  3. Ads345

Date: 05/29/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, web, spyware

I used to have a problem with Ads234, I thought I had fixed it... but then it mutated into Ads345. Frequently, when I click a link I get redirected to an Ads345 website. The URL will say "http://www.ads345.com/requesturl=where I wanted to go" and I can just cick "skip" to get past it... but this has gone on for months and months, I can't seem to get rid of it! I use virus/adware/spyware scanners religiously (Norton, AdAware, and Spybot). I've tried deleteing the "key" or whatever. But it's still there! And midAdle even showed up on my programs list, but it won't let me remove it. Help?

  4. Computer restarting on its own

Date: 06/03/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

This has been driving me crazy. Since I got a new modem (er, not sure what it's called, but I suppose I could find out - it's a modem that we run both the cable internet and digital phone through) my computer has been restarting on its own. At first it was doing this when I was downloading things (usually, if they're big files, or too many files at once), but now it'll do it just when clicking on a page - not always, but it's clear when it does that it's a direct result of the clicking. It can be a page on LJ or something like that, nothing that'll give me a virus or anything.

Nonetheless, I do have a virus scanner, and it scans everyday. It also updates itself automatically, so I doubt there's a virus going on. I also scan for spyware every once in a while, and it hasn't helped at all. I'm running XP Pro, and using Firefox, WinMX, BitTorrent (not anymore, actually, but it did it when I was using BT before) - but it's not related to that since I was using that stuff before the new modem.

Should I see if the cable company will replace the modem, or is there a simpler solution?

  5. Problems Installing New Fonts

Date: 06/03/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: virus, spyware

The other day I downloaded some new fonts to use in the business card I am creating, but when I went to install the fonts in the Fonts folder in my Control Panel it wouldn't let me. What I mean is, normally I would open up Control Panel > Fonts > File >Install New Font, but the option to install wasn't there. I tried just dropping the fonts in the folder, but that didn't work either.

Does anyone have any idea as to what might be going on and how to fix it? Perhaps a virus? I ran my AVG Anti-Virus and came up with nothing though, so I'm not sure if that's it. I also ran my Scan Spyware just to be on the safe side and still nothing. Any ideas? I'm using Windows 98 by the way.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Lots a questions..

Date: 06/04/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, virus, web, spyware

Hello, newbie here! I've got a lot of problems so I'll just put the first batch behind a cut..

-Is it safe to delete Internet Explorer/Outlook Express if I have Firefox and Thunderbird? Is there a way for Firefox to actually connect to the internet without using another program? (I use Walmart Connect)

-What are your favorite programs to have on your computer?

-We got a new computer because the old one was full of roaches (well actually we borrowed it and never gave it back, heh), and it doesn't have a whole lot of the basic programs...

-One day this computer stopped displaying the background unless it was starting up or shutting down. A few months later it went into safe mode and said something about accepting a trojan horse and to scan the comp with anti-virus software to make it alright.
Well, I've scanned it with Spybot, AVG Free (one that keeps coming up is DSO Exploit), and Whos Watching me, the free online thingy from Pandasoftware (I THINK its panda software. It starts with Panda but I'm not sure about the 'software' part), and maybe a few other programs and the computer's gotten a little faster but it won't switch out of safe mode. Oh, and I've also defragged it more often (yay for regular computer maininence! If only I could take care of myself that much, lol), and stopped visiting those wierd websites that like to install spyware but my dad gets on and visits those sites ON PURPOSE, unwittingly defeating my attempts at limiting the amount of stuff we get.

-And, is there a way to keep roaches and other insects out of the computer?

I would ask you how to kill my dad and get away with it so that I wouldn't have to put up with him messing the computer up so bad but then I'd be miserable and we wouldn't have the money to have anything at all.

    Thanks in advance.

Please forgive me... the results list is a bit long...

For a little while now, my computer has refused to enter Standby or Shut Down completely. In both cases, it will try to do one of the two, and then freeze. It is becoming highly annoying. I have WinXP - SP2. I have Norton Internet Security 2005, Norton Systemworks 2005, and Norton GoBack 4.0. I suspect it might be one of these, seeing as it started happening shortly after they were installed. I also have Ad-Aware SE Professional 1.06r1, Spybot S&D 1.4, HiackThis v1.99.1, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (which is going to expire at the end of July...). They have detected the following:

  18. I'm not sure how to post this: Spy Sheriff Problem

Date: 07/04/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: php, browser, html, asp, spyware, microsoft

Hello. I'm not big on computers, only knowing how to do some HTML and how to surf, use some typing programs.

I encountered Spy Sheriff about a day ago and still am having problems.

    Computer: Intell (R) Pentium
    Microsoft Windows 2000
    523,760 KB RAM
    Browser used: Mozilla

On my Admin account, I have this black box with these red letters: SYSTEM STOPPED

White Text: System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected.

It is recommeded [sic!] to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed.

I have on my other account, SM (not real account name), Spybot: S&D. Everytime I try to start up that account, I encounter Symantec Email on the fritz. It shows alot of pop windows open for email.

I have tried to run Spybot: S&D and Regedit to kill all of the Spy Shreiff stuff, but it is like a zombie, it keeps on coming back and won't die!

I only use Hotmail email, so not Microsoft Outlook-esque stuff.

I'll admit that I am not the brightest in the world, and I feel that I would look stupid if the other computer_help community approached my problem. The only reason I sought this community after reading the information page, was that the community mentioned even "someone's monitor being on fire" or "just need help sending email."

My cousin used to pad this computer, it is custom-built with firewalls and such, so much that I felt inhibited, but now I feel like it should be that way, but then again, I am not majoring in computers... =(

{EDIT: On some other LJ community, someone spoke of a porn thing popping up. --I found it...ugg...it installed an icon of some woman, and the text: Free XXX (sighs)

Now I downloaded some Spyware BeGone thing and so far I have 101 infections found.... =(

The symantec thing has stopped something has to be right on the SM account. Still working on solution...

EDIT as of 3:16PM Indiana time: I uninstalled "Spybot: S&D"...but now the SM account won't work...)

    I've been reading stuff:

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=37&t=37021
    http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic166292-29-1.aspx

I wonder if I can actually get (the porn site popped up again) coolsearch.biz or something) the Hijack This to work, but isn't it obly for Internet Explorer? (sighs, wants to throw computer out window)

  19. Aurora.exe and Nail.exe problems & info

Date: 07/10/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

I took it upon myself to take on the task of cleaning out my nephews computer of all the viruses/spyware/adware out of his pc but Aurora.exe and Nail.exe always seem to elude me. Ive had this same problem with my own pc and I finally got rid of it on my own with the help of Avast but now when I try to do the same for my nephews pc, it wont work, it completely misses them and tells me that it didnt find anything when I do a boot scan for em. What I want to know is, if anyone here has any tips or links that would help me solve the problem of these bad boys. I do remember someone posting a link that had info on Aurora.exe but I cant seem to find it in the memories. If anyone knows what Im talking about do repost the link or anything concerning this problem. My nephews pc runs on windows xp - home edition, which is probably the reason its confusing me since I have a different version of xp. Again, any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance.
