Stupid Question
Date: 04/10/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: spyware, microsoft, google
I'm dealing with yet another machine for The Charity. This one has been *royally* pwnz0rzed by a variety of scumware, such that it becomes unusable if you connect to the Internet. It's quite possibly the worst machine of the lot, in terms of quantity of crap. 350 Spybot hits, and 950 Adaware hits, plus about 40 CounterSpy hits, and still it's almost saturating my 4.5Mbit connection and using 90%+ of CPU.
Is there somewhere I can download some kind of Windows Update monolith that I can burn to CD(s) and install that way? I'd spend the evening trudging around the various Microsoft sites, but frankly I've got better things to do, and there's more than a slim chance one of you guys has been in this boat. I do not trust Google results for Windows Update, any more than I'd trust them for Spyware Removal or Free Porn.
Thanks,

MICROSOFT WORD FILES!!
Date: 04/10/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: microsoft
Hi everyone.
Loopy Peach here! Back again because she’s useless with computers! I hope you can help me out.
When I was at home I saved a Microsoft Word document onto a floppy disc so I could take it to my friends house to work on. Now that I am at my friends house I cannot open the files on his computer!
It seems that we have different versions of Microsoft Word! The file extension on the document we are trying to open ends with .WPS and the Word files on his computer end with .DOC
So how can I open my .WPS file on his .DOC computer?
PLEASE help! I don’t really want to travel all the way back home because of this :(
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you have any further questions, let me know!
*hugs*
Peach xx

stupid question, I know...
Date: 04/14/05
(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: microsoft
I just bought a nice old, cheap laptop yesterday. It is running Win98SE, and uses WordPad as its word processor.
I was wondering if there was a site where I could download Microsoft Word for 98? Every site I've found so far only has patches and the like, and I really prefer Word over WordPad.
Thank you!

Firefox Pros and Cons
Date: 04/15/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: software, browser, css, security, microsoft, google
I'm not really looking for an answer in this post, mostly just the community's thoughts.
The high school that I attend has internet access, like most other high schools now a days, but our computer tech seems to think that Internet Explorer is the browser of choice and won't even consider looking at anything else. He's dependant on Microsoft and can't really think outside of the box. Anyways, he told me that for him to do anything, the district would have to put Firefox (the browser that I'm pushing) on the "aproved software list". I can come up with several key "pros" that Firefox has over IE, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me some that I'm overlooking. Here's what I have:
- Pop-up blocking
- Correct CSS rendering
- Tabbed Browsing
- Increased stability (has only crashed once on me)
- Increased security (in respect to its lack of security holes that have plagued IE since forever)
- Easy access to various search engines
- Constantly updated to fix security holes
- Completely free
If I have any misinformation, I was just led to believe it from whatever source, so sorry about that. I tried mozilla.org for any other differences but couldn't come up with any.
Also, right before I posted this, I thought I should search google just one last time to pick up anything I might have left off. This site sounds very persuasive. Maybe I should send most of this article or a link to it to the District instead?

Direct X 9.0 SDK Installation
Date: 04/18/05
(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: programming, technology, microsoft
I'm trying to install Direct X 9.0 SDK. I'm running WinXP Pro with Visual Studio .NET 2003. I have the exe to install on a CD that came with a book I recently bought (Jim Adams, Programming Role Playing Games with Direct X, 2nd edition, Course Technology). When I tried to install that version, I got an error from the WinZip Self-Extractor when it was extracting in %Installation Path%/Samples/C#/(Something, I forget). I figured that I wouldn't worry about it and download the latest version from Microsoft (April 2005).
I've tried several times to install the April 2005 version and I always receive this error: Could not create "C:\RPG Programming Stuff\Direct X 9\Samples\C++\DirectSound\SoundFX" - unzip operation cancelled.
Can someone please help me? By the way, if anyone else has installed the Direct X SDK, would they know what it puts in your computer? I already have the folders Documentation, Extras, Include, Lib and Redist installed under %Installation Path% also created with a whole bunch of subdirectries and files. I'd like to know if I'm only missing some samples and not part of the actual Direct X code needed to make programs!

Open source and Firefox
Date: 04/19/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: software, linux, microsoft
A couple articles I've come across today that I thought I might share in case people missed them.
I found both on Slashdot, not surprisingly.
The first is The Pros And Cons Of Firefox, by Fred Langa on InformationWeek. Although he makes some good points for either side of the debate, he does miss on key area. There may be as many bugs in Mozilla software as in Microsoft, the major difference is what is likely to happen when someone finds this vulnerability. I think Open Source/Linux supporters are more likely to create a patch and pass it on quickly.
The difference is that the people who know how to read and write the code for Linux operating systems are part of the open source community and there are likely far more of them than the ones who would take advantage of the bug for profit or whatever.
Not the same with Microsoft. Some people might alert them, but I think the ones looking for the vulnerabilities are the ones wanting to exploit them. Microsoft's code is not open source as everyone knows, so there is no intelligent user base checking the code to ferrett out these bugs and fix them quickly.
The second article was all about users. The full article is in the Boston Globe, but I only read the summary on Slashdot.
