web design/developer certifications
Date: 03/21/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, technology, asp, web
I've been wondering about web-related technology certifications that might be worth my while. yes, I know experience is invaluable when it comes to enhancing a resume, but I also wouldn't mind having a solid certification in a web-related area. I'm not referring to web design degrees as I already have an associates degree (interactive multimedia) and I had been working towards a second web dev degree that may someday lead to a bachelors. so my questions on web certifications:
are there organizations/sites that are more highly regarded than others for what they have to offer?
what are some good ones?
what are some reputable/credible web certifications out there that you have, or know of?
I've only done a brief search so far, but I have noticed the HTML certification that w3schools has to offer:
http://www.w3schools.com/cert/cert_html.asp
any thoughts on that one?
thanks in advance for any input, advice, comments, etc..

Moderator, if this isn't allowed on this forum just let me know.
I get a lot of emails daily for various web dev and programming positions available. I found a good job, but I keep my resume up. Ya never know.
Just feel guilty constantly deleting them when I know someone may need them. Figured I'd at least post them for any coder friends that may be looking for something. I lj-cut it so it wouldn't be too obtrusive.
If these are just found to be crap, let me know and I'll stop passing them on. But some of them at least appear to have potential. They're all fresh over the past 24 hours.
To whoever is currently looking, hope these help! If it's ok, I'll send periodic digests of these if anyone finds them worthwhile.

McDonalds.com
Date: 05/15/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: technology, web
Is it just me or does McDonalds have a really awful web layout? http://www.McDonalds.com
Here is a note I wrote to McDonalds about it:
Your website is really awful. I've been looking around the net for all the major brands I can think of (I'm a designer/developer and am always looking to see what other designers come up with) and I expected a corporation as big as McDonalds to have a better page than this. I realize not many of your customers have any need for McWeb interaction, but as a major (perhaps one of THE major) corporations in the world, you should do some justice to your product and have a nice webpage. You might want to take a look at what http://www.gotmilk.com/ has done with the get the glass campaign http://www.gettheglass.com/ for example. I would think that particularly with all the contests you have going that you could come up with something better than this. I would suggest aiming at more content and a more interactive web 2.0 layout. The future is now, after all, and if McDonalds has been able to adapt and survive, even grow as a corportation for the past 50 years, you'd think you would be keeping up with the times and technology of 2007.
Whereas, oddly enough Burger King seems to hire pretty good designers: www.bk.com
On a different note, if anyone knows of some really excellent corporate pages (especially retail) I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

PC audit tool
Date: 05/17/07
(IT Professionals) Keywords: technology, database, linux
My company is looking for an audit tool which will help us track down hardware, e.g. when someone says "do we have a spare dual core PC kicking around?" we could search a database (updated daily?) of specs including when those machines were last used.
It's easy enough (in theory) to keep track of PC specs and where they were deployed but the hard part is finding out if they're actually being used - not that any of us hoard hardware :)
We have ~200 Windows machines (mostly XP or 2003 Server, but some NT4 and a few Vista installs recently) plus a few Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) servers in one site; we do maintain a couple of subnets, but the tool wouldn't have to span them (we could run it separately on each net if need be).
The tool doesn't have to be freeware but personally I'm a big fan of open source; it would, of course, have to be malware-free and be able to interrogate Windows machines (the Linux boxes would be a bonus but not essential). We're not going the extra step of trying to physically locate the hardware - that would require too much technology (i.e. money), and it won't hurt the techies to do a little legwork. :)
Any recommendations?

long complicated question
Date: 06/06/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: technology, web
I'm designing a website for massage therapist. Is there a way to either program (or a free program) that allows customers to:
1) See a calendar of availabilities
2) Pick an available date and time
3) Then the calendar would be updated with the newly scheduled appointments
Is is also possible to get them, should she accept credit cards, pay for the appointment before it is booked?
Any suggestions for tutorials, or inexpensive pre-written programs would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't designed pages in a long time so I'm rusty with the technology if I were just pointed in the right directions.
The site is www.redthreadenergetics.com
Thanks for your consideration.
