1. Spreading some click-love… The future of free web

    Date: 02/01/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: web

    I have seen references in web-pages requesting visitors to show their appreciation or help by clicking on the advertiser's link. Such desperate methods are of questionable ethics as it provides unwanted clicks for the advertisers, who pays for them. On the other hand they help the site owner in the short term, undermining the [...]

    Date: 01/16/05 (See my site)    Keywords: browser, html, java, web

    For the first time in god-knows-how-long, I have uploaded a new layout for my website. Please, please, I implore you all to follow this link:

    http://www.sweetfrenchbread.com/index5.html...

    ...read my "test run" notes on the main page, click around a little, and let me know how it is displaying with your montior, screen resolution, browser, etc. It represents my first attempt at writing any javascript stuff, so it is quite likely that it won't be displaying correctly for everyone. Screenshots are appreciated, too.

    Thanks, guys!

    I am not a developer. I repeat: I am not a developer. My brain's so fried I can't even remember what I learned about CSS.

    Neither am I a designer. I just do a hell of a lot of stuff on the Web poking about. I'm a writer.

    Right now I'm testing Flooble Chatterbox on two different pages. I beg you, beg, beg, cry, crawl, plead with you to drop by either of the following pages (or both if you're just a really generous soul) and say hello in the chatterboxes on the pages.

    If you want to, leave a URL to the favorite webpage/site you've designed or your journal.

    Real Life vs. The Internet

    or "Wired!"

    I tried to use Shoutbox at first for this, but it wouldn't load consistently. That bugged me. If anyone knows of a better program, please tell me. Also, if anyone knows of good, easy to administrate forum software, I'd be happy to know that too.

    Thank you so much.

    Hi!

    ...I'm new here, I just started my site, d0rkella. I was poking around looking for people do to link exchanges with, and decided to check and see if LJ had any communities with webpages.

    And naturally, it did. Well, I'm not too totally sure if this is all allowed but I looked at some of the past entries and and the info and it didn't seem too terribly wrong, but if it is just tell me and I'll delete it.

    The site is fairly new, but I'm trying to work on it whenever I get the chance. And comments or link exchanges would be super. =)

  10. Events and links

    Date: 02/03/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: web

    I'm working on this webform that perviously had two buttons that controlled the state of the form. Let's call them "Summary" and "Detail". When you click a button an event fires and the proper actions are taken. All was well and good.

    Now I need to change the interface so that instead of buttons it uses folder tabs as the interface. That is soemthing like this:

      Summary    Detail

    [Summary goes here]

      Summary    Detail

    [Detail goes here]

    I'd like clicking on the tabs to fire an event just like clicking on the buttons did. The problem is the tag doesn't have an OnClick event/property just a NavigationURL. Is there a way I can get the links to fire an event on the page (submit the form in a way it will be caught by .NET as an event)? I can't just use a URL as I need to save the values from the form (which is rather complicated and not easily compressed into a url).

  11. Exchange Server via .NET?

    Date: 01/31/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: web

    (x-posted).

    Hi all,

    I'm new here and in a bit of a time crunch, so forgive me for not searching all the archives yet, but I'm hoping somebody can help me.

    I'm looking for info on how to talk to Exchange Servers with .NET. Specifically, I'd like to get things like the Calendar out of Exchange for my users, via .NET so I can post that info on a website on a different server. If anyone can point me in the direction of good documentation or (better yet) sample code for these sorts of things, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Disappearing Controls

    Date: 01/24/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    Can anyone tell me what the hell VS.NET's problem is that half the time it won't recognize controls if they are inside tables?

    I have the following snippet in my .aspx page:

        This account is currently on stop. Override or Delete?

        Reason for deletion:

    This fits with the codebehind declarations:
    Protected WithEvents btnOverride As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnDelete As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnContinue As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnCancel As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents lblMessage As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label
    Protected WithEvents txtReason As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
    Protected WithEvents pnlStop As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel
    Protected WithEvents pnlReason As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel

    So how come when I try to set "pnlStop.Visible = True", it works fine, but when I set "pnlReason.Visible = True", I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"? What is the difference between the two?

    Did you know that you can take advantage of multithreading in the Microsoft .NET Framework without having to explicitly create new Thread objects? You can call web services, print, and do other yawn-inducing tasks asynchronously using the Asynchronous Programming Model in the Framework. There are issues with synchronization, however, especially when calling async methods from a Windows Form. In this talk Carl will walk you through the issues and give you some really useful code that you can implement to make your components thread-safe for Windows Forms applications.

    Some of you might know the name of Carl Franklin from his .Net Rocks internet radio show. You also might be familiar with his training services. No matter how you know the name, now's your chance to meet the man.

  14. Tracing

    Date: 01/13/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, sql, web

    I'm having some trouble with tracing. I have a static class whose method I call from a page that I'd like to get trace data from. The method looks like:

    public sealed class DbUtils
    {
    static public int ExecuteNonQuery(string sql, string dsn)
    {
      Trace.WriteLine("SQL", sql);
      int rowsAffected;

      OdbcConnection db     = new OdbcConnection(dsn);
      db.Open();
      OdbcCommand    cmd    = new OdbcCommand(sql, db);
      rowsAffected = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
      db.Close();
      return rowsAffected;
    }
    }
    I've got trace="true" set on both the page I'm looking at and at the application (web.config). I get a lot of trace output at the bottom of the page or by looking at trace.axd, but I never see the information I'm trying to output in this function. Anyone know what I'm missing?

    Update:
    Apparently Page.Trace (from the aspx.cs page) and System.Diagnostics.Trace classes are different beasts. The proper way to make it work is to do this:
    System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Trace.Write("SQL", sql);

  15. Curious bug, or problem with code?

    Date: 01/03/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web, microsoft

    I've got a curious error with ASP.NET 2.0 but before I go reporting it to Microsoft, I thought I'd toss it around here:

    I've been playing around with the new GridView control and so far it's been quite nice with the new gimmicks -- cuts about 90% of my code straight out. However... Inserting isn't implemented yet. It is, however, implemented in the DetailsView control.

    So I decided to tackle the problem this way:

    MyForm
    |
    -------> MyMultiView
    |
    -------------> View1 => MyGridView, MyInsertButton
    |
    -------------> View2 => MyDetailsView

    I have a form with a multiview. The multiview has two views, one with a Gridview and a button entitled 'Insert', the other with a DetailsView. For viewing/editing/deleting, I use the GridView. For insertion, I switch views to the DetailsView and change mode to insert. So far so good.

    Next, when the DetailsView changes modes (back to readonly), I have it switch back to the original view. Here's where the error occurs: any other action throws the following exception...

    Description:
    An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web
    request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and
    where it originated in the code.

    Exception Details:

    position of the controls added during the initial request.

    So -- where is the problem coming from? Am I getting the events screwed up? Is there something I'm forgetting? Or is there really something amiss..?

    Just in case, here's the code:

    Sub AddActivity_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
    AdminMultiView.ActiveViewIndex = 4
    DetailsView1.ChangeMode(DetailsViewMode.Insert)
    End Sub

    Sub DetailsView1_ModeChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
    If Not DetailsView1.CurrentMode = DetailsViewMode.Insert Then
    AdminMultiView.ActiveViewIndex = 0
    End If
    End Sub

  16. I am a sad n00b

    Date: 01/28/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: java, web

    Even worse, I have a simple question. u_u Anyway, I'm Chrystal, I love to web/graphic design. Currently I'm taking Web 2 and we are starting javascript... I am confused about something:

    I'm simply coping the book so I can see if I can even do that properly. It's a simple "enter your name" pop up script but it doesn't work like it should-- as followed by in the book:

    var name; // string entered by the user

    // read the name from the prompt box as a string
    name = window.prompt( "Please enter your name:", "" );

    document.writeIn( "Hello, " + name +
    ", welcome to blah!" );

    Now, that doesn't work. I took out the "In" in writeIn, and then it does work. Is my book wrong then? Or is there something I missing for it to work with the "document.writeIn" thing?

    Date: 01/13/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: java, web, google

    Hello. =)

    My friend has comissioned me to code his band's website, and I need to learn something new in order to do so..

    I'd like to learn how to do the kind of scrollbars where you put your mouse over an image (an arrow, usually) and the page starts to scroll down or back up just by your mouse hovering over the images.

    I've always wondered how this is done, and now I have a really good reason to learn - to help my friend.

    I would use google and try to find a site that explains and gives coding, but I don't know what to search for.. =\

    I'm pretty sure this is javascript we're talking about here, but if I'm wrong, I apologize..

  18. Dreamweaver MX 'Flashing' Problem?

    Date: 02/27/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: virus, web

    I'm using Dreamweaver on Windows XP SP2. I haven't used it on the machine for a while and I'm sure it worked fine before! When it's starting up and loading the windows the top third of the screen will flash. Basically a grey block without content appears over the window (in code or design mode) covering any code, the row of buttons and the blue program bar above flashes too. It repeats it if I alt-tab to another program and back. Most annoyingly, it will have that block flash whenever I click the mouse button anywhere near there.

    I've gone through the preferences but can't see anything obvious, searched the web, tried disabling the anitvirus/firewall stuff (AVG/Sygate Personal) but it hasn't helped. Anyone know how to fix it?

    Well, got my web server setup on my home computer, and it's a real convenience to have. So now I'm trying to setup an FTP directory on my machine so I can view and upload anything I need without remoting into the system. I'm not sure how to get the permissions set so you have to have a username and password, which is what I would like to do.

    Any suggestions?

  20. VERY Incorrect Statement!

    Date: 01/28/05 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    Earlier, I was going through "TotalFark" reading various posted links and ran across an article on "The Observer Online" site entitled, "Stop using Internet Explorer immediately".

    In the article, on page two, third paragraph down, is an outright incorrect statement:

    "Find a Web browser that suits your needs, it doesn't matter which browser you use, so long as it is not Internet Explorer (be careful though, some browsers, like Opera, use the Internet Explorer engine, and so should not be considered safe)."

    Needless to say, I fired off an email to correct them. Haven't heard back yet though. I think the articles author, Lance Gallop, must have Opera confused with the IE shells like Avant or Maxthon.
