Messenger issues
Date: 12/22/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, spyware, yahoo
Hello dear community who has helped me out a lot by now.
I've great issues with web messengers like MSn, Yahoo-Messenger and the newer versions of AIM.
They all refuse to connect (basically right away as if they were blocked), only an older version of AIM can connect, the newer verions which are available for download everywhere aren't working.
I'm using the Windows firewall on Windows XP and suspected it to be the one at fault first but I checked it and appearently that is not the problem here as I've put the msn and aim exes on the list to be not blocked, still not working.
Before I've been running out of my Norton trial I've been using their firewall and the newer AIm version which refuses to work now worked perfectly fine then (this is why I assumed Windows firewall right away)
I'm also using AVG antivirus (though not the firewall because it's not part of the free version appearently?) and Spyware doctor, if this has any revelance to what's happening here.
How can this be fixed?

OpenID 2.0 and Yahoo: The security angle
Date: 01/17/08
(Security) Keywords: security, yahoo
Yahoo is supporting OpenID 2.0 and could triple the number of accounts in the single sign-on framework. I posted the details on Between the Lines and Techmeme has more, but after some initial enthusiasm I started thinking out loud about security. Yahoo noted that...

Opera as non-SSL e-mail client
Date: 01/18/08
(Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, database, web, yahoo
Ever since I first installed Opera I've used it as my default e-mail client as well as my default browser, but recently I had to switch ISPs to (ick) AT&T Yahoo, and their e-mail service requires e-mail clients to be SSL compliant, while Opera uses TLS instead (oh, the curse of being ahead of the curve!) Ideally, there'd be a way I could continue to use Opera as my e-mail client, but while I've heard that TLS can transform itself into SSL3 if necessary, I'm utterly non-geek and would have no idea how to make it do this.
I could use SSL-compliant Mozilla Thunderbird, but, while it's not the abomination Outlook Express is, I've tried it before and found it a bit clunky, and annoying to configure, so I would only use it as a last resort.
Another alternative I've found would be to try an e-mail client called Courier which, while not SSL compliant itself, can be configured to work with an open source program called Stunnel which, as I understand it (meaning very, very dimly), would punk Yahoo's POP and SMTP servers and make them think I was using an SSL compliant e-mail client. I do like the description Courier gives of itself, but I've not yet tried it so I don't know if I'd really find it usable.
Why, you may be asking, would I not simply use Stunnel with Opera directly instead of going through Courier? Well, I would, but I can't find anything on Opera's website (or on Stunnel's website) saying that Opera is compatible with Stunnel... but there's a nice little section of the Opera database that tells how to configure Opera to work with Courier, and a nice (though not so little) section on Courier's website that tells how to configure Courier for use with Stunnel. In other words, if I run as fast as I can I might be able to stay somewhere in the vicinity of the same place.
Anyway, what I'd like to know is:
1) Has anybody ever used Stunnel (or maybe something like it) with Opera and, if so, did disaster ensue?
2) Has anybody ever used Courier, with or without Opera and, if so, is Courier as good as it looks from its self-description?
3) Has anybody got a suggestion for any other alternatives, so I don't end up having to use Thudderbird?
(Cross posted to my journal.)

SEO underscores vs hyphens.
Date: 01/26/08
(Web Development) Keywords: web, seo, yahoo, google
I am working on a website, and trying to define our URL structure for the best SEO.
Let's say we have a list of 100 products etc... We want our urls to look something like.
http://www.foo.bar/products/productName
Some of the product names have hyphens in them others don't
"Bowl-o-soup with Rice"
"Big Screen TV"
"Xbox 360"
"Hoola-Hoop"
Now I know that until last year Google didn't parse underscores for key words, but that has changed, but I have been unable to find out if Yahoo, MSN and ASK parse underscores for key words. Any help into this area would be great. Links specifically that I could show the partners on this project so that we can make our decision.
Thansk.

Another WordPress Comment Hyperlinking Bug

(Java Web) Keywords: yahoo, google
Type the following as a WordPress comment and see the fun:
<a href="/go.php?http://www.google.com/" rel="nofollow">This is www.yahoo.com link</a>
This should ideally cause the whole phrase (This is www.yahoo.com link) to be hyperlinked and pointing to google.com. Unfortunately WordPress sees it as two links and a plain word:
“This is” is hyperlinked to www.google.com
“www.yahoo.com” is hyperlinked to www.yahoo.com
“link” is not [...]

select checkbox or select row
Date: 02/08/08
(Asp Dot Net) Keywords: database, yahoo
I need a grid where I can select a checkbox or select everything else in the row.
So I could select the checkbox and hit the delete button and the row is deleted in the database. Or I could click on one of the other columns in the row and the item is opened in another page. (Kinda the way Yahoo Mail works)
Does anyone know if that is possible ? (And have you seen an example if it is ?)
