Hello everyone! I'm new to this community. I love website designing and have been designing sites for about nine years now. I am completely self-taught in my website design and really love doing it. As a result I am highly considering turning my love for design into a career. I am currently in college and and very unsure where to start. I was wondering if anyone can just give me a feel of what I should be going into to or any advise of what to take or not take. I want to learn a lot more about design and how to use things like Java, Flash, and improve the knowledge I already have so I can not only make my personal site better but use it in my possible career. I was also wonder how the job market for a website designer is and what the work is like. And, finally, if anyone wants to check out my personal site you can visit it here and please tell me what you think. Thank you!

I thought I'd post this fab little app for those pc users who are looking to make quick, easy screen caps. I love it and can't imagine life without it. you can take pics of all or part of the screen, menus, etc. and it has a bunch of other cool features. best of all, it's free! but if you like it, I urge you to make a donation to the guy who made it. he totally deserves it!

  4. hit counters

    Date: 05/14/06     Keywords: php, web

I want to put hit counters on my pages and I've found a lot of websites that offer free counters but I'll admit I'm being rather picky about the image of the counter. I just don't like the counters offered and a lot of websites seem to offer the same images for their counters.

This site: http://hellocounter.com/index.php lets you provide your own images but when I try to use their service it doesn't let me select the picture I uploaded.

Anyone know of another website that offers hit counters while letting you provide your own image, or know the code to make your own hit counter?

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

  7. frames

    Date: 05/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

im using frames in dreamweaver 8. ive got 3 frames: left, bottom and center/main. im trying to target my links in the left frame. the thing is when i click a link in the left frame, i want the content in the center AND bottom frames to change. is there a way to make that happen? i only know how to make content in one frame change when you click a link.

basically i want to change the words that will be in the bottom frame every time the content in the center frame changes because they correspond to eachother.

  11. help, please

    Date: 05/08/06     Keywords: java

hi everyone, i have been a member of this community before but never really posted anything.. so, here it goes:

i'm working on a site for a greenhouse. i've used dreamweaver, photoshop, and image ready to do the site, with the exception of the javascript rollovers that i did by hand.. the layout is pretty much set (per crits from the folks at '[info]'graphicdesign and my client) but i'm running into problems with the frames.. i don't know if i'm doing anything right as far as what is technically the industry standard -- i'm using a table for the images and div layers and iframes for the text boxes.. the site doesn't quite work in IE but does just fine in firefox and safari

the problem i'm having is the positioning with the boxes (iframes).. i don't know what else to do/use. the boxes are fixed but the background images move when the window is resized.. so, what i'm asking is: what kind of coding should i be using here? i am open for pretty much anything

the site: http://www.nerdydeeds.com/goodnessgrows (this will be goodnessgrowslandscaping.net in the near future)

  12. form disrupting css

Date: 05/07/06     Keywords: php, css, html

I'm probably overlooking something obvious, but I've been staring at this so long I can't think properly.

I'm having an issue with an html form processed by php. When all fields are filled in and the "success" message appears, there's no problem, but when there's an error, the background gets messed up.

If someone has a moment, can you please use this form and fill it in completely (use fake info, I don't care) and then try it again leaving a field blank and see the resulting problem... The css is available here. (Beware, it's kind of a mess at this point.)

Please don't bother to complain about the design... it's what my client wants.

    Thanks in advance!

*edited to add* This seems to be an issue in FF and Opera thus far, not IE

*edited again to add* The issue is related to the exit command in my php conditionals, so it's not getting to the closing div tags :)

  13. great networking tool

    Date: 05/05/06     Keywords: no keywords

I just wanted to recommend this site to all you folks. it's a social networking site, only it's for business/employment contacts. you sign up, get your colleagues to sign up, they hook you up with others in your industry, etc etc. you can also get endorsements from past co-workers/employers/clients that help boost your profile to prospective clients/employers.

I just signed up yesterday and already I'm hooked up with a few people I used to work with who I'd forgotten existed. as someone who occasionally hires freelancers it's definitely a tool I'm glad to have, plus it's a great way to promote yourself and back it up with actual references that everyone can see.

think of it as an interactive resume complete with built in ratings system.

  14. Dynamically-generated images

    Date: 05/05/06     Keywords: database, web

I'm looking for information on dynamically-generated server-side images. For example, at a set interval, a program on my webserver could read some data from a database, and create a small image that contains this information, laid out all nice and neat.

I've browsed around for some information, but I can't seem to find any simple tutorials. How would I go about doing something like this? What languages should/could I use? Would I be able to assemble larger images from a composite of smaller images, or would I have to hard-code the entire image from hand?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  15. Help?

    Date: 05/04/06     Keywords: asp

Hi there. I am looking for some help in configuring password protected pages. I have a general site that has a member's only section and I need for only members to be allowed in with a username and password. I've been looking for ASP tutorials and Flash and so far the only thing that I've managed to understand is the Flash coding but I don't want to have to resort to that right now. I want it to be as simple as possible. So, if you can, please let me know if you can help!

  16. when to say no

    Date: 05/03/06     Keywords: no keywords

I found this article interesting, especially since this morning I turned down a job based on the fact that I have to respect my client & their business in order to do a great job for them.

Here is what Bruce Mau has to say on saying no.

Sidebar: When to Say No to a Client

Bruce Mau Design Inc. is almost entirely free of regimentation. Its managers do have one system, though, which they use to decide whether to take on a project. "Our work defines who we are, so we like to choose our projects in a considered way," says Bruce Mau. Below, he describes his "Four Ps" checklist.
    1. People: "Every project boils down to spending time with the client. If its people are good, you can overcome any problem. If they're bad, every problem will seem twice as big."
    2. Project: "Is the project adventurous? Would it provide new opportunities for learning?" BMD doesn't do any marketing, so its body of work attracts new clients. Knowing that, Mau and his team are reluctant to do work in industries or domains that they think are creative dead ends.
    3. Profit: "We need to make money on everything that we do in order to sustain the business, whether it's a project for an art gallery or a multinational corporation."
    4. Plate: "How much do we have on our plate?" BMD has only 20 full-time employees, and a tight network of freelancers and contractors. Mau is wary of trying to expand the size of his firm too quickly; he thinks carefully about how new work will affect the group.

  17. design rates

    Date: 05/03/06     Keywords: web

    Hello all,

I just moved to the Bay Area and I wanted to know what the going rates are for web design. I've been working in house for a company for a long time and am getting back to freelancing and I have no idea what hourly or per page rates are anymore. Though I don't need it at the moment, print graphic design and layout rates would be useful, too. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!

  18. FTP access

    Date: 05/02/06     Keywords: web

This isn't so much web design related as much as data transfer... I'm trying to figure out the best way to solve this issue.

My client has a PC with a few hundred scanned photos on it that need to make their way to my machine. I tried the obvious, burning the files onto a CD, but my mac won't read the CDs that their PC burns no matter what the settings are.

My two ideas are 1) I can download an FTP client on their computer to get the photos to my server and then on to my mac, or 2) there must be some way to connect the two machines, via USB or Firewire?

Any insight on either of these methods would be super helpful. I'd much rather not download a new program onto their computer since they're luddites and a little scared by things like that.

Can anyone recommend a chatroom platform that comes as freeware and can be hosted from your own personal domain?

I've never chatted, much myself and I've been looking around for a good platform for the last three days and I haven't seen anything that looks reliable, yet.
