1. n00b question

    Date: 03/22/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, html, web, seo

    Hi everyone,

    I have a PHP question, that I bet is pretty simple, but I only play around with the language to do a few website things.

    Recently, the webserver I am hosted on has upgraded to PHP5 and broken one of the main drivers of my website. I'm hoping you may be able to help.

    Explanation of problem: My website has an "index" table with links. When you click a link, PHP will go out, grab an HTML document, and insert that into a main table also on my index page. This is no longer working since the upgrade.

    My website is at www.erikwilson.net if you are curious. The links I am referring to are in the "Site Stuff" table.

    This all worked perfectly before the upgrade to PHP5.

    See anything that would cause this to fail in PHP5 or how I can fix it?

    ANY help would be much apprecaited.

    =========================================================================

    Example URL I'm trying to use:http://www.erikwilson.net/index.php?page=geocache

    Example Hyperlink that is calling the PHP:< a class="nav" href="index.php?page=geocache" onmouseover = "over_image('img29');" onmouseout = "off_image('img29')"> Geocaching</a>

    Actual PHP driving the page:
    <?php
    if ($page == '')
    {
    $page = "livejournal";
    $l = "?";
    }
    else
    {
    $page = "$page";
    }
    ?>

    Table the HTML will be intserted into:
    < table border="0" cellpadding="8" cellspacing="1" width="100%">
    < tr>
    < td bgcolor="ffffff">
    < ?php include("$page.shtml");?>
    < /td>
    < /tr>
    < /table>

    OK, I have been on a project where it I have been doing mostly front-end php while sending and recieving data in arrays with an API...

    Now the API people are saying "We will pass the templates as serialized PHP objects..."

    I am really scratching my head here. It sounds like he wants to send the entire php file that makes a web page as a serialized object... Before all I had to do was format an array. I am trying to arrange a confrence call to s I can understand this. (I am an not a PHP expert and I think they are talking above my head.)

    In the meantime, what can you tell me about the function serialize()? The example in the manual seems very incomplete and I need to pick this up quick.

    This week I got to attended the Computer in Libraries 2006 conference by InfoToday in DC. I shortly realized that I am truly a geek because I work with computers in a library. :oP

    Here is a geeky link for you all to try curtsey of the Computer in Libraries conference. A french company called Exalead as created an amazing search engine that uses intutive thinking. Which means if you enter the word or phrase it will give you a range for related topics, then you can sort them based on type of file and/or catergory the website is listed under. My favorite features are the Phonetic search (sense I am a HORRIBLE speller) and the quick view/thumbnail of the website (excellent for the visual memory). When you click on the webpage it will give you a quick view of the page, then show you where all the words from your search are in the page. EXCELLENT tool! Seriously. Check it out.

    Unfortunately, you only have the web based search, but it can be used for your computer and network drives. Excellent neat tool.

    Hi All..
    I'm working on a script that will allow admins on my website to update events.
    Basically what will happen (if I can get this to work) is the user will use some checkboxes on
    page1 that will submit the id#'s to page2. I'm streaming the id#'s into page2 as an array, where the information will be edited, and then submitted as an UPDATE statement to the database in page3 (I've confirmed the values are transmitting)

    The problem is on page 2, where the data should get called, I'm getting an error:

  11. Encryption questions....

    Date: 03/27/06 (Algorithms)    Keywords: software, database, asp, security, web

    Hello

    I am a software engineer in MA for a small internet company. Currently I am working on a webservices API our product and have been struggling with the authentication model. I read around and found an article that talked about WSSE authentication This seems relatively easy to implement and I kind of have a mock demo set up, but there is a problem with my demo, that I am not sure how to fix, as I am not a cryptologist and though I use crypt() and know how to compare a plain text password to a crypt encrypted password, more advance topics are beyond me. So this is my problem I will refer to the ideas in the article so I recommend you giving it a quick read.

    In the artcle it discusses creating a "password digest" using a "Created Date" a "nonce" and the "password string". as a Base64 encoded sha1 string(i'll probably ise md5). the sha1 string is "nonce"+"created date"+"password string". They then pass the nonce and create date in the header and assume that you have the password on the other end and can piece it back together creating another sha1 string to compare it too and verify authentication.

    I have a test ap, and here is the problem problem I am running into. Say I have my api, and I have a company writing an app to use it. I tell them to use the above method and to use crypt to create their password string from their user inputed password. I get their data parse the headers and have the 3 aspects. I decode the base64 string to the sha1 string, but when I compare them it fails. The problem being that they are not encrypted with the same salt when crypt was used. Therefore the encrypted password they put in their string is different than the encrypted version in my database. This can be fixed if they know my salt, but that's a security risk. So I am not sure how to get around this problem.

    Suggestions?

  12. Trade show ideas?

    Date: 03/27/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I'm going to be having a booth at a Chamber B2B expo later this week and it's important that I make a good impression. Here's what I already have:

    * have booth space already, a 42" plasma TV with Flash presentation that will run to catch the eye as people walk by

    * have tumblers and pens and t-shirts and bags

    * have a banner 3' x 5' with company name and colorful (yet muted) background

    What I need to figure out is how to make things a little more interactive and cause a buzz. Having a large screen with a presentation will get the eye-catching factor but what will get them to come closer and stay?

    I have 25 travel tumblers and 50 t-shirts and don't want to just hand them out. Thoughts on how to do some sort of game to get them to play to "earn" their prize while getting their contact info?

    The main concern is that I moved here 5 months ago but have had business for 3 years and have been designing web sites since 1994. There's 2 major web design companies here that everyone knows of, but I want to be thought of being on their level and make people realize that there is a choice in town. Unlike the other companies, I just stick to web design, development and marketing. The others also dabble in video production, audio production, cd roms, etc.

    Any ideas or suggestions on things to do would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Chris

  14. Looking for a Good Contact Form Script

    Date: 03/27/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, spam

    I'm pretty new to PHP, meaning I stick to scripts that other people write :P

    Anyway, I'm using a PHP script for a contact form on my website. However, I sometimes get emails from various non-existing email addresses on my domain, so I'm thinking that spammers are using my contact form to send out spam :(

    Does anyone know of a contact form script that prevents spammers from doing that? Preferably a script that allows me to choose which fields are required and which aren't and also makes sure that whatever is entered in the email field actually contains the @ sign.

    Hope I explained it well enough and that someone out there is able to help. Because I would hate to think that my domain is being used to email spam :[

  16. redirecting a missing file without using .htaccess

    Date: 03/27/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, xml, web

    So for the website I work on, a new blog is up that replaces the old one. Some outside-my-control websites previously referenced the atom.xml file on the old website, but since the address for the new atom.xml is totally different, i want all the people trying to reference the old xml file to be redirected to the new one instead. the only major problem is that because i'm using Y!SB (ps: boo), i can't use any .htaccess files.

    when i wanted to redirect something before, i would use some php (http://mag1.olivesoftware.com/ActiveMagazine/welcome/plm/plenty.asp");?>), but since i'm now trying to redirect an xml file and not a php one, i sadly can't do that.

    so how do i redirect something while being unable to use .htaccess?

  18. Scrolling...

    Date: 03/27/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Situation: I'm writing a webpage that will be a report. The basic structure of the report can be seen in example1.jpg of the file linked below. The request is to have the two sections I've put a red box around scroll when there is too much data in those sections. (Everthing should always fit on one page and the whole page should never scroll - at any resolution).

    I tried using an iframe and that ended miserably. It was also too complicated. So I tried CSS scrolling (using the overflow parameter). My results are seen in example2.jpg. Note that I only added the DIV to the first section, leaving the second section alone. I did this so you could see the difference. In the top section, the columns are now not aligned with their column title line. (See red arrows). I think this is because of the presence of the scrollbar.

    Problem: I need the columns to line up - whether the scroll bar is there or not. (There could be as little as 1 record in the section, in which case no scroll bar should be present.)

    Ideally, I'd like the scroll bar to appear outside of the table as seen in blue box on the second section. (That scroll bar was cut and pasted there, it's not part of the code or anything. Just an example).

    Can someone save me, please?

    You can find the files (And the HTML code) here.

    Thanks!

  20. Site Design Pricing for Friends (or Family)

    Date: 03/28/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I've read previous discussions here about web design pricing, but I don't recall specific details. I have a kind of touchy situation here and thought I'd throw it up for discussion.

    I'm doing a site for an old friend. He owns a photo lab and also shoots weddings and events. Phase one of the site will be around 18 pages, plus two or three galleries. The focus will be on the lab services with an improved section for his photography work. I want to be fair and generous, but I also don't want to under bid based on the time I have to spend on it.

    My initial estimate was around $600, with $300 to be paid as a deposit and $300 due upon completion. I'm already doing a customer analysis, site map and estimate for free.

    So the questions are:

    How much would you charge a client for a site this size? (18 pages, 2 galleries, other issues yet to be determined.)

    How can I balance giving him the "friends and family" discount without a.) Under billing for my time or b.)Offending him by overcharging?

    How much of a discount do you give to friends and family?
