1. Can you view Mac layout on a PC?

Date: 11/28/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html, web

I just got done designing a small website for a client. Everything looks good on my PC platform using all major browsers. However, he uses a Mac and just sent me an email saying some of the images aren't loading and some of them are being cut-off on the right hand side. This is the page in question: http://www.michaelhargrave.com/gallery.html

    I have two questions:
    1. As a PC user, is there any way to see what a website will look like on a MAC platform, i.e. a virtual website or something?
    2. If you're on MAC and can see the problem can you recommend how to fix it since I can't see for myself?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Javascript and CSS - hiding elements

Date: 11/28/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, html

Spent some time looking for this last night, but right now I have to get another function working.

When hiding elements with "inline" and "none", the script I normally use requires
    style="display:inline;" in the element.

However, the elements I am hiding this time are HTML table cells. Having the style tag seems to mess up the way it draws on FIreFox.

Is there a way to switch classes and hide elements? Seems that if I use a class instead of style it draws nicely.

This is the code I have now, but it doesnt seem to work - but there are no JS errors.
    document.getElementById(LayerName).className = "layershow";

    Solution:
Even though we got the right code for using classes, ultimately I had to go back to the style tag because of browser draw issues. using the style tag on a nested div tag seems to work.

  6. Refreshing pages from saved session

Date: 11/30/05 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser

Please advise, is there an option to refresh pages of a session that is opened on browser start-up? I want to see my LJ Friends page refreshed, not the way I left it yesterday! Please don’t tell me to refresh the page: should I also refresh other 9 pages? Some monkey business… Changing Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> History -> Cache option to Always or Every 5 min hasn’t help.

In an ideal situation I’d like to control page by page for each saved session, whether I want it refreshed every time session is loaded or displayed from cache.

Opera version 8.50 Russian. I have browsed through the FAQ, KB but with no success.

    Thanks in advance!

  7. New Firefox Security Vulnerability

Date: 12/08/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, java, security, virus, linux

News of a new security vulnerability has been posted for Firefox 1.5 (my testing confirms it also affects Firefox 1.0.7) that allows for Denial of Service or potentially arbitrary code execution. It has to do with a buffer overflow in the parsing of history.dat, which stores browser history.

Basically, if you visit a malcious site using this vulnerability, the next time you try to start Firefox it will run the malicious code, which could be as minor as causing Firefox not to work (such as the Proof of Concept) or as serious as executing arbitrary code (i.e. it could install a virus or other malware). Fortunately, there is a simple workaround: just set Firefox to keep browser history for 0 (zero) days, essentially setting it not to keep history, and then restart Firefox to make the change take effect. Note that disabling JavaScript DOES NOT mitigate this vulnerability; only disabling browser history does, since that prevents the creation of history.dat. Also note that the malcious code would run each time you attempt to start Firefox, until you delete history.dat from your profile folder.

I don't believe Mozilla has announced anything about this yet, but proof of concept code is available, and I confirmed with my own testing that it works as I described on both Mac OS X and Windows, using both Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 1.0.7, meaning that all versions are probably affected (or at least all recent versions).

Here are the steps to mitigate this vulnerability until a patch is released (for Firefox 1.5):

    1. Open Firefox Options (Tools->Options on Windows) or Preferences (Edit->Preferences on Linux, Firefox->Preferences on Mac OS X).
    2. Choose "Privacy" from the top button bar, and choose the "History" tab.
    3. Set "Remember visited pages for the last ____ days." to 0 (zero).
    4. On Windows, click OK to close the Options window. On Linux or Mac, simply close the Preferences window.
    5. Restart Firefox to make sure the setting takes effect.

The same steps apply to Firefox 1.0.x, it's just that the options/preferences window is different. Basically, for step 2 the "Privacy" button is on the left side button bar, and history is the top section on that pane.

More details for the technically minded...

  10. Picture code assistance

Date: 12/12/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, css, html, web

    Ok, why is this happening?

Not an expert here, and I know IE is the root of all HTML evil, but I don’t get it.
All images on my site have a code to be 50x50 pixels, unless they’re of a specific class. ( I use CSS to get this done)

Fire fox recognizes this, and is fine, displaying my pictures properly.
IE is a douch and only will size the special pics after a few refreshes.

    Arou?

Is there something in there that I have to put for the evil IE so that it will display properly the first frappin’ time or am I doomed to preface my site with a “Optimal goodness in any browser other than IE” statement?

Here’s the site: stephi’s screwed up place

    Thanks!

Date: 12/15/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

Hey all, I have a very basic question for you guys. I'm trying to change the IE browser options so that it doesn't keep track of the History. I tried going to TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS and changing the number of days IE keeps the history to "0 Days" but for some reason the History folder will still show all my visited sites. Is there some other way of doing this? I need to find out so I can save myself the embarassment of telling an older, clueless relative of mine that he should learn how to delete his pr0n.

  16. Safari table rendering

Date: 12/22/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser

I'm having a problem rendering tables in Safari. Check out the following site. In every browser I've tested besides Safari, the red blocks are correctly span about 75% of the table height and the "a" box is only at the very bottom (as you can clearly see it should be from the page source.) In safari, however, the red blocks get cut off right between the 9:00 and 9:30 division, and the "a" box takes up 50% of the table height. It seems like everything is forced into being the same height (rowspan) as the time boxes on the very left of the rows.

Any thoughts? Thanks very much guys.

  17. A discussion thread for you

Date: 12/23/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, css, google

    iFrames.

What do you think? Last time I remember hearing about them, they were supported only by IE, and were mostly pretty unstable. A quick google around tells me that they seem to be supported by most browsers now. Is that true?

What are your experiences? Are they stable, or do they fall apart at the slightest hint of incompatability? Are there any real features/benefits to using them over other methods? Do they manage to get over the disadvantages of frames, as they were intended to do, or do they create a whole new host of problems?

Personally, I'm probably going to stick to a nifty combination of CSS and SSI, but I'd still like to know whether iFrames are a viable option.

  18. Opera/Firefox slow, IE not???

Date: 12/26/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, spyware

I just reformatted, and I have AVG, MS Anti-Spyware.
Problem: Both Opera and Firefox load incredibly slowly, and surfing sites like LJ Friends list makes it CRAWL down the pages. IE runs full speed and is blowing them away. How can this be? What would cause my other browsers to slow down? It even takes time for them to load in the taskbar. I turned off AVG and MS AS, I turned off Windows firewall.

I've never experienced this before. TIA

  20. bookmark management help!

Date: 12/29/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, web, google

I would like to automatically update my homepage with a list of bookmarks that I find while I surf the net. It should be as simple as clicking a button on my browser such as "Link This!" whenever I find a webpage I like. And a window like this appears for me to add information:

Categories can be added and customized.

The link that is added will be automatically reflected on a webpage.

Does anyone know how this is accomplished? Or what should I google for more information? Is this PHP?

Many thanx for any help! :)

    Edit: Problem solved! Thank you!
