Best Windows Freeware?

I'm selling a bunch of used windows machines, and want to put a decent software load on them, at a minimum so that I am not helping to increase the number of zombies out there. The machines will have XP Pro on them.
Here is what I have so far:
Mozilla suite (Firefox, Thunderbird)
winamp
irfanview
what for anti virus, spyware, etc?
Open Office
Anything else?
Games?
Machines are pokey (266mhz PII), 10+GB disk, but have plenty of ram - 384MB.

New VS.Net file extensions
Date: 04/06/06
(C Sharp) Keywords: software, asp, sql, microsoft, google
Hi,
I'm kind of new here and wasn't sure of where to post this since it pertains to Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 itself and neither C# not ASP.Net
The project I'm working on requires me to work a lot on.pc and .pkg files (ProC and PL/SQL packages)
Now Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 recognizes neither and I spent a long time on google trying to find out how to make it treat these files like C and SQL files respectively - basically do the necessary colorization - but with no result.
I finally found the solution after looking around in my machine's registry.
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1\Languages\File Extensions\
That's where you need to add an extra key in the registry if you need your VS to recognize new file types.
Use the value from the existing file type whose formatting you want the new file type to have.
-
Works beautifully!
Just thought I'd post it here in case anyone else finds it useful. Posted to both aspdotnet and csharp. Do let me know if this is against community rules and I'll take it off.

Sending HTML e-mail from Lotus Notes
Date: 04/07/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: software, html, spam
This is a really specific question, so I know there's probably a slim chance, but I'm hoping someone here has had experience with trying to send html e-mail from Lotus Notes.
The plan was to put together and html e-mail and save it as "Stationery" (Note's version of a Template) for our sales reps to use to personally send out to individual contacts (rather than blasting SPAM). I didn't look into sending HTML e-mail through Notes (the system our company is all on) until after I put together the design. Now, after researching for a quarter of my workday yesterday, I come up blank. From what I gather, it's not possible to send HTML e-mail through Notes until version 6 (we're on 5), and even then, it requires some major scripting (not my forte, and not ideal for sales reps either!).
Can anyone confirm that it is just not possible, or should I keep researching? Is there third party software that we could use with Notes to do this? And would it break the bank to get it for multiple users (all of our sales reps)?
If the HTML is a no go:
Has anyone had any success using the Table and Import Image features to design e-mail with embedded images, and do e-mail clients outside of Notes handle these e-mails, or do they just break them up into a bunch of attachments?

Storing quantities with units
Date: 04/09/06
(C Sharp) Keywords: software
I am writing inventory software for a company that uses a lot of chemicals, with varying units for both the chemicals, and other things such as purity. Is there a better\more clever way to store the units of measure for such things than having something like an Amount column and an Amount_units column?
Also, instead of coming in g,, sometimes things come in packs or sets of (for example) 500 g (i.e., inventory would show 3 x 500g in human readable form.) Currently, I have it set up such that there is an amount column, which in this case would store the three, and a "quant" column (reflected that the item is quantized) that would store the 500. Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks, humans..

Internet radio
Date: 04/11/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: software
So I have a client that wants to stream audio online. The thing is, they are a traditional FM radio station, and basically want a direct feed of the FM station, commercials and all. I'm a bit confused on how to do this - they'd like to do it for as cheap as possible, which means I should probably look into open source software. But the part I don't get is getting the same FM streaming online. How do I get it in mp3 format to stream it, live? Thanks for any help.
