    Date: 06/17/08     Keywords: no keywords

We want to see how many people you can influence to download Opera 9.5. Create an event, group, page, profile, etc - basically anything that will allow you to gather a group of people - on your favorite social network to help promote Opera 9.5.

Once you have created an event, start promoting it. The three contestants (event creators) with the most members in their groups at the end of this contest on July 7 will receive one of three great prizes: an XO OLPC (the famous $100 laptop), Nintendo Wii, or a mobile phone (perfect for Opera Mini).

  5. Problems with Yahoo login and/or Yahoo groups?

    Date: 05/29/08     Keywords: yahoo

Somehow or another, I got signed out of Yahoo Groups, and now, I can't sign in because I can't get past the sign-in page. I sign in with my username and password, and get taken right back to the sign-in page. I use Proxomitron, but it happens whether or not proxy servers are enabled. What's even odder is that it happened when I tried to switch to View All from my main Groups page.

I can still use mail and "My Yahoo", and I can sign in to groups with Firefox, so it's not a problem with my username or password.

Anyone else seeing anything like this?

  6. Opera as non-SSL e-mail client

Date: 01/18/08     Keywords: browser, database, web, yahoo

Ever since I first installed Opera I've used it as my default e-mail client as well as my default browser, but recently I had to switch ISPs to (ick) AT&T Yahoo, and their e-mail service requires e-mail clients to be SSL compliant, while Opera uses TLS instead (oh, the curse of being ahead of the curve!) Ideally, there'd be a way I could continue to use Opera as my e-mail client, but while I've heard that TLS can transform itself into SSL3 if necessary, I'm utterly non-geek and would have no idea how to make it do this.

I could use SSL-compliant Mozilla Thunderbird, but, while it's not the abomination Outlook Express is, I've tried it before and found it a bit clunky, and annoying to configure, so I would only use it as a last resort.

Another alternative I've found would be to try an e-mail client called Courier which, while not SSL compliant itself, can be configured to work with an open source program called Stunnel which, as I understand it (meaning very, very dimly), would punk Yahoo's POP and SMTP servers and make them think I was using an SSL compliant e-mail client. I do like the description Courier gives of itself, but I've not yet tried it so I don't know if I'd really find it usable.

Why, you may be asking, would I not simply use Stunnel with Opera directly instead of going through Courier? Well, I would, but I can't find anything on Opera's website (or on Stunnel's website) saying that Opera is compatible with Stunnel... but there's a nice little section of the Opera database that tells how to configure Opera to work with Courier, and a nice (though not so little) section on Courier's website that tells how to configure Courier for use with Stunnel. In other words, if I run as fast as I can I might be able to stay somewhere in the vicinity of the same place.

Anyway, what I'd like to know is:

    1) Has anybody ever used Stunnel (or maybe something like it) with Opera and, if so, did disaster ensue?
    2) Has anybody ever used Courier, with or without Opera and, if so, is Courier as good as it looks from its self-description?
    3) Has anybody got a suggestion for any other alternatives, so I don't end up having to use Thudderbird?

  8. No Flash with Opera 9.23 on Fedora FC7

    Date: 12/17/07     Keywords: linux

I'm not sure whether it was when I upgraded to Opera 9.23 (from 9.something) or when I updated the Flash plugin (now on flash-plugin.i386 0:9.0.115.0-release), but I can't see any Flash content.

I've followed the Opera instructions, checked the Flash test page, and I still can't see video on YouTube or more importantly HomestarRunner!

I found some discussions which strongly suggested using the gnash plugin instead of Flash but that's no better.

Any suggestions? (Those sites are fine with Firefox or Flock but I want to continue using Opera if I can.)

[Environment recap: Opera 9.23 with Flash plugin 9.0.115 or Gnash plugin 8.1-5 running on Fedora Core 7.]

  10. Avoiding "in-text" link advertisements

    Date: 09/14/07     Keywords: java, seo

I don't think this has been brought up in this particular little Opera community yet (after a cursory search), but it wouldn't hurt for me to reiterate the tip.

Most of you are familiar with those in-text link advertisements where words and phrases in an article or blog entry are underlined; when you mouseover these links, a javascript window pops up to flash an advertisement at you.

I find it far more annoying than banner ads. You can easily disable this behavior in Opera (no addons necessary!). The main "service" of these ads is IntelliTXT.

    In Opera 9:

    Preferences >
    Advanced >
    Content > [Blocked content...] >
Click the [Add...] button on the new dialog, then enter

    http://*.intellitxt.com/*
    in the bottom pane.
Hit Enter, then [Close] this window, and [Okay] the main Preferences dialog.

Voila. No more of these content link ads from this service on any page that you visit.

  11. Journal Images not showing up in Opera

    Date: 07/17/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm normally a Firefox user but I decided to try Opera out and so far I'm pretty pleased. However I'm having a problem with images in my journal. My header and background show up but images in my posts are not showing up consistently. Some images in my sidebar are also not showing up. This doesn't happen with either Firefox or IE.

I noticed a similar post in June and someone recommended increasing the frequency with which Opera checks images. I did so and there's still no difference.

    Can anyone help?

    Date: 06/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

Is it possible in Opera to search for given phrase in a feed I am subscribed to?

    Date: 06/07/07     Keywords: no keywords

A strange thing happening: when I open LJ via Opera, some pictures appear instead of other ones, e.g. users appear with some others' userpics, icons change places, a photograph from one's posting appears as some other's userpic. Could anyone explain this and how could I deal with it? Thank you.

  17. New Opera Release, 9.20 Ready for Download (only slightly late)

    Date: 04/12/07     Keywords: no keywords

Just another step closer to the next major version change. This one offeres more for developers than previous versions, but they've also added something new and highly user friendly.

    It's called Seed Dial:

Honestly it's become quite useful. Before this I had the 'Personal Bar' turned on, and it would have various sites I would go to on a regular basis. This is much better. You get a mini-preview that actually gets updated so you can see when your site is updated and thus saving time not going to sites you don't need to visit.

There has been other updates, bug fixes and stability issues taken care of (changelog). I'd highly suggest that people upgrade from their older verisions of Opera. If it's your first time, make sure you check out some of the video tutorials so you can take full advantage of Opera's integrated features.

  19. .JPG vs .JPF - Image formats compared.

    Date: 03/10/07     Keywords: no keywords

Allow me a moment to nerd out for a second to introduce (most of) you to the next generation of the jpeg format; JPF (a.k.a. JP2, JPEG2000, etc.) A picture is worth a thousand words, so lets start with that.

    A side-by-side comparison of JPEG & JPF.

    Click for larger image. (70KB)

Both files are around 160KB, we have JPEG on the left and JPF on the right. JPF clearly has the advantage here, able to make use of every byte much more efficently than the older JPG format. Also JPF has more saving options like "lossless", a quality range from 100 to 0, or just pick your kilobyte size by typing it in & JPF will do the rest.

Before you run off and convert your entire JPG collection to JPF, there are a few things you should know...
1.) JPF requires a high quality, lossless source (like TIFF, BMP, RAW, PNG, etc) to produce a high quality compressed image.
2.) If you recompress a lossy image (like JPG, GIF, ART, etc) in JPF you will see no quality increase.
3.) JPF is not widely accepted yet. A few image viewers can read the format, but that's about it.
4.) The quality range has changed considerably from JPG to JPF. An 80 quality JPG is about a 25 quality JPF.
5.) JPF is much higher quality and generally wants to be much larger than JPG files, though this is easily controlled.

What do you think? Any questions?

  20. Google Desktop

    Date: 02/10/07     Keywords: browser, google

Well, I tried their latest version. They still don't support Opera, sadly. Seeing how that Opera is my main/only browser, I uninstalled Google Desktop. Looks like it would have lots of nifty things, but none of which would be required. Just kind of meshes your computer with the internet. Puts a few things at your fingertips like google mail, various news sites and things of that nature. It seemed a bit bogged down, maybe too much going on at once? I got a pretty power system, so I'm just not sure if that is the case.

Why dosn't Google support Opera yet? =/
