1. Drop Down Information

    Date: 04/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm looking for a way to achieve a certain effect on my site but I have no idea where to go for a basic code I can alter. I want a list on my site of different names and when you click on a name the list drops down and information is presented under the name that was clicked. Since I know my explanation is bad I'll try and write it out:

    Here is the list
    Australia
    Japan
    Argentina
    China

    Then when you click on a link it looks something like this
    Australia
    Japan
    Japan is a cool country and all that stuff. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information.Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information. Information.
    Argentina
    China

    I guess what want is sort of similar to a drop down box but different? I've looked at a number of different sites with drop down menu codes and none of them seem to have exactly what I'm looking for. If anyone can help or direct me to a site to help I would appreciate it. Thank you!

  2. Link colours

    Date: 04/28/07     Keywords: css, html, web

    Good morning everyone!

    I still learning web, and am having a little trouble with my link colours.

    I'm working with a limited palette on my friend's website (initial pages can be seen at http://www.rgbcmyk.ca/pages/pf_imgrtch.html) and am having a little trouble getting the colour designated in my site-wide CSS stylesheet to stick. Each page also has it's own style sheet, for positioning page specific items. (yes, I'm going all out with the CSS - needed to handle some tight image and type placements on some pages that you don't see yet)

    It _should_ be 444444, 666666, 888888 and 000000, but it's reverting back to the default link colours (blue and purple)

    Any clues as to where I should be looking under the hood? Do I need to change anything in my CSS hierachy?

    Any help appreciated

  3. Meta Tags, website rankings, etc.

    Date: 04/27/07     Keywords: web, spam, google, ebay

    Greetings all!

    It's been awhile since I was asked / contracted to work on a website, and as I'm brushing up on my skills I'm wondering if any new techniques had come about for improving website rankings.

    I'm well aware of paying for a service to submit them, or the various spamming of your site or hiding hidden keywords on your pages to trick the engines. I know, for example, google has their own proprietary spidering system that is kept under wraps, so no one really knows how to optimize for it.

    In the past, I simply had the basic meta keywords and meta description in the header of each page, then manually submitted the main site page to the search engines.

    However, I'm finding some newer (larger) sites don't have any meta tags in their header at all!

    For example, ebay.com has meta keyword tags, wikipedia.com does not.

    I was curious what techniques you used to optimize and boost rankings.

    Thanks all!

  4. colors

    Date: 04/27/07     Keywords: browser, html, web

    I'm having a color problem on my new html web page design.

    I'm using Dreamweaver. I chose my text, link and visited link colors. I loaded the page, and the link color displays wrong. Instead of the light purple color I picked from the "System Color Picker," I get some default-looking blue. But only on the borders of pictures that were links, not on text. And not in all browsers. So I remake the page from scratch, thinking maybe it's a glitch, and choose some new colors that look similar. When I load the page, none of the colors come in right. They all look like defaults - text is black, links are blue, v-links are purple.

    Can someone tell me what's going on here?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. script that generates relative URLs?

    Date: 04/26/07     Keywords: php, web, google

    so this movable type comments thing i am trying to tweak, i made some progress. hopefully someone can help me overcome this (hopefully last) hurdle.

    the way Comments.pm works in Movable Type is that when it gets a value that is equal to 1, it will redirect the user to the permalink for that specific entry. when the value does not equal 1, it will redirect them to the static URL of the website + the value sent to it.

    aka: if i set the value as /hello.php, the redirect will go to website.com/hello.php

    now, the comment form that will include the value is going to be an .inc file that displays on every page, and when the comment is entered, i want them to return to that page where they made it. this means i want the value to be equal to the relative URL where they came from. is there a way to do this with php?

    thanks in advance and +1000 internets if anyone can figure this out for me. i'm google searching away as it is right now.

  6. javascript + css to scroll...

    Date: 04/26/07     Keywords: css, java

    Hey guys.

    I'm working on an online portfolio and have a sidebar that will list updates (newest at the top). I want the bar to remain a constant size but be scrollable, without having the hideous scrollbars. Is there a way to add buttons in another div that control the scrolling of the sidebar (which is in its own div)?

    I'm familiar with css and know only a little bit of javascript (which I'm guessing will be key), so I'll need as much guidance as possible.

    Thanks so much!

  7. tweaking movable type

    Date: 04/25/07     Keywords: no keywords

    If anyone can help me out, I'd definitely appreciate it, as I know nothing about perl (case in point: this IS perl, right?).

    so for mt-comments.cgi, the script is set up so that when someone posts a comment, it takes them to that specific entry's page down to where the comments start. this is normally not a big deal because the only place with said comments field are those individual pages, except in this specific case.

    i want to use the comments system in MT to set up a shoutboard where people can just post comments or something that then show up instantly in that column. when they make the comment, i want the script to return them to the page where they made it. so if someone decides to post from page X, i want them to be sent back to page X after it is processed, and be sent to page Y if they posted from page Y. Sadly, I don't know the coding to back this up. Any advice?

    return $app->redirect($comment_link);

  8. adding blog-type functionality

    Date: 04/25/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi all,

    I've been trying to add Wordpress to my existing site, but I'm not understanding how this should work. The default installation has been successfully installed, but I want to integrate the blog posts into my established site. Basically, I have a main content div that I want Wordpress to somehow populate with postings. Does anyone have experience working with Wordpress, or have an alternate product they would recommend for this?

    Thanks :)

  10. Virus software

    Date: 04/23/07     Keywords: software, browser, security, virus, antivirus, web, microsoft

    So... This isn't a web design question, but I'm clueless when it comes to most Microsoft applications. I was hoping someone here might have some ideas for me.

    I go to a local youth center once a week to work on their computers. It's a bit of a grassroots, low-budget project, and they've pieced together a set of machines running on XP. They're not networked, but they have internet connections. They don't have any security software built in, so a few of the computers are so choked up with junk that they're barely usable. When I tried to clean them up, I realized I'd probably have to download any security programs on my own computer and install them on CD since the browsers won't work anymore.

    My question is:

    What would you do in this situation? Money is an issue since it's a youth center. I can't use the browsers. Would you uninstall the browsers? Or will some antivirus software clean everything automatically? Any other issues that might come up in the process? What application would you choose?

    Thanks much!

  12. Still New To This

    Date: 04/23/07     Keywords: no keywords

    http://www.imaginewith.com/ <- that's my site.

    I don't know why my navigation image is not in place, I'm not sure what to do, I tried editing the css, but I couldn't figure it out. It looks fine in Dreamweaver, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

    I also tried embedding a little flash thing for the first time with Dreamweaver, that's wrong, but I guess I can just look that up in my Dreamweaver for dummies book.

    One last thing, is there any way I can get the footer to not have that padding or margin on each side of it that I see?

    Thanks guys!!!!

    edit: I GOT MY image aligned (at least in FF, haven't checked in anything else) - but my navigation is still not showing up white. I'm currently trying to fix the problem.

    re-edit: urgh, my image is equally off in IE and FF. Do I add an inner container or something and set the padding and margins to 0? Would that fix things? O_O

  13. Need Guru help

    Date: 04/20/07     Keywords: php

    Dearest Guru, help dummy.

    There is a lot of tutorials (exactly, a clone of single one) how to build a tree on PHP, but I did't found any useful info about doing same on Perl.

    The base is primitive - id, parent_id, title, ..., ..., ...

    How to? I thought about inset queries, but got stuck about that if you declare handle $sth=$dbh->prepare"SELECT..." once and use $sth->execute, then until while (@row=$sth->fetchrow_array) is finished, it's useless for a secondary time, so there is no sense at SELECT in SELECT. Another way - write every cycle manualy - $sth1, $sth2, $sth3, but in this case amount of levels is strictly limited, construction is quite irrational. Is there any time-proved solutions?

    Guru, help.

    I'm bidding on a project that will need a database.

    The prospective client wants to have a catalog (no ordering) for each corporate customer. The database should be easy for the client to update via a web browser. Each customer will have a unique login and password.

    The database will run on a Windows 2003 server.

    Please contact me if interested so I can get some basic ideas on what's involved so I can put into a proposal for the client. Need to get the proposal going as soon as possible.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Date: 04/19/07     Keywords: css, html

    I'm creating the html code (and linked images) for an email e-newsletter. It contains 15 text links. I want these links to be black type with no underlines. I had thought I could do this using some CSS coding, but I'm not sure I could use that on code being sent via email.

    I've managed to make the text black using color="black" in the font tag. But I haven't been able to remove the blue underline. I'd even be happy just making the underline black.

    Thanks!

  17. Footer Issues along with Div

    Date: 04/17/07     Keywords: asp, web

    Ok, I'm such a newbie to this, it's embarrassing to post. I'm trying to teach myself web design. I can hand code a REALLY simple page, but I'm trying to learn Dreamweaver. I am only familiar with divs, so when I figured out how to do that with Dreamweaver (today) I got all excited. I created my first craptastic web site with it. It's SO basic, it's pathetic, and I still couldn't even get my footer to show up.

    I was just wondering if someone could breeze through my codes and take a peek to see if I handled my divs correctly, or if I have too many (which I suspect I might) - and, I don't know what the hell I'm doing with position: absolute or relative... absolute seems to connect the entire page to that one spot, then I'm forever absoluting all other aspects of the layout. I suspect that's the error that's causing my footer not to show.

    If this is not in the correct community (because most people seem to know what they are doing here) I'd appreciate a pointed finger on where to go.

  18. How do I determine the age of a website?

    Date: 04/17/07     Keywords: web, google

    As a volunteer project for my daughter's daycare centre, I'm doing some research into what constitutes good design for daycare websites. One of Google's first picks yielded this (obviously outdated) page on the subject. But despite the copyright notice stating 2004 (which MUST be a renewal -- this site looks circa 1998 to me), is there a way to definitively determine the creation date of a given web page?

    I viewed the source for the page but didn't see anything obvious. Is there a way to discover the actual date stamp of a given web page?

    By the way, if anyone here has any experience with developing (or seeing) a well-designed daycare website, please do reply with sample links, won't you? Looks like we're going to be doing a lot of our own creative, here. (Even with the depth provided on this page of Top 100 Preschool Sites...)

    Thanks in advance.

    Dustin

    Edit: I had to add this site for further breadth to my examples. Make sure your speakers are on for the MIDI magic...

  19. trying to get drop menu on top...

    Date: 04/16/07     Keywords: html

    Hey guys,

    I am developing a horizontal drop menu that is positioned above an image banner. I have almost everything working the way I want, but the problem is that the drop menus appear behind the image. I have tried adding z-index, but it is not helping. Absolute positioning has it appear above as desired, but it throws the positioning off.

    /*
    dl, dt, dd, ul, li {
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    list-style-type: none;
    }

    #menu {
    float:right;
    height: 45px;
    padding: 70px 25px 0 0;
    background: url(images/img3.gif) no-repeat right top;
    }

    #menu dl {
    float: left;
    width: 6em;
    margin: 0 2px;
    }

    #menu dt {
    cursor: pointer;
    text-align: center;
    font-weight: bold;
    background:;
    border: 1px solid #eee;
    }

    #menu dd {
    border:;
    }

    #menu li {
    display: inline;
    text-align: center;
    background:;
    }

    #menu li a, #menu dt a {
    color: #000;
    text-decoration: none;
    display: block;
    height: 100%;
    border: 0 none;
    }

    #menu li a:hover, #menu dt a:hover {
    background: #eee;
    }

    and the banner (actual image is placed in html):

    #splash {
    width: 877px;
    height: 200px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    background: url(images/img5.gif) repeat-x left bottom;
    border-right: 20px solid #FFFFFF;
    border-left: 20px solid #FFFFFF;
    }
    */

    Any ideas? Thanks!
