Does Longhorn matter?

Microsoft's Jim Allchin is out plugging "Longhorn," even though the OS isn't expected to be released for more than another year. Apparently, not content to copy features from the Mac OS and Linux, the new MS mantra ("It just works") is also borrowed from Apple's ad campaigns. In the Fortune piece, [...]

Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith says the company wants a sit-down with the open source community. That kind of talk brings out the Blofeld in me. Transparent table background problem in IE - works in Firefox
Date: 05/09/05
(HTML Help) Keywords: css, html, microsoft
I'm trying to customize my journal a bit, and am having a bit of a strange problem with IE. It seems to randomly choose which tables it wants to display properly with my current style. Firefox always displays them correctly. My journal elf_inside has a dark background with a screened table background using advanced S2 editing.
I'm asking here because it doesn't seem to be an S2 problem, rather it is an HTML issue. I'm not sure why IE would apparently randomly treat tables differently on the same page!
The css options I have set are:
table, tr, td, .shadowed
{
background-color: transparent;
background-image: url("http://host/image.gif");
background-repeat: repeat;
background-attachment: fixed;
}
I also tried
filter:alpha(opacity=80);filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(opacity=80); -moz-opacity:0.8;
but this had 2 bad side effects: The text and images went transparent too (not desired), as well as it slowed firefox down hugely.
In firefox, the transparent gif seems to work perfectly as a table background. In IE, it works *sometimes*.. but not *all the time*... Anybody know how to get this to display correctly in IE?

I have to do a report my class Technical Writing. I have chosen to do a report on the LAMP Architecture vs. Microsoft Line of products. LAMP being Linux, Apache Server, MySQL, and PHP. Microsoft being Microsoft Windows, IIS Server, MS SQL Server, and ASP.NEt. What do you guys think is best? Are there any security flaws in one or the other? Which is more efficient altogether?
If you could help me with this, I would be very appreciative.

viewing certificate services database
Date: 05/20/05
(C Sharp) Keywords: database, asp, security, web, microsoft
Hello All!
I need to have access to certificate services database from the c# web application. Approach described in msdn lib(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/seccrypto/security/viewing_the_certificate_services_database.asp) does not seem to work. Or maybe i can't understand what the realy mean...
certadm.dll doesn't provide class implementation for IEnumCERTVIEWROW, IEnumCERTVIEWATTRIBUTE and IEnumCERTVIEWEXTENTION. Interface is an abstract entity as far as i know. (Unfortunately i don't know much...) So, how can one (as "ICertView::OpenView creates a IEnumCERTVIEWROW object") create an instance of an interface object with no corresponding class?
One version of my code looks something like this:
CERTADMINLib.IEnumCERTVIEWROW cvr;
CERTADMINLib.IEnumCERTVIEWATTRIBUTE cva;
CERTADMINLib.CCertViewClass CertView = new CERTADMINLib.CCertViewClass();
CertView.OpenConnection("pcitis31.cert.cern\\CERTSubCA");
CertView.SetTable(0);
CertView.SetResultColumnCount(-2);
cvr = CertView.OpenView();
cva = cvr.EnumCertViewAttribute(0); //-here i get COMException with 0x8000ffff code (Catastrophic failure)
Am i missing something, or am i absolutely on the wrong way?
Examples shown in msdn are quite similar(but in vb):
ex.1
' Declare the IEnumCERTVIEWROW object variable.
Dim objRow As IEnumCERTVIEWROW
' Instantiate the row object.
Set objRow = objView.OpenView
' Use the object as needed.
' When done processing, free the object.
Set objRow = Nothing
ex.2
' Initialize an IEnumCERTVIEWCOLUMN object.
Dim objCol As IEnumCERTVIEWCOLUMN
Set objCol = objRow.EnumCertViewColumn()
' Use objCol as needed.
' ...
' Free objCol when done.
Set objCol = Nothing
Any help, ideas are very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Security is strategic
