at my Ubuntu machine.
* As a side note, for philosophical purposes only: why are there so many available engines that don't support foreign keys? Do that many people create non-relational databases? Just wondering.
