does this sound like a virus?
Date: 06/24/05
Keywords: virus, spyware
Every now and then, internet explorer will start randomly opening itself repeatedly. If I leave it alone, it'll do this 40 or 50 times. Actually I don't know how many times it'll do it because I always just reboot. Does this sound like a virus? Spyware? Ever heard of this before?

I have computer that was assembled by an acquaintance. It had Windows 98 from a dubious source. I formatted it to get rid of some problems. I'd like to install a legal copy of XP home, but it's $200 at the store! Is there an affordable solution? Thanks.

Excel

Keywords: no keywords
Hi everyone, new to the community.
I have a question about Excel, I have a few workbooks with forms that need to be filled out with a lot of the same information. The fields are all named to specify them.
I'd like to create a macro that will populate the fields (regardless of what workbook is open) with information, but I am not really too familiar with macros and can't find a lot of info.
I tried creating a new workbook with my info I want filled in, and recorded it with me copy and pasting into each field but it gave me "Object Defined Error".
Any help is appreciated!

Installing WinXP
Date: 06/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
I recently got a (legal) copy of a Window XP Pro installation CD & key through the MSDNAA. (My school's CS department just got a subscription and a computer science major got the copy for me.) I've been trying to use it to upgrade from Windows Millennium.
Problem: it tells me that my CD key isn't valid. It's the correct key. I've checked it and rechecked it, typed and retyped it. I've tried the hints on this troubleshooting page--installing from a command prompt, copying files onto my hard drive and installing from my hard drive, running scandisk, booting with very few things running and then installing...no success. It continues to tell me my key is invalid. Is there anything else I should try? I really, really want to switch to Windows XP.
Thanks!

Secret Logs?
Date: 06/17/05
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, I've heard that everything - history, cookies, programs, everything - is saved on your computer for others to access it. For instance, if I install "MSN Messenger," then un-install it, it still remains on my computer in a "secret" sort of place.
Anyways, besides clearing my history, cache, etc. is there any way to access these "secret" logs and clear them (if they do in fact exist)? I'd imagine they'd take up a great deal of space.
Thanks. :)

excel question
Date: 06/07/05
Keywords: no keywords
hello, i'm new. and i'm so pleased to have found you :-)
i've been using excel a tremendous amt in my relatively new job... i'm pretty good w/ it but i know there's a lifetime's more knowledge i could accumulate. i'm trying to work on that accumulation now. ;-)
so first a specific question...
i have a column of cells (column A) with a combination of letters/#s, but i would like to strip out the letters and sort by the #s. The problem is, the numerical code in each cell is prefixed by one word in some cases, in other cases, two words. so if i use the text-to-column feature to separate the cells at the space, i get some of the #s in column B, some in column C (where there are 2 words preceding the #). [hopefully this is making sense so far -- i fear i'm making this explanation excessively complex.] is there a merge perhaps, such that i can get the data from columns B & C to combine into one column?
thank you :-)

I've probably asked this way to many times but I'm an idiot and keep forgetting. But, on windows media player, I want to copy/paste an image from a video I'm watching but I can't remember how. It's something ctrl +alt + a letter and I've went through the alphabet and couln't get anything to happen. I've tried print but it does something very odd to the image once I set it into photoshop or paint. Help?

MS Word 2003 Help Please!
Date: 05/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hello
Im having some formatting issues and really hope someone can help me with this. Anyways, Im writing up a lab report and there are numerous .jpg files incorporated into the document. One of the images happens to be a bit on the large size, so to make it stay on the page I want, I dropped the margin down a bit. Now when I look at my document, the margin dropped on all 10 pages! Is there any way to adjust the lower margin for only one page, and not have it carry to all the others? I really dont want to shrink the image any more because its starting to look bad. Couldnt find anything about this in the help files either.
(using ms word 2003)
Thanks!!

Windows Media Player
Date: 05/13/05
Keywords: web
I'm hoping that someone can help with some issues I'm having with my Windows Media Player 9. A couple of days ago, my daughter (who downloads songs from AOL's search engine) informed me of an error message upon her starting Windows, something along the lines of "a file has corrupted the library. a new library will be formed." A day later, she finds she is unable to play the audio-visual song downloads on WMP9, getting the error message: "WMP is unable to access the file", linking her to the official error message (C00D11D2),
Windows Media Player cannot access the file. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
1. This file is currently in use. Close the file, and then try again.
2. You do not have permission to access the server or other location where the file is stored. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again.
3. You do not have permission to access the proxy server. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again.
4. If you are trying to copy a track from a CD to your hard disk, you may not have permission to copy to the specified hard disk location. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again. If the problem persists, try copying to another folder.
To change the folder where tracks are copied to
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Copy Music tab.
Click the Change button.
Select another folder in which to store your digital media files, and then click OK.
–or-
Click Make New Folder, enter the name of the new folder, and then click OK.
(Permission for the server, access rights, proxy servers? I'm lost)
In the end, WMP9 gave my step-daughter the option to upgrade to WMP10, which she did, but the problem continued. When she informed me of the problem, I did utilize the Add/Remove option to rollover from WMP10 back to WMP9, but still the problem persists. I am able to download and play Audio/Visual WMP files, but her purely audio WMP song files keep giving us the "WMP is unable to access the file" error message.
Does anyone have a clue about how to go about rectifying this?
I've been trolling websites with little success. I have a vague understanding of how computers work but have to admit I'm rather clueless when it comes to the intricacies.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Help!
Date: 04/26/05
Keywords: technology
All right, so I'm in eighth grade, and I have the option to get out of one of my technology classes, Computer Applications for next year in high school. To do this, I need to take a test...the test will cover Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. Now, I know Word and Powerpoint both fairly well (though any help with those would be appreciated, also) but I've never used Excel in my life - and that's what the test is mostly based on. If anyone could give me major help with learning this program (I don't even know what it's for) it would be appreciated like you have no idea. The test is May fourteenth, by the way. Thank you so much!

Stupid question?

Keywords: no keywords
Eegh.
Okay, quick question, and I'm hoping it's not stupid or already covered in this community or I'm gonna feel pretty dumb.
I have two computers. One is a Dell Dimension 2400 with WinXP. The other is a G4 PowerMac with OSX 10.2.8. The Dell has a modem, the Mac does not. I want to get the Mac online. I'm aware that the only real thing I need to get is the crossover cable. However, what do I do on the PC end of things once I've got the cable into both computers? I know very little about Windows, but knowing what I do, I'm sure there's a wizard for my issue. (There's a wizard for everything, it seems.) I don't know where to find it, though.

Direct X 9.0 SDK Installation
Date: 04/18/05
Keywords: programming, technology, microsoft
I'm trying to install Direct X 9.0 SDK. I'm running WinXP Pro with Visual Studio .NET 2003. I have the exe to install on a CD that came with a book I recently bought (Jim Adams, Programming Role Playing Games with Direct X, 2nd edition, Course Technology). When I tried to install that version, I got an error from the WinZip Self-Extractor when it was extracting in %Installation Path%/Samples/C#/(Something, I forget). I figured that I wouldn't worry about it and download the latest version from Microsoft (April 2005).
I've tried several times to install the April 2005 version and I always receive this error: Could not create "C:\RPG Programming Stuff\Direct X 9\Samples\C++\DirectSound\SoundFX" - unzip operation cancelled.
Can someone please help me? By the way, if anyone else has installed the Direct X SDK, would they know what it puts in your computer? I already have the folders Documentation, Extras, Include, Lib and Redist installed under %Installation Path% also created with a whole bunch of subdirectries and files. I'd like to know if I'm only missing some samples and not part of the actual Direct X code needed to make programs!
