"Profile In Use" & missing bookmarks problem! someone please help!
Date: 04/19/05
Keywords: no keywords
the other day i was using mozilla and was in the middle of reading something when it just shut down on me.
i went to re-start it but the 'Choose User Profile' window popped up. (something i had never seen before, nor knew about);
so i clicked 'Start Firefox' but then i got an error message saying, 'Profile In Use' (how? i didn't have mozilla running?!?)
so i just made a new profile and it worked.. except all of my bookmarks were gone.
i've looked and looked but couldn't find any information that would help me with these problems.
if anyone knows of a solution to this "profile in use" thing, or if you know of a way for me to get my bookmarks from the default profile to this new one, *(importing my IE bookmarks won't help, because the ones i lost are ones that i saved to mozilla.)* then i'd greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Mozilla thunderbird 1.0

::Annoyance::
I am running Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 on a windows XP SP2 comptuer. I love Thunderbird however I have only one complaint. My complaint is that the mail which I loaded in my inbox the first time I ran thunderbird is always in my inbox and is always marked unread. I cannot delete it, move it to a folder or anything. THe messages are not on my pop server so I do not know why they keep loading and it is making me nuts. What file do I edit to fix this problem? Would this problem have anything to do with the fact I at one time lost my mail and I had to force my email folders back into Thunderbird? Here is the post in question
Thank you

Open source and Firefox
Date: 04/19/05
Keywords: software, linux, microsoft
A couple articles I've come across today that I thought I might share in case people missed them.
I found both on Slashdot, not surprisingly.
The first is The Pros And Cons Of Firefox, by Fred Langa on InformationWeek. Although he makes some good points for either side of the debate, he does miss on key area. There may be as many bugs in Mozilla software as in Microsoft, the major difference is what is likely to happen when someone finds this vulnerability. I think Open Source/Linux supporters are more likely to create a patch and pass it on quickly.
The difference is that the people who know how to read and write the code for Linux operating systems are part of the open source community and there are likely far more of them than the ones who would take advantage of the bug for profit or whatever.
Not the same with Microsoft. Some people might alert them, but I think the ones looking for the vulnerabilities are the ones wanting to exploit them. Microsoft's code is not open source as everyone knows, so there is no intelligent user base checking the code to ferrett out these bugs and fix them quickly.
The second article was all about users. The full article is in the Boston Globe, but I only read the summary on Slashdot.

Trouble converting to F

Mac X.2.8, trying to convert from IE 5.5 to FoxFire 1.0.2 and Entourage (Office 2004) to Thunderbird. I'm on a 867 mhz G4 Powerbook. This is pre-Panther.
In moving from IE to Foxfire, we can't find the favorites in IE or import them to FoxFire.
In moving from Entourage to Thunderbird, we can't find the address file to download it to Thunderbird, and we can't download the saved mail either.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Firefox Pros and Cons
Date: 04/15/05
Keywords: software, browser, css, security, microsoft, google
I'm not really looking for an answer in this post, mostly just the community's thoughts.
The high school that I attend has internet access, like most other high schools now a days, but our computer tech seems to think that Internet Explorer is the browser of choice and won't even consider looking at anything else. He's dependant on Microsoft and can't really think outside of the box. Anyways, he told me that for him to do anything, the district would have to put Firefox (the browser that I'm pushing) on the "aproved software list". I can come up with several key "pros" that Firefox has over IE, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me some that I'm overlooking. Here's what I have:
- Pop-up blocking
- Correct CSS rendering
- Tabbed Browsing
- Increased stability (has only crashed once on me)
- Increased security (in respect to its lack of security holes that have plagued IE since forever)
- Easy access to various search engines
- Constantly updated to fix security holes
- Completely free
If I have any misinformation, I was just led to believe it from whatever source, so sorry about that. I tried mozilla.org for any other differences but couldn't come up with any.
Also, right before I posted this, I thought I should search google just one last time to pick up anything I might have left off. This site sounds very persuasive. Maybe I should send most of this article or a link to it to the District instead?

TB 1.02 and custom headers on newsgroups
Date: 04/03/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hello!
I just started using Thunderbird 1.02 to read mail/news with, and am interested in adding some custom headers to each newsgroup post. The headers will be of the legitimate, unforged variety. I couldn't seem to find anywhere to add custom headers, however. Does this capability exist?
Thanks, in advance!

Camino Question
Date: 03/31/05
Keywords: browser
So since the March 29th nightly build of Camino it's really weird. You know a lot of site require IE 6.0 (or whatever it is M$ is hocking these days), or Safari. However, most will recognize Camino. And you can even add some script via Mozilla's site to "lie" to sites and make them think it's IE (which I did a week or two ago actually, plus a couple of other things). Musicmatch, gay.com are a couple of sites that require this.
Since the March 29th nightly build I can't load any site like that. Most sites I have no problem with, but a few flat out don't recognize the browser. Any thoughts?

Firefox extensions I use - and other info
Date: 03/30/05
Keywords: browser, css, html, xml, java, web
Since Mozilla Suite is no longer being developed, and Firefox is where everything is going, I decided it was time for me to make the jump. In the process I picked up a number of extensions and thought I'd document them in one place.
AniDisable - control animated gifs
Checky - links to validation services for XHTML, XML, CSS, etc.
ChromEdit - profile editor
ColorZilla - allows you to pick up a color from any element in the browser
Disable Targets For Downloads - prevents empty windows/tabs when you click a binary link
EditCSS - make realtime tweaks to a pages CSS
FoxyTunes - control your media player (iTunes, WinAmp, etc) from the browser chrome
Html Validator (based on Tidy) - validate HTML right in the browser, locally
I must not fear! - OK, so this just adds the line from Dune to the Tools menu. I like it. ;-)
ieview - open the current page in ie, useful for development testing
Image Zoom - pretty much what it sounds like
JavaScript Debugger - what it says
Linkification - makes plaintext URLs links
Linky - adds options for handling links
Longdesc - let's you view the longdesc attribute on images
miniT (drag+indicator) - drag tabs to reorder
Preferential - advanced preferences editor
Tabbrowser Preferences - provides a UI for editing hidden tab preferences
TinyUrl Creator - easily create a TinyURL from the current page
User Agent Switcher - lets you mimic other user agents
View Cookies - adds a tab to Page Info showing the cookies set by the page
Web Developer - adds a toolbar with web development tools
Anyone want to suggest something I should check out that I missed?
I also find this most useful - there are UIs in Firefox that aren't accessible. The chrome is there from the Suite, but the 'simplified' UI of FF has removed the links to the sub-elements: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dev_:_FireFox_Chrome_URLs
For example: chrome://pippki/content/pref-ssl.xul - which also brings you here: chrome://pippki/content/pref-ciphers.xul - I like to disable weak ciphers.

Saved Passwords
Date: 03/28/05
Keywords: no keywords
I posted this question to firefoxusers yesterday, but haven't gotten too many responses, so I decided I'll cross-post here as well.
I have a question. Is there a way to have Firefox (v1.0.2) save a password if you tell it to, but not pop up that box that says "Remember this password? [yes] [never for this site] [no]" every time you type in a password for a new site? It doesn't look like you can manually tell Firefox to remember the password for a specific site without having the "Remember Passwords" box checked in the preferences. And having that box checked means you'll be prompted to save passwords at new sites.
I just want to save my password on one specific site, but not be bothered with the prompts all the time. Is this possible?
Thanks! :)

How in the world do you set Firefox up to display my own image on the toolbars? I followed this exactly, but it isn't working. The image file is in the same place as the userChrome.css file as well, but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I had it set up ages ago, but I can't seem to remember how I did it.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm ready to chuck this thing out the window.

Trojaner found --> Emails gone...
Date: 03/24/05
Keywords: virus
Hi!
My father uses Mozilla Thunderbild 1.0. He was going to read E-Mails today, he logged in, but after a downloading the E-Mails the Anti-Virus (AntiVir Personal 6, updated today) said a trojaner has been found (can't remember which it was). After clicking on OK (the affected file would be deleted) and after restarting Thunderbird, all E-Mails in the Incoming-folder were gone! Okay, my father said they weren't that important.
But what could happened with them? Can they be restored? I guess there was a Trojaner in one of the E-Mails.
I tried to install the latest version 1.0.2, but there isn't a german version yet (my father doesn't know english).

Problems with preferences
Date: 03/23/05
Keywords: no keywords
Evening all !
Today I installed drivers/program for my new Logitech LX700 Mouse/Keyboard Duo. I had problems with my forward/back buttons, but have solved that (selecting "Generic Function" in the SetPoint program), but have found a very strange problem: I can't access my preferences in Mozilla (1.7.6, running on XPPro)! I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice, and nothing's happening. I have a slight second when I click it, the cursor changes to the little hourglass+arrow, but besides that, nothing. I have Firefox installed as well, and I can access preferences in there. I've tried accessing it through Mail&Newsgroups, no dice. Can access the Mail Account settings though!
I only mention the new keyboard+mouse because that's the only thing that's changed lately. Any one else had this problem?

Thanks so much

for all the info and input you all gave me on my last post. I am having so much fun with themes and extensions...this is like a whole new world for me!
I do have another question: does anyone know if there are ever plans for a build that will allow for things like certain text effects and custom scrollbars to be seen, like in IE? Going without those features is a small price to pay for a better and safer browser, but it would still be nice.
I still have not had a chance to look at the links you all suggested in regards to my launch problem, but I will as soon as I have a decent chunk of time on my hands to sit down here and play on my computer.
Thanks again!

JavaScript Mouse Position Mozilla Firefox
Date: 03/22/05
Keywords: java, google
I seem to be having trouble finding a working answer on any of the pages I've found using google. Let's say I've got a javascript function bob(). when the is clicked, I want the function bob() to alert the current x and y of the mouse. It works on IE as alert(event.x) and alert(event.y), but it doesn't work in Mozilla Firefox as any of the functions that I've been given. For example, e.clientX or e.pageX do nothing for me. What's the javascript code to return the mouse positions in Firefox?
