Jason Matusow admits to some trouble with the word open. We can play the same game with license. Like open, license has many meanings. In software these involve permission to do or own something, or a document proving permission. In open source rights and obligations are ...

Are compiler alternatives valuable?

Yesterday ZDNet had a report that GCC, the compiler which turns most open source code into machine code, will soon update to Version 4.0. Codesourcery is managing the roll-out. What this means is that much of the software written under open source is going to start running faster and better. ...

DELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Date: 03/15/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, virus, spyware
my girlfriend's cousin has a dell dimension 4600c that has been eaten alive by spyware and trojans and everything. she had a dsl connection without any kind of firewall and stuff and no spyware blockers, and norton virus scan (so may as well be no virus scan). i am trying to figure out how to do an image restore, but she can't find the CD that would have that on it. pretty much every computer i have ever had has come with a cd that will let you restore to the factory settings and erase everything else, but dell is weird and likes to do things their own way so i don't know if that will work or not.
if anyone knows anything about dell or has any advice for me. kinda don't wanna wipe the whole drive because i don't wanna spend like 7 hours trying to get the computer back running and then put all the software she needs on there. bleah!!!!!!!!!! help!

Is this in anyway shape or form possible?

4 seperate boxes, 2 windows, one linux, and hopefully one solaris soon enough, each with their own monitor, controlled by a single keyboard? I'd love to figure out how to do this, if there is anyway possible. Doubt it, but never hurts to ask stupid questions right ; )
Also http://www.kellysoftware.com/ssaver/Matrix_ks.asp The Matrix Trilogy is one of my favorites, and although I never normally bother with garbage like screen savers, this one is pretty bad ass, and free, windows users only.

Microsoft now has the chance to redeem itself with regard to Web interoperability. All it needs to do is make sure IE 7 passes the Acid2 test before shipping.

To the Web community I want to say: Microsoft has now been challenged. They will respond, if enough people remind them of the challenge. Please remind them. And, when IE 7 is released, make sure this is the first thing you type into it:

Usability

(IT Professionals) Keywords: software, web, spyware, microsoft, google
Here's a challenge for you.
reviews.cnet.com may or may not have a section dedicated solely to reviewing spyware removal software. It seems that they would, but I can't find it. Can you? If so, what steps did you take to find it?
Many people can find the webpages they need instantly. I, on the other hand, find most sites hard to navigate. If I need something on Microsoft.com, for instance, I don't click around their site's built in navigation. I'll use google's site:microsoft.com functionality. If that fails, I'll try to look around their site. Worst case scenario, I ask someone else to look it up. Anyone else here do the same?
