1. aQuantive is not a Microsoft open source play

Date: 05/29/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: mysql, software, sql, linux, microsoft, apache

Writer Rodney Gedda at Computerworld writes that aQuantive, the online ad agency Microsoft is buying for $6 billion, is an open source play. The reason? Many aQuantive units, including AvenueA Razorfish and Atlas, make extensive use of open source software, including mySQL, Linux, and Apache. If you use open source, are you ...

  2. Open Source Store

Date: 05/30/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: software, web, google

I wanted to ask for some recommendations for an Open Source online store webapp. Basically, I want to setup your standard site that allows me to sell some items and accept credit card transactions.

I've googled for different projects/merchants and found many options; there are a few I am already leaning towards (for example http://www.zen-cart.com/ and paypal for my merchant account seem to be an attractive option). I don't expect to have a high volume of sales (it is more of a hobby type of thing).

Any recommendations? I am not looking for something that "gets the job done", I am looking for a open source online store software that you actually loved using. To me, if I like it, it means I will also get involved with the project and contribute to it...

    Any suggestions?

  3. Are Linux vendors predatory?

Date: 05/30/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: software

I want to continue our discussion about penguins as predators by talking about Covalent. (This limited edition ale was described as ""a bomber you can't refuse" by its producer, Boulder Brewing.) Covalent's business is supporting open source projects, then selling direct support of the same software to corporate clients. Covalent doesn't launch projects. ...

  5. Serious lagging issues

Date: 05/30/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, html, java, security, virus, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft

This may be a basic problem, but it's an extremely frustrating one.

There are times using my computer when it is just extremely lag-gy. One of the primary times is when I come back to it and wake it from the screen saver. Let me give you an example of a usual situation, as it happened just now.

I came in to the computer room to look up something on the computer. It came out of the screen saver, and was sitting on a FireFox screen. I went to file and New Window, and it took THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS to open a new FireFox window. Once it dragged itself through all that it's fine, but that's a terribly annoying problem to have.

Heh, I just went to the search function to find Hijack This, and it took 17 seconds for the Search window to come up! It hasn't always been this way, things used to pop right up! Now, I know that a reformat would probably fix it all but...wow that can be a headache. Could it be anything else?

I am running a Compaq Presario with a 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor and Windows XP. 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

  14. Laptop not charging

Date: 06/07/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, web

I have a Toshiba Satellite P35 laptop in my possession. I just blew the hard drive and threw XP SP2 on it. Everything works fine except for one critical detail - when Windows loads, it does not recognize that the laptop is charging. The P35 has three LED's on the front - a green AC LED that indicates the laptop is plugged in and running off the wall, a green power LED indicating the computer is on, and an amber charging light that indicates the battery is charging (not discharging). When Windows loads, the Charging LED flickers once, and about five seconds later shuts off completely, never to return. The AC light is still on, meaning the motherboard recognizes it's running on AC power, but the charging light is no longer on, and Windows thinks its running on batteries.

I reinstalled Windows, thinking that maybe I jarred the power cord loose during installation, and the same thing occurs. I went to Toshiba's website and downloaded the latest software and drivers. I loaded all of that onto a thumb drive, and booted into Safe Mode thinking I could conserve power - well, not only did it conserve power, the laptop charged quite happily, enabling me to install (mostly) everything.

The only way to charge it again is to shut down, pull out the cord, and plug it back in - it will not charge via normal operation through Windows XP. What could cause XP to go stupid with regards to power consumption like that? Is there a hotfix I should know about? Thank you.

    ~Elliot

Edit: The plot thickens: In order to install Windows updates, my 1AM crafty thinking reminded me that most modern laptops don't wire the battery into the power circuit, meaning you can run the computer solely on AC power without the battery installed. So, I yanked the battery out, booted it up, and low and behold I'm on essentially unlimited power from the wall. After my updates installed, I dropped the battery back in to see if that fixed the problem... and it didn't. Turning it on without the battery, then plugging it in after it boots to XP appears to work briefly, but Windows forgets it's plugged into the wall and switches to battery power again. If you pull the battery out, the system dies; it's like a kiss of death.

It's almost certainly an ACPI issue, which I've not had much experience with. Any ideas?

  15. Strange Wireless adapter trouble

Date: 06/07/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

Here at home we have a Linksys wireless router. Inside my comp is a wireless adapter, also Linksys. We've been having trouble with the signal dropping due to lan phone line intereference(hopefully fixed today) so the signal drops a lot and then comes back. The problem is when it comes back my computer takes a long time to become unfrozen if other programs are running. I tried updating the drivers for the adapter(already updated for the router). Linksys provides software, but it seems just a reinstallation, not a driver update, which is odd. Anyway, any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I'm reluctant to call my comp manufacturer's tech support because i call them a lot due to their aweful computers(widowpc, stay awaaaay).

  18. Development Server on Ubuntu Desktop

    Ubuntu

Last month,I did a clean install of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on my home computer removing the "dapper drake". But it is only now, I got a chance to sit down and install all necessary packages to set up my development server again.

With Dapper Drake, I had to use alien to convert MySQL5 rpm to .deb, because there was no version 5 in the repositories. Anyway, Feisty has all newest versions of software.

This is what I did for setting up my development server:

For installing MySQL server I ran the command: sudo apt-get install mysql-server. Then I installed the following:

MySQL Administrator: It is a Graphical User Interface for administrating MySQL: sudo apt-get install mysql-admin

MySQL Query Browser is a GUI for managing databases: sudo apt-get install mysql-query-browser

    Apache: sudo apt-get install apache2

Apache Manual: sudo apt-get install apache2-doc

    PHP: sudo apt-get install php5

PHP module for Apache: sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5

    Enabling public_html directories for users

Well, I am the only user in my computer. But I can create and edit files without running sudo if I have a public_html directory at my home. sudo a2enmod userdir. I then restarted Apache and created a 'public_html' directory in my home. Now I can access it with http://localhost/~username/.

    Enable mod_rewrite

    1. sudo a2enmod rewrite.
    2. Edit Apache configuration: sudo gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/default
    3. Change line 12: “AllowOverride none” to “AllowOverride all”
    4. save and close
    5. Restart Apache

(Thanks to mod_rewrite for Apache2 in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04)

    How to restart Apache?

    sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload.

    Todo:

    1. Install IEs4Linux.
    2. Install Opera.
    3. Install Komodo Edit.
    4. Install gftp.

Date: 06/17/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

    Hi,

I have recently downloaded movies but they are broken up into parts - like 6 parts to one movie.

I wanted to ask if anyone in this community knows of any free software/freeware that would combine & stich up all the parts into one complete movie file.

if anyone does, could you let me know.

thank you to anyone that helps in advance.
