(Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, web
I was looking at the web server stats on my work machine I noticed that I've had 13 versions of Opera.
I've just downloaded 7.54u1, so the leader board isn't about to change. It was version 7.23 that I used the most, with 7.54 in second place.
For comparison, in the same period I've had hits from 3 versions of IE, 15 versions of Mozilla-based browsers, and four others.

Temptation, or Restlessness
Date: 02/28/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: web
I don't know why, but I've been considering more and more switching from Firefox/Thunderbird to Mozilla Suite. It's got the little thing that pre-loads it and stays in memory (or, at least it did in Mozilla 1.3a, which was my last time using it--now 1.8beta is out). I'm pretty sure I could transfer a lot of my stuff easily, and then mail and web will communicate better, but here's the thing: Do I really, really want to do this? What features of Firefox and Thunderbird would I be leaving behind? Would I be able to use my preferred theme at all?

SVG Viewer
Date: 02/21/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: web
I just tried for the umpteenth time to install Adobe SVG viewer in FireFox. When it shows the brocken plugin icon instead of an SWG, FireFox "install plug-in" still says "No plugin found". No plugin for SVG. Yaaa right.
It blows me away that such little things are left to go on and on and on and on for months and years. Disheatening.
The best description of installation I found on the web makes reference to Adobe SVG Viewer 6 ... while Adobe's site offers 3 for download. Brilliant? No, not brilliant.

Replying to comments from Thunderbird
Date: 02/20/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: web
I'm sure this issue has probably been discussed, but I couldn't immediately find a post that dealt with it. Apologies if this has already been flogged to death.
When I try to reply to an LJ comment from Thunderbird, I get the following error message:
Error
One or more errors occurred processing your request. Please go back, correct the necessary information, and submit your data again.
- Comment not posted: POST required, or missing parameter.
Is there a way to fix this, or are we stuck replying to comments at the website rather than from the email client? Thanks in advance.

The frames alternative question...
I'm creating a web site that has a flash header (with navigation) and a flash side bar. These elements are part of the basic layout and are going to be on every page of the site... I would like to have it so that when I click on a link in the header the content area changes, but the header and sidebar do not reload. I *could* use frames... but I refuse.
I've used includes before as an alternative to frames, but with includes the shared elements still reload on every page.
How do I accomplish this without using frames?
Thanks for any help :)

silly and basic question. [solved]
Date: 02/28/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: css, web
i'm trying to achieve the simple effect of using CSS's border-bottom to fake an underline of a different color (and style).
so, i have this on my stylesheet:
a:link, a:visited, a:active {
border-bottom: 1px dotted #ccc;
}
my only problem is that i don't want the links with images to have this bottom border. i've tried doing a img { }
but this targets the image itself, setting its border to 0. but i want to target the anchor tag.
The question is, is there any way of achieving this without using classes? ie:
i've searched the web, but i haven't found any page dealing with this issue (which leads me to think that the only way is to use classes).
thanks in advance

Hi, my first time posting here.
Date: 02/28/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, web
Hello, I was wondering if I should build my site into all flash. But here's the thing, some people i've asked around about not having the plugin.. they usually denies the installation. My school browser, which is I.E, doesn't have a flash plugin as well. You see, i want to create a webpage viewable for most browsers.
So, what should i do?
Here's my first opinion, create a page for viewers to choose from.
For example, having a flash page, then having a regular viewable sited page? Which will take more time than neccessary. :/
Thanks in advance.

Dreamweaver MX 'Flashing' Problem?
Date: 02/27/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: virus, web
I'm using Dreamweaver on Windows XP SP2. I haven't used it on the machine for a while and I'm sure it worked fine before! When it's starting up and loading the windows the top third of the screen will flash. Basically a grey block without content appears over the window (in code or design mode) covering any code, the row of buttons and the blue program bar above flashes too. It repeats it if I alt-tab to another program and back. Most annoyingly, it will have that block flash whenever I click the mouse button anywhere near there.
I've gone through the preferences but can't see anything obvious, searched the web, tried disabling the anitvirus/firewall stuff (AVG/Sygate Personal) but it hasn't helped. Anyone know how to fix it?

centering a div with xhtml strict [solved]
Date: 02/26/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, web, microsoft
hi guys!
before you all start shouting out: margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;
let me surprise you. I'm not after the obvious solution. i'm after the microsoft solution. (pls, don't kill me)
i'm trying to get my website to validate through xhtml1.1 and i have it all nice and neat on firefox. but on IE the div won't center (unless i use the deprecated tag
).
since i believe all users should be able to see a correct (even if lacking some effects) view of the website, i have to try to center this damned div. :P
but i also want it to validate.
So if anyone could help me out, i'd be thankful.

Hey all,
I am currently trying my hand at a web design business idea, I have got some potential clients lined up, but I wanted to ask your opinion on the two sites I have made so far!
http://www.initiatewebdesign.tk < That is the site for my web design thingy, it's on free hosting at the moment until I make a bit of money (I hope!) and then I will buy the domain
http://www.formypain.co.uk < A fan site for the band For My Pain - for this one I have brought the hosting as it did very well and wanted to make it better with forums and the likes.
Thanks a lot!

Client side JavaScript search
Date: 02/23/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, database, java, web
Lo,
I've a great big table and I'd like users to be able to easily search it. Normally I'd produce this with a database backend and just do a search function with that. That's not an option this time. Instead I was simply aiming to use JavaScript to open up the web browser's find feature. That's Ctrl+F on Internet Explorer, etc.
I've had no luck though. Anyone know (if it's possible) the JavaScript to open the find/search box in the web browser. Anyone have any suggestions for a client side search function? (Just one static page.)
advTHANKSance.

So I got an email from an Indie record label wanting me to do their site! ^_^ My banner worked.
Problem: They want a shopping cart on their site. I dont know how to do one.
I've heard of sites that provide FREE shopping carts for web designers. Such as this: www.agoracart.com.
Has anyone used any of these type of carts? I really want to do the site, but I need to get a shopping cart on the site.
Thanks for the help!

Competition: Reasonable templates, content editors, plus goodies OR my persuasive skills?
Date: 02/23/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, hosting
A potential new client/acquaintance casually contacted me inquiring about having me design a professional web site for her company....Shortly thereafter - before the sit down ironing out details discussion - she sends me an e-mail inquiring about another company who offers 50 MB hosting, 2 GB month transfer, domain name registration, web site design (generic template, mind you), a do-it-yourself content editor, 10 e-mail addresses, a professional description/write up of the company for "about us," "services," etc., AND a dial up internet connection for only.... $39.99 per month.
That's cheap.
I can recommend a good hosting company to her who only charges $4.00 per month for 500MB hosting, 25 GB data transfer, and.... like who needs 100 e-mail addresses, but it's included........BUT my regular web/graphic rates are between $25 and $40 per hour!!!
Her inquiry regarding this $39.99 a month company with a $39.99 set-up fee really seems like a better deal for a simple web site....only $480-$500 per YEAR if she wants a basic web site to start out with for her company, plus all the extra goodies.
How can I woo her away from wow of hosting, domain name, template design, do-it-yourself content editor, e-mail, content, AND an internet connection included in the cost? *scratches head* She's a good acquaintance and she's coming to me for advice, but I want her business!
What do you think of my e-mail reply to her? How does it come across???

Hi Mrs. Kenny,
I've never heard of "so-and-so company" but I am am familiar with the type of web site editor program they offer (a design firm I do contract work for also provides the same service). "Unlimited updates with our easy-to-use online Website editor" - which means, the web site design is a generic template (some other company can also use the same design/layout/look - the web site design is not unique to your business/company identity) and is powered by a semi-user-friendly, but very basic "back-end/behind the scenes" type of web based program so you can update the content within the web site (mind you, only basic pictures and text, not the design itself) from your own computer without needing to know complicated web design coding language.
Personally I am not a big fan of the do-it-yourself web site editors/programs - I can see how it is a neat feature, but it is very basic and limited. The do-it-yourself web editor programs seem like a good idea because the client can have control over updating the content (text) of the web site themselves whenever they want....however, based on my past experiences with previous clients and these programs, most of the clients I've set up template web sites for and trained to use the program (on behalf of the company I contract with) end up feeling stifled because:
1) perhaps they are computer novices and find the web site editor program is challenging to use
2) feel limited by the basic features and the plain, generic web site design; not having creative freedom to change things around
3) have to pay a lot extra if they decide they do want to change things (or have to pay extra for services like search engine optimization)
or
4) stuck in an expensive, long-term monthly contract they cannot break
I must admit though, Mrs. Kenny, $39.99 per month with a one-time set-up fee of $39.99 (in comparison to other companies I know about who offer almost the same type of full package deal but charge a $1500 start up fee plus an additional $88 per month for hosting/domain fee), "so-and-so company" does seem very reasonable at $480-$500 per year and might be a good way to start with a basic web presence......that is, if you feel comfortable with the template look of the web site design promoting your business and if you feel comfortable updating the content/text yourself.
It really depends on what you have in mind for the design/layout/content of your business web site, your goals, your audience, how often you want to update it or if you would like to update it yourself, and what your budget is.
______________________________________________
How do I dissuade her from the cheapy company? Any suggestions? I really appreciate your thoughts, comments, ideas, and wooing effort suggestions!

Hey guys
Date: 02/02/05
(Web Hosts) Keywords: web, hosting
Hey I did a search on web hosting and found you guys. I have a question.
I have a 5-year domain name registration with Freewebs Domains (http://domains.freewebs.com) which I purchased for $75. However, they do not provide enough webspace initially and charge a little too much for additional space ($25 per 100 MB per year). So I had this idea and wanted to see if it would work.
I have a high-speed T1 connection at home with plenty of bandwidth and about 300 GB of hard drive space. What I want to do is be able to host my .com website from my computer at home using the computer as the host server. Is it possible to do this without spending too much money?

Uh oh...

(Web Hosts) Keywords: web, hosting, google
Google just appeared on the ICANN register list.
There's a lot of strange things going on over there. And to be perfectly honest, I don't like it. Especially when it begins to directly affect me and my business.
I'm wondering when they're going to hit web hosting. After all, if they can easily offer a gig for mail, it's not entirely unreasonable to think about the concepts that they could offer for hosting...
I'm not sure when, but the Google I used to know and love appears to be turning into a bit of an evil child, the sort that morphs into a megacorp... although I could be mistaken, of course. Still, doesn't hurt to keep your eyes on it...
