1. Not Opera related, but quite useful...

    Date: 01/15/07     Keywords: no keywords

I stumbled on to this about a week ago and gave it a shot. The company is called IObit (iobit.com), and they seem sort of new, but so far they seem to have some great products. :)

(•) Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal is the first one I tried. This thing has the same set of tools as Norton's Systemutilities package but runs faster and takes up less resources.

It's very easy to use and quite comprehensive and I noticed a difference after just one use. It's free, so give it a shot!

After seeing that program was worthwhile, I decided to try out their disk defragging program, called (•) SmartDefrag. I turned it on last night and did a manual defrag before I went to sleep, and again a noticable difference.

Not only is this thing quite fast, it also has one of those nifty defrag-as-you-go type options. When your computer is idle it will defrag your hard drives with out any intervention from a human. :) Also you can schedual more defrags if you like very easily too. (I got mine to start at 3:00am on sunday, because I know I'm asleep then) Again, this is also free, so give it a shot!

Lemme know what you guys think, I'm just curious if anyone else thinks these are good products. :)

  2. Opera = virus or spyware?

Date: 01/04/07     Keywords: html, virus, spyware, google

If I do a Google search by typing g whatever in the Opera address bar, I'm now getting a 403 Forbidden response, with an apology page:

    We're sorry...

... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.
Then there's a captcha - "To continue searching, please type the characters you see below:"

I'm reasonably sure that the problem isn't a virus or spyware, but Google being suspicious of the Opera searches, so... Yuk!

Is this happening to anyone else?

Update: This seems to be related to where Google sees your request originating, and not anything to do with Opera. Apologies. It seems that Google has been doing this for quite a while. More info: http://www.spy.org.uk/spyblog/2005/06/stupid_google_virusspyware_cap.html

  3. Comments on 9.10

    Date: 01/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

Since 9.10 has been out for a few weeks, I'm wondering if anyone has any comments on it, good, bad, or indifferent. Is there any pressing reason to upgrade from 9.02, or any reason not to upgrade just yet? Is there anything I should watch out for if I do upgrade?

  4. Switching from Win to Mac

Has anyone switched from Windows to Mac version of Opera? Is it possible to transfer all settings (especially Wand-saved passwords)?
    Thanks

Some nice web developer tools here: http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-developer-tools/

The article suggests you can drag the links to a toolbar, but that doesn't seem to work: click instead.

  7. Cross-browser bookmark sync tool?

    Date: 11/11/06     Keywords: browser, linux

Is there such a thing as a tool for synchronising my bookmarks between browsers and operating systems? I use Opera/Linux at home but Firefox/WinXP at work, and occassionally IE/Win2k (or XP) if I'm away from my PCs and have no other option.

  8. In-line find

    Date: 10/28/06     Keywords: google

I like the in-line find feature in Opera: when I press Ctrl+F, instead of a find dialog popping up, the focus jumps to the find box in the address bar that defaults to Google search, and it switches to find-in-page mode.

At one time there was a menu option for selecting this behaviour, then it was a setting in preferences, but since 9.0 I can't find it at all. I've managed to set it in the preferences file (e.g. opera6.ini or it's Mac equivalent), but surely there's an easier way to set this?

  10. why why why?

    Date: 09/17/06     Keywords: no keywords

Why the hell does this keep happening to me? Sometimes when i right click, opera will just freeze. i have to keep restarting it. it's annoying. 'cause i keep tabs open that are graphics heavy, and i hate loading it each time.

this shouldn't be happening. any idea why it is? thx.

  11. Page crashes Opera

    Date: 09/17/06     Keywords: html

I'm using Opera 9.01 under WinXP. The page below inevitably causes Opera to crash. There's no error message. In fact, the first time it happened, I thought I'd accidentally closed Opera.

    http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/television/index.html

Does it happen to anyone else? It sometimes happens when I click on the 'Find' button on the left hand side of the page. At other times, it crashes Opera before the page is even done loading.

  12. opera hack?

    Date: 09/08/06     Keywords: java

Is there some way to hack javascript or stylesheets or anything that will stop these stupid mouse-over ads?

Stupid mouse-over ad example. These are extremely irritating.

  13. Thread Unfolder UserJS

    Date: 08/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

'[info]'ilishin wrote the original Firefox GM Thread Unfolder script. Since the script is GPL'd I modified a few lines of it to make it work with Opera. AFAIK, it will only work with Opera 9 due to version 8 not supporting XPath very well (although I'd like to be proved wrong).

Known bug: if you quickly hit several "Unfold" links, you probably won't get ANY threads expanded. So, one at a time, kids. ;)
This is a problem with the FF version as well.

  15. Being notified a page is fully downloaded

    Date: 08/19/06     Keywords: web

Normally, if a page starts loading and you switch to another tab, and the first page is fully downloaded, that tab's letters will turn blue.

However, since upgrading to Opera 9, I've been encountering an issue where the tab will turn blue, but the page isn't fully downloaded yet. I switch back to another window, then it'll turn blue once more, and it's still not downloaded.

When I look at such a page without switching over, I'll initially get the small bar at the bottom that describes the transfer (KB/s, etc...) but then that will go away, and I'll see the pics slowly show up.

It happens when I bring up my LJ Friends page, for instance. It's also very frequent on gallery web sites with lots of thumbnails. There are even occasions where it will fully download such a page, but it'll never notify me.

  16. 9.01 Help

    Date: 08/19/06     Keywords: browser

I get a lot of emails with links to sites that I am always logged in for (LJ and various forums). When I click on these links, I am not logged in on the new tab that opens the page (meaning I can't read protected pages that I am linked to, without first logging in). I want to be able to click on the links and be automatically logged in, as if I'd typed the address into the addy bar.

For the first week I had 9.01, it functioned as I want it to. Today, it stopped leaving me logged in. I can get around it by copying the link address and opening a new tab manually, but that isn't ideal.

I'm not willing to switch permanently to v9 unless I can resolve this, because it works in my old version of Opera from early 2004. And that's a long time to go without upgrading browsers.

  17. Opera Mini 2

    Date: 07/25/06     Keywords: browser, java

I see that Opera Mini 2.0 is out now and it's looking very slick. Page Transition Animations, keyboard shortcuts (*1 to go to your first bookmark etc), custom searches on the home page and full screen mode (**).

Opera's definitely looking very slick and totally blows away the idea that Java's slow.

  18. Copy rich-text in Opera 9

    Date: 07/10/06     Keywords: web

    Copy rich-text in Opera 9 @ My.Opera.Com (en)
Исследование Оперного (9) копирования форматированного текста @ Operafan.Net (ru)
I made some tests finding out why Opera's copy-paste doesn't transfer rich text and ended up writing program that resolves this problem to some extent.

Here you are:operaRTE.exe (program). Open some RTE-field in Opera (TinyMCE, for instance), copy rich-text and run this program (it won't show up on your monitor, it just makes some internal stuff and quits). Then you can paste copied rich-text to Word (OpenOffice's Write) documents, IE's or Firefox's RTE-fields. And you can copy some rich-text in Word/Write, IE or Firefox, run program, and paste it in Opera.

You can also make RTE-field from usual web-page using button:Design Mode, and copy page's contents with rich-formatting. © profiT

  20. Blingo & search.ini

    Date: 07/01/06     Keywords: ebay

I didn't like Opera 9, the error console etc, and am back to using 8.54. I didn't back up my search.ini file after having added Blingo, and now I can't seem to get it edited right. Anyone know what's wrong with this? After replacing eBay search with this, nothing changes in Opera or preferences. I want to make Blingo the default search on the toolbar.
