  5. Because htmlhelp is no help at all...

    Date: 04/05/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web, seo

    I'm trying to use a marquee in a header on my LiveJournal that will stop when the viewer's mouse hovers over it. I've seen this done as news or headline tickers on websites. (Note: I do not want the marquee tag that has the text stop to one side... I want the text to marquee as usual, only stopping on a mouseover.)

    I used the following code:

    but it looks like this when I use it:

    Hover your mouse over this to make it stop!

    The text doesn't stop moving as I have commanded it to in the tag. I've been to many HTML websites to see if I'm doing anything wrong, but I can't see any difference between my code and theirs.

    I'm able to view this kind of marquee perfectly on other sites, stopping the text on mouseover and everything... is it just a LJ incompatibilty? Please help me!

    Thanks in advance.

  7. Server Error in '/' Application.

    Date: 04/05/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: browser, asp, security, web

    I am new to asp.net and i recently bought some new webspace.

    when i uploaded the directories from my computer to my webspace they stopped working and i kept getting this error:

    "Server Error in '/' Application."

    now strangly enough if i upload all of the data without it's own folder into the main directory of my webspace then it works...how would i be able to get it to work by uploading each project in it's own directory?

    this is the description of the error:

    "Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

    Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off"."

    I've changed the web.config file in the way in which the error page told me to and i'm still getting the same message.

    what's going wrong here then? (I'm still quite new to all of this).

    Hey everybody, '[info]'julisana again.

    I'm running into a little snag with webforms. I'm a bit more experienced in this area using JSP, as I actually know what the proper command for it is. But anyway. I'm looking for the command/class in C# that would be comporable to the request.getParameter(); function available in JSP (It's used to get form parameters that are submitted across multiple pages using sessions.

    But, what I'm trying to do is not exactly that. I've got a web form that has a function attached to the submit button. I'd like that function to be able to pull all the values off of the form and stick them into a session to be retrieved on the next page, and I'm not quite sure how to do it in ASP.NET using C#.

    Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks!
    --Lisa

    P.S. if this is a little disjointed, I apologize. I'm running on a poor night's sleep and not functioning quite normally.

  13. Bizarre and irritating internet problem

    Date: 04/06/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, web, ebay

    Hi folks,

    I'm having serious problems with the net and it's preventing me from doing my studies. I hope someone knows what's going on here. Whenever I use a website that requires me to enter a password, such as, for example eBay, when I click enter I get the following error message:

    "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."

    This not only happens on eBay but many other sites too. Including the site I use to search academic journals.

    Here are some points:

    1) I have used these sites regularly without any problems.
    2) The sites are not connected to each other.
    3) I do have a firewall, etc but I have had them for a long time without any problems.

    Please, someone, help me. If you have any suggestions or ideas I would VERY MUCH like to hear.

    Yours in grovelling,

  14. Safari is sucking the life out of me

    Date: 04/06/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: browser, asp, java, web

    I'm having a problem that I hope someone may be able to help with.
    I have some .NET and Javascript code that works in IE, NN, Moz, and Opera BUT it is not working in Safari.

    I have a webform called Input.aspx

    The Input.aspx.vb page in Page_Load has these two lines:
    btnSubmit.Attributes.Add("onClick", "javascript: return Validate(event, this);")
    GetPostBackEventReference(Page)

    The Input.aspx page has a button btnSubmit and some Javascript
    In the javascript I am using a flag called "problem"
    When problem is true I return false from the event which stops the further propagation of the btnSubmit's click.
    When problem is false I
    a. hide a span that encloses btnSubmit
    b. show a span that says, "Processing...Please Wait"
    c. return true

    This works in IE, NN, Mozilla, and Opera.
    The problem is Safari.
    In Safari, it performs a, b, and c, but the btnSubmit Server Side Click event doesn't happen.

    So, I thought, okay I'll just call __doPostBack right after step b. The problem with that is that the Server Side Click happens twice then in IE, NN, etc.

    I can't figure out what the hell Safari is doing (or not doing, really) with the __doPostBack?

    Here is the Javascript in Input.aspx
    //some validating stuff
    //assume that at this point problem is either "true" or "false"
    function Validate(e,r)
    {
    if (problem == "true") // problem, cancel event
    {
    return false;
    e.returnValue = false;
    }
    else // no problem, continue
    {
    // hide button, show processing gif, continue postback
    lbutton.style.display = "none";
    lprocessing.style.display = "inline";
    return true;
    e.returnValue = true;
    }
    }

    All browsers (including Safari) are performing Validate upon btnSubmit onClick event.
    All browsers except Safari are continuing on with the Server Side Click event of btnSubmit after returning from the function Validate().

    Any ideas why Safari just stops?

  16. php and the nntp protocol

    Date: 04/07/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

    so i'm studying ways to implement a web interface with an nntp server, aka newsgroups server.

    I've tried the low-level way, opening a socket and fwrite-ing the commands and fget-ing the results.

    the thing is, i don't know why, but when the server sends me the list of all the newsgroups available, or the numbers of the msgs in a newsgroup i never get the entire reply!
    let's say there's 100 newsgroups. I only get 40 or something. It seems like the buffer can't hold that ammount of bytes or something.

    Another way to do it, is using the imap functions. I've tried. imap_open, ok. but then i can't figure out how to list the msgs on a newsgroup. i've tried almost every imap function that makes sense, with no avail.

    So, bottom line, if there's anyone who has worked with anything like this and would like to point me in the right direction, i'd be most thankful.

    i'm putting the code behind a cut.

    list_groups.php

    Connection failed.

    \n"; } else { echo "

    Connected.

    "; $cmd = "mode reader\r\n"; fwrite( $conn, $cmd ); $lista .= fgets( $conn, 128 ); $lista .= "
    "; $cmd = "authinfo user $user\r\n"; fwrite( $conn, $cmd ); $lista .= fgets( $conn, 128 ); $lista .= "
    "; $cmd = "authinfo pass $passwd\r\n"; fwrite( $conn, $cmd ); $lista .= fgets( $conn, 128 ); echo "

    Authenticated.

    "; $lista .= "
    "; $cmd = "list\r\n"; fwrite( $conn, $cmd ); $lista .= fgets( $conn, 128 ); $lista .= "
    "; $lista .= fgets( $conn, 256 ); $lista .= "

    newsgroups list

    "; $alllist = ""; $alllist .= fread( $conn, 20480 ); // couldn't work with: while( !feof ( $conn ) ) because it never // reaches the end of file, because i can't get the whole stream :( $newsgroups = explode("\n", $alllist ); $final_list = Array(); foreach( $newsgroups as $newsgroup ) { $raw = explode( " ", $newsgroup ); $title = $raw[0]; $num_posts = (int) $raw[1]; $dados = Array( "title" => $title, "num_posts" => $num_posts ); array_push( $final_list, $dados ); } echo "
    "; echo ""; echo " "; echo "
    "; fclose( $conn ); } ?>

    if you want more, ask. but if you could help me with this example, i'd be set.

    like i said, i get 48 newsgroups despite the server giving me over 100. (i've tried using telnet and it works, but through php, nothing)

    what am i doing wrong? :-\

  17. An Introduction of Sorts...

    Date: 04/07/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, software, web

    Hi all,

    I'm very new to LiveJournal, so this post is just intended to introduce myself to this community and to make myself available to help others should they so wish.

    In the daytime I'm a professional software and website developer, working for a systems integrator on big corporate projects. In my spare time I pick at a number of open source projects that are available via my homepage. I guess I tend to do the open source stuff because it's giving something back to the internet community that we all take so much from.

    Recently I've been working on a content management system, although I have to admit that it's taken a bit of a back seat recently - probably something to do with Gran Turismo 4 turning up :)

    Anyway - if anybody needs help with a PHP project, I'm here. I'm usually online all day in the UK (GMT) via the various means listed on my userinfo page on LiveJournal so feel free to give me a shout.

  18. Oh no! A message board question!

    Date: 04/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, security, web

    Ok, let me start off by saying that I did go back about a month looking through posts to see if this had been discussed recently.  Also, there are no community memories to check. So I feel that I've done my best to look before I post.  Also, I understand that the "these forums are the best" debate will go on forever and that it's impossible to get an unbiased answer.  That's why I just want opinions.

    I'm looking for a nice, simple message board package for a client's website.  The only feature I absolutely need is the ability to attach files.  I don't want anything bloated or full of security holes, and I don't want anything that's not free.  So no phpBB, no vBulleting, no Invision PB, etc.

    There are three that I am looking at right now:
    PunBB
    MyBB
    SMF

    Now, PunBB would be my first choice since it is really simple, trimmed down, and looks nice.  However, the File Attachment mod for the newest version isn't done yet.

    So I'm looking for opinions on the other two.  Anybody use either of them and have good/bad things to say?  Also, are there other, better free message boards out there that I'm missing?

    Ok ..

    using windows 98 (for reference)

    this is very odd. After getting rid of this nasty annoying virus that infected all my .htt files, I had to delete them all and then replace them .. or so I thought.

    for some reason, the "view as webpage" option is MISSING from the view menu. It's not there. I can get the folders as I want them, but they don't stay that way. Also, the "make all folders the same" button is greyed out, and I can't use it.

    also, how do I get my icons to stay listed as small icons? currently, they keep reverting back to the unlisted super-huge icons and they won't stay when I fix them :(
