1. Recent Mozilla convert

    Date: 03/20/05     Keywords: yahoo

    (x-posted to '[info]'firefoxusers)

I am still unfamiliar with a lot of Mozilla Firefox's features, but was wondering a few things.

First off, for long-time users, or those at least who have been using longer than me: what is different about Firefox than, say, Mozilla Suite, or Netscape? What makes it your favorite, and what makes it stand out above all the others? I have Netscape's latest build, but not Suite. So far the only differences I can tell are probably in the themes and extensions, and the download manager is sooooo fast and easy to use. Those things are what make Firefox my favorite, and I can't wait to work even more with it. However, I have not tried really working with Netscape or even installing Suite.

Secondly: I cannot play launch (yahoo music) even though I downloaded what it said to. I know that Mozilla and yahoo have had some issues, but I did not know exactly what they were. Is there a way around this, or have I perhaps just done something wrong?

  2. Page tabs question

    Date: 03/19/05     Keywords: browser

I'm seriously considering switching to Firefox from Opera, which I've used for the last 6 years.

Since I normally have a dozen+ pages open in my browser, it's important to keep the desktop tidy. I love the way Opera lets you place all your page tabs on the side of your screen. You know what I mean?
There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that in Firefox. Am I missing something obvious?

    Thank you.

  3. my mail! vaporised!

    Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: no keywords

My pc crashed TWICE, one after the other, and now my Thunderbird has no record of anything - no mail, inboxes, etc. And I failed to backup anything (had been meaning to last week...). Is there someway I can recover the data (settings, etc.)? I tried using System Restore but that didn't do anything.

    Machine OS: Win XP
    Thunderbird 1.0

Thank you in advance for any replies.

  4. Yahoo Delivers! POP access?

    Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: yahoo

I've been googling and i can't find a straight answer.

I would like to use Yahoo on my T-bird. I know Yahoo used to have POP3 access. Then they required YahooDelivers!. Do they still let you in if yousign up for YD!? or is it truly a pay only feature now.

If I can't do it. I'll have to use something like YahooPOPs? i think it's called. I've familiar with programs that will let me access my yahoo accnt on POP but what about sending mail. What kind of options am I looking at for SMTP servers? Are there free ones out there I could use ?

  5. Little Annoying Problem with bookmarks

    Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: web

I've noticed that lately in Firefox (version 1.0), a couple of my bookmarks' icons are wrong. This has happened once at home and once at work. I'm running Windows XP at both and have cleared my cache and everything, but I can't get them to change.

Here's what happened: One of my bookmarks is Snopes.com. They have a little icon for the bookmark that is a black box with UL (for urban legends). I also have The Boondocks cartoon bookmarked. For a long time, the Boondocks icon was just the general sheet like most of them are. Then all of a sudden it started using the UL from Snopes as its icon. Why did it do this? And how do I make it stop?

I have a similar problem with two different web pages at my work computer, too. I have installed Firefox 1.0.1 at home, hoping it would fix the problem, but it hasn't.

Obviously this isn't anything that's a major problem, but it is annoying, and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem before and how they fixed it. (I'm assuming deleting the bookmark and re-marking it would fix it, but that doesn't address the real problem - whatever it may be that's making them take on the wrong icon in the first place.)

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Moving the Firefox user data ?

    Date: 03/15/05     Keywords: spyware

Got into a bit of a silly situation at with the client I'm working with. I installed Firefox on my workstation since they apparently do nothing with their IE setup to prevent spyware and stuff.

But right away I got a warning that I was now exceeding my storage limit for my user profile.

It turns out that they somehow backup the data in my user directory on NT in \winnt\profiles\myuserid, and because of that they've set a limit that it must not exceed 10 mb... weird corporate rule, but being a consultant mine is not to reason why in this case :-)

So, is there any way to change where Firefox looks for all the stuff like application data? I tried to look at the settings, but couldn't find any. I just want to point it somewhere else on the disk - I don't care if I should loose my setup or bookmarks - I'm only at this client for a number of months, I just want a less annoying browsing experience :-)

  7. Problem after minimization?

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: no keywords

I've got a fairly annoying problem with Firefox. Occasionally when I minimize it and then un-minimize it (usually after long periods of time being minimized, but also happens after only a minute or so sometimes) my Bookmarks Toolbar will get all minimized to the left side of the screen. It isn't because I have too many in there either, they only fill up about 2/3 of the screen when they're not minimized. Does anyone know what the problem is?

  8. Trouble Loading Firefox

    Date: 03/13/05     Keywords: spyware

I've been using Firefox for a while now without any trouble. Then last night I go to open it up and I get an error.

I have no trouble opening IE (which I am now begrudgingly using), but I still can't open Firefox even after running Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware. However, on both programs it gets stuck at a certain file. Ad-Aware freezes up and won't go past it and Spyware Doctor stops scanning at that point. However, with Spyware Doctor I was able to delete all of the infected files up until that point. I've tried to manually delete the file that Ad-Aware got hung up on, but I can't because it's "in use" even after closing out of every running program in Windows. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  9. Visted/Unvisted Links Color Problems!

    Date: 03/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

Just joined. I love Mozilla, but for whatever reason, after I visit links, they stay the same color as unvisited links. Even if I go into Tools -> Options -> General -> Fonts & Colors -> Link Colors -> Visited Links and change colors, the visited links always stay the same. Is there any way to fix this? My apologies if this question has already been asked. Thanks in advance!

  10. Making Thunderbird the Default

    Date: 03/11/05     Keywords: web

I swear I looked up and down this journal to find an answer to my question, but I could not find it at all, so I'm really really really sorry if this has been answered somewhere else.

My question is: How can I configure Thunderbird to be my default mail program?

I am running OS X and every time I click on a mailto: link, the stupid Mail program that comes with OS X pops up, not Thunderbird. I went to the Mozilla website and read some freaky deaky thing about how I have to click on Tools > Options.... But here's the funny thing.... There IS no Options selection. I found Account Settings under Tools and there wasn't anything there about making Thunderbird my default mail program.

    Can anyone help, please? :)

  13. Thunderbird extensions problem

    Date: 03/10/05     Keywords: php, html

A friend of mine tried installing extensions on Thunderbird and told me he couldn't. Naturally, I thought he wasn't following the directions, so I was going to walk him through.

The directions - on the official extensions site for Thunderbird - say this:

Extension Install Instructions for Thunderbird Users:
    (1) Right-Click the link above and choose "Save Link As..." to Download and save the file to your hard disk.
    (2) In Mozilla Thunderbird, open the extension manager (Tools Menu/Extensions)
    (3) Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click "OK"

However, when right clicking as directed, and choosing "Save Link As...", also as directed, it tries to download and save 'install.php.html', and not the extension! What's the proper method, and why the hell do they have instructions that don't work on the official site?

  14. Moving Icons Don't Move Anymore

    Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

Ello all. This happened all of a sudden. Suddenly, icons that move, like mine, no longer move. It's frozen. I've noticed that my friends' icons don't move, either. I tryed clearing my cache, but that didn't work. I also tried clearing my cookies. Anyone know how I can make icons move again? I use Mozilla Firefox on Windows XP Home Edition. All help is appreciated.

  15. Kojo Nnamdi Show publicitiy

Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: php, browser, security, web

I know this isn't totally an advocacy group, but I think some of you might enjoy seeing the publicity that moz and firefox are getting. The Kojo Nnamdi show, on WAMU-FM
(Howard University PBS radio) had a show on browsers today, and what I was able to catch of it sounded pretty positive to firefox. For a while they'll have a stream up on their web site: (updated edit: seems they're up for quite a while, the archive is back to 2003).

    http://www.wamu.org/programs/kn/index.php

The Kojo Nnamdi show is always pretty interesting. Glad I found out about it. Too bad it wasn't in time for the show to post here so folks could call in or email. :( It aired Tuesday at 12.06 hours Eastern US time. On air were guests columnist Mark Kelner from the Washington Times (bleh ..to the paper not the columnist) and Alan Paller, research director of The Sans Institue (computer security).

And if folks really don't want these kinds of posts, let me know. :)

  16. I'm New! Welcome Me!

    Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: browser

I just got the whole Firefox/Mozilla thang when I heard that they have tabbed windows now. Whoop!

Anywho, here is my problem. My fiancee replied to a post while I was on LJ and just clicked to post under his name without signing out. No big deal, except now whenever I try to comment it keeps his name in the field and automatically tries to post it like that, instead of posting as the logged in user. What gives?

I'm also a GMail user and when I click "Reply at page" to post a comment it opens an entirely new window, even though I have it set in the options to open links in a new tab in the most recent window.

    Any ideas?

I hope I'm not being repetitive, I'm going to scroll through + read now...

(This is all new to me, I've been using Avant Browser for roughly two years now, I loved the tabbed windows!)

    Thanks!
    Nicole

  20. Tab navigation problem

    Date: 03/04/05     Keywords: browser

I'm having an odd problem navigating tabs in Firefox. I've been using 1.0 for sometime now, but in the past month or so I've found that when using Ctrl-PageUp and Ctrl-Pagedown to step through the tabs, for some reason it moves two at a time. So I can only see every other tab.

it's really quite annoying. I can't find any reason for it. No settings regarding it, and I already tried disabling the Tab Browser Preferences extension. Any suggestions?
