DDOS’ing the Spammers? Who cares?
Date: 12/03/04
(Java Web) Keywords: software, spam
Lycos Europe as you probably know has created a screen-saver which allows a controlling lycos software to target the idle time of the machines which installed the screen-savers to flood the network of known spammers.
Some people are getting concerned that it amounts to ddos attack.
Frankly I don't care. Anything to get these spammers business down [...]

Massive web trawl nets spammers

(Java Web) Keywords: spam
A 'comprehensive' sweep of the net by 70 law enforcement organisations from 26 countries should help authorities combat phishers, spammers and scammers, says a leading consumer protection agency.
It sounds too good to be true and effective. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
The surprising part of the news is at the end:
According to recent estimates, spam [...]

Naive Bayesian is a failure against SPAM

(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: java, web, spam
I'm currently running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop (had it for about...two years), and there's been this really annoying problem for the past few months, and I've completely given up as to a solution. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to open any new windows. For example, if I'm on a website and I click on someone that's supposed to come up on a popup, it won't. But I get the regular, annoying, spam-like popups just fine. At first I thought it was because of Javascript, like my computer was eating it or something...but it doesn't work with people who insert the " target='blank' >" code either. I've looked through all of my Internet Options and computer options, and I can't seem to find my way out. Any solutions?

All comments get nuked by Blackhole option on blocking open proxy lists in WordPress 1.5 (Strayhorn)
Date: 03/17/05
(Java Web) Keywords: spam
It was surprising to find no comment spam after installing WordPress 1.5, noting that I haven't enabled CAPTCHA with this upgrade. However I soon realized that I wasn't receiving any normal comments too on very commentable articles.
I realized yesterday the culprit was this option in WordPress: Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies. [...]

RSS Push Model (ex. PubSub) is not viable in long run

PubSub is a tool to push feed items to your desktop. You register at PubSub, identify topics of interest and the news will start coming to your desktop automated and in near real-time. This model shares the same weakness as email. Both push content to your desktop. Email now also pushes spam (around 80% of [...]

Does anyone know how to stop the spam bots from posting on guestbooks? I have a few sites up and I have to monitor all the php guestbooks for bot posts.
And some of the posts I can't even delete. I know HTML and basics but my friend made me the PHP guestbook so I don't know it 100%
Hopefully someone can help me! Thanks.

Ideal e-mail & news clients
Date: 03/31/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: templates, software, html, security, virus, spam
I'm really dissatisified with the current state of e-mail and news software, so I've come here to ask for suggestions based on certain requirements.
I only have one general requirements between the two of them (e-mail and nntp software). They should be free (as in beer) or preferably open source. If I must I will pay.
E-mail
*Fast, fast, fast - if it's slow on my 2Ghz P4 then something is wrong.
*OE (Outlook Express) or The Bat! like interface. I don't want to do 2983492384239482 billion tweaks to make it right.
*Should be able to effeciently and "stable-y" (to recover from corruption/crashes and in terms of not redownloading the same messages.) large mail boxes with tens of thousands of messages.
*Effecient support for said mailbox via IMAP.
*Multiple account support
*Good support for contact lists
*Should include built in HTML viewer, not rely on something like MSIE's HTML display control. It should also be smart enough to only display basic stuff, with the option to disable displaying of "external" (non-embedded) images.
*Relatively easy to use plug-in support. Preferably something procmail like that executes external programs for each program or something even more effecient (like a dynamically loaded library that is persistent in memory). This will be used for external viruses and anti-spam crud. (Note: while built in anti-spam stuff is nice, I'd rather rely on the much better external anti-spam stuff and AFAIK there isn't any e-mail software that can mark messages as spam and auto-send them back to an external anti-spam program).
*Built in procmail like stuff is good too.
*Support for mail message templates (i.e. different ones for forwarding, replies, etc...)
*Should include advanced searching and filtering options like in The Bat!, except less crappy.
*Good S/MIME and OpenPGP support that is actually compliant with the standards and can decode messages in place (not just launch an external program to view them).
*Ability to sort messages by various factors.
*Good mail message import/export ability for backup. Compression is nice, but I can always do that manually.
*High configurability in general is good.
News
*Fast, fast, fast - if it's slow on my 2Ghz P4 then something is wrong.
*Should be able to handle large newsgroups, on the order of tens of thousands of messages well.
*A fast OE like interface with a preview pane that can show images.
*Same thing as above about HTML viewing.
*Good binary/encoding support is ok, but I'm not using it for porn so it's not a big deal.
*Ability to sort messages by many different factors
It should be obvious, but security is important in the implementation.
P.S. Spare me what you think the obvious answer is. I won't bash specific clients, but lets just say some are just plain stupid in design and remain popular despite crap for features or crap for a user interface/configuration methodology.

Mailing list question...
Date: 03/31/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: spam
Anybody use a good mailing list system (preferrably free or super cheap) that they would recommend? Some stupid person on my mailing list reported me as spam because she forgot she was on my list (dumbass) and the company I use didn't handle it so well. I blew my stack at them and before I go really crazy I'd like to move my mailing list and then proceed to go nuts on them.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

WordPress - Matt's reply
Date: 01/01/70
(Webmaster View) Keywords: css, spam
Matt Mullenweg's response to the WordPress - search engine spam scandal:
The articles hosted content thing was just a short-term experiment, an interesting idea (original and relevant Wikipedia-type content on the site) that was badly implemented. As an experiment it could have been conducted much better than it was. The content should have been more topical to WP issue, I should have kept up with the content that was going up, the links should have never had the overflow CSS, and I should have discussed it with more people. Each was a mistake and they combined badly - I'm very sorry.
I take full responsibilty for how it was implemented. It was wrong, and it wasn't thought through
