Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, Clustering.
Date: 04/15/05
Keywords: security
First off, if anyone know of any tutorials for this stuff, please share.
I'm running this under vmware for now until I'm ready to make a real set of computers.
I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise on two vmware machines, and one of them I created an active directory.
I went into the system settings and had the second vmware machine successfully "join" my domain. However, after reboot and I attempt to log into the domain, I get the error:
"The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The name or security ID (SID) of the domain specified is inconsistent with the trust information for that domain."
What am I doing wrong?

stupid question, I know...

I just bought a nice old, cheap laptop yesterday. It is running Win98SE, and uses WordPad as its word processor.
I was wondering if there was a site where I could download Microsoft Word for 98? Every site I've found so far only has patches and the like, and I really prefer Word over WordPad.
Thank you!

Hi all :)

I just got a brand new computer today, got it set up, and have been working away fine for the past few hours. Just now all of my IE windows vanished. I opened a new one, tried to open another and it wouldn't, the new one replaced the old one.
This has happened to me before, on my old computer, but I no longer have the link that explained how to correct this problem. It's something very, very simple, if I remember correctly, that involved going into options, I THINK. It really is quite frustrating, as I'm sure you know.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

What is the best way to know how much memory belongs to the process? It seems that nor WorkingSetSize, not PagefileUsage gives the exact number.
PROCESS_MEMORY_COUNTERS pmc;
if ( GetProcessMemoryInfo(GetCurrentProcess(), &pmc, sizeof(pmc)) )
File << "\tMemory=" << f(pmc.WorkingSetSize, pmc.PagefileUsage);

MSN's "Improved" Search Technology?

(MSN Search for "Horrid Operating System").
One website (mine) was responsible for this. And MSN claims its search technology is "improved"?
It's somewhat shocking that a single website can skew search results so dramatically.

Jpeg's

Hello Everyone
I have a question about Jpeg's.
Has anyone ever come across a situation where the "pre-view" picture and the actually picture are out of whack? I have read something about this in a journal on LJ but have lost it. I've looked around with google but that hasn't shed any light. To see what I mean download this picture http://www.mickygee.com/tracks_2.jpg. If you use windows explorer and are viewing "thumbnails" you'll see the original picture thats in colour but when you click to open it you get the black and white version! I'm using windows XP by the way.

Video card problems + weird Windows issues
Date: 03/23/05
Keywords: web, spyware
Recently I've been having some problems with my computer which is running Windows 2000 Pro and has a AMD Thoroughbred CPU. Some things I did before I started having problems: I recently took out the RAM and then put it back in (long story) but the computer seems to recognize that okay. I also recently tried to add to it a DVD burner, but for some reason I was having problems with the computer recognizing it. Power was going to it just fine but it wasn't being recognized by PnP. I haven't installed the drivers yet, but I'm not sure that's the problem. Regardless, that's something to tackle another day. I also got a "new" monitor which works just beautifully. Unfortunately, I'm not home right now so I can't give the specs on all of those.
Anyway, the problem is that the video card wasn't working at all although it had been working quite well in the past. It is Geforce 4 MX 440 I believe. If I recall, it stopped working before I tried it with the new monitor. Regardless, it doesn't work with either of them. So I uninstalled it and was going to try to reinstall the drivers to see if that would fix the problem. But InstallShield stopped working. I believe I got error -1607: Unable to Install InstallShield Scripting Run Time. So I went to their website and was going to install the updates and see if that worked. But the Windows Installer said that it didn't work (I'm sorry, I don't remember the exact error).
Also: some of the things in the Start Menu such as the Windows Updater and the search for files don't work (at least when selected from the Start Menu). I cannot click and drag things from the Desktop to the trash (or is it recycle bin in Windows? I'm primarily a Mac user). Whenever I click on the Programs Folder, the folder is completely empty although it shows there being x amount of files at the bottom of the window. When I try to search in that folder, then files will show up in the search and I have to access them that way or through the command prompt.
When I hadn't figured out that it was my video card that was the reason my computer wouldn't start up past a certain point, my boyfriend who is much more knowledgeable about Windows than I am, ran the computer in safe mode and went through my registry and program folder and deleted some programs that he thought might be suspicious (for the record, I think we were being overly cautious--they didn't look like spyware to me, but then, I must admit that I can't remember where they came from), and I ran PCillin and AdAware on the computer.
When I finally find the Windows 2000 disk that I have I was just going to reinstall Windows, because we're both stumped, but maybe someone can give me some insight on what I should do instead? I have a feeling there's something obvious that I'm missing. Thank you very much for your help!

I'm currently running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop (had it for about...two years), and there's been this really annoying problem for the past few months, and I've completely given up as to a solution. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to open any new windows. For example, if I'm on a website and I click on someone that's supposed to come up on a popup, it won't. But I get the regular, annoying, spam-like popups just fine. At first I thought it was because of Javascript, like my computer was eating it or something...but it doesn't work with people who insert the " target='blank' >" code either. I've looked through all of my Internet Options and computer options, and I can't seem to find my way out. Any solutions?

I am attempting to get my boyfriend's Dell desktop, running Windows ME, to get online using my AirPort Extreme base station. We have an ethernet cable running from his tower to my base station. (My base station is connected through a cable modem.)
We have no idea what settings need to be changed on his Dell to get him online.
Any ideas?

windows 98 question
Date: 02/16/05
Keywords: no keywords
Me and a friend are combining computers and are wondering if it is possible to have seperate logins to each others stuff. The computer will have 3 harddrives, 1 with the Win 98 SP2 OS on it and the other two is data that we each have. Our own programs etc...
I know on Windows 2000 Pro and all the NT based Windows it is rather easy but haven't been able to figure it out on 98. Essentially it needs to be set up so that I put my name and password I get my stuff, he puts his name and password and he gets his stuff. Guest gets nothing. I also suppose there would need to be an admin too. I'm not sure, can anybody help me?

Comcast fun

I bought the parts for a AMD Thoroughbreed PC awhile ago but I have been really slow about putting it together as I am primarily a Mac user and just wanted a computer to play Windows-only/DOS games on. I have Windows 2000 Pro installed on it. I recently tried to get it online using the ethernet adapter that came with my motherboard (SiS 900), connecting via comcast high speed internet going through a router. I have looked all over my modem but haven't been able to figure out what model it is. At any rate, I don't have the software for it. I have TCP/IP installed and have it set up to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically, which is what every site I've looked at has said to do. My computer recognizes that there is a Local Area connection, but I can't ping anything or connect to the internet at all. I know the modem and the router work just fine because we have two Macs that use them. The RJ-45 is also fine because it's the same one I'm using right now on my laptop. Any suggestions on what to do?
Please delete this if it's not appropriate for this community - I'm new to Windows and so I wasn't sure where else to post it.
Edit: I have tried ipconfig /renew which gives the error, "The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection: DHCP Server unreachable." When trying ipconfig I get: Autoconfiguration IP Address: 0.0.0.0 Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0 and nothing for the DNS Suffix and the Default Gateway...
Edit 2: Well, my father always told me that we have a router. Apparently that is not true and we have a hub (and have only paid for 2 IPs, when we needed 3). So, we're going to buy a router today and as far as I understand that should fix my problems. Thanks all.

Word questions
Date: 02/09/05
Keywords: linux
Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me with a couple of issues I'm having with Word. I'm using Word 2000, 9.0.3821 SR-1. I cannot afford to upgrade to a newer version at this time.
1) For about a year now, one of my menus has been going wonky. I've put a screen cap of what it looks like here. I don't ever use Mail Merge, but I use Word Count all the time. It started with two mail merge options showing up, then kept increasing. It's been at that many for several months now. It doesn't seem to be interfering with anything unless it's part of a wider problem that's causing crashes. I've searched online help files several times over the months but can't seem to find appropriate search terms to get me a decent result. Anyone have any idea what's doing that and how/if I should stop/fix it? I ran an installation repair and that didn't do anything.
2) I get a lot of crashes if I've opened and closed several documents within a session (say, going through my chapters and doing word counts). This inevitably messes up the "normal.dot template" and it always yells at me to replace that, and/or freezes me out of my documents until I reboot. I save frequently so it's rare that I lose much data, but it's a real hassle to constantly have to reboot. I found a tutorial about six months ago about a normal.dot issue and ran the installation repair for that, and that fixed it for awhile, but now it's back. I do have a different normal.dot from the standard, as I prefer to work in Arial 10 as opposed to TimesNR 12.
3) Referring to the normal.dot above, even though I've set that to be Arial 10, my documents frequently want to lapse into TNR 12. Have I set the normal.dot wrong?
4) This last issue is something I've hunted for solutions for forever and never found. The scroll speed is WAY TOO FAST. If I want to highlight half of a page, and scroll the mouse up or down to do that, it jumps multiple pages at a time. I need to do this frequently to move blocks of text around, find out the word count of one new block, etc. It's a major pain in the butt to try to adjust a hair's breath of movement to just capture what I want. Is there a way to slow down the scroll speed in just Word? I am aware that I can set mouse speeds for the whole computer, but it's perfectly fine in everything except Word.
Thanks to anyone who can provide advice. I've been reluctant to ask these questions on my own LJ or in some other groups because whenever I do all I get is a lecture about why I should buy a Mac or port to Linux or some other completely unhelpful, rude response along those lines.

Hey there, couple of questions, hoping someone can help me out.
I downloaded Ashlee Simpson, Newlyweds and the Osbournes from tv-swarm.com, and when I try and play them on one of my computers, and the audio is fine but the video visual seems to play in slow motion, I can't figure out why! I have the same codec as I do on my laptop and they play fine on my laptop, so I don't know whats wrong with it. I'm pretty computer-dim so the only thing I could think of was seeing if the video accelartion thing might have anything to do with it but it didn't. Tried downloading them from other sites and playing video's that have worked fine before and nothings playing right :-\
My brother thinks he'll have to re-install windows for me but I hate doing that, and if I do is there any way I can save my explorer "favourite" pages?

it seems so easy but we're having a lot of problems limiting access. like we want people to be able to create files and modify but not delete and blah blah blah.
if we disable the right to delete, we end up with a ton of temp files.)
