Odd issue with Firefox Crashing...
Date: 12/30/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web
As of three days ago, my firefox browser froze and crashed on me during some downloading of images from the web. Now whenever I try to save anything (of any file type) or select any of the options from the tools menu, etc, firefox crashes on me. I have tried uninstalling, restarted, reinstalling, checking for updates, etc. Nothing is fixing this issue and it is extremely frustrating.
Has anyone experienced such issues before or has heard of such problems and has any suggestions on how to rectify this problem?
Thanks,
A very frustratingly dependent firefox user.

measurements with CSS + preloading images
Date: 12/30/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, browser, css
so i see people using px, em, and so on. is there a 'better' one to use? i have a css/php layout set up, and it looks as i want it to in firefox and safari, but the measurements are a bit off in IE. is that a result of using a wrong measurement type or is that just another thing to be pissed off at IE over?
my other issue is that i have a css-based menu that swaps images on rollover. my only problem with it is that there's that moment where the rollover image loads up the first time each menu option is rolled over, causing the menu choice to just poof for a moment or two. i know that it's possible to display:none those things so they preload, but my only problem with that is that all those things show up on all text browsers like lynx. it's possible i'm just missing what i should be doing to make it not show up in an all-text browser as well, but i'm just wondering what options i have when it comes to preloading images that'll be used in a rollover menu.
the code itself looks like this:
< a id="home" href="index.php">< img src="menu/homeblank.gif" alt="HOME"/> </a>
while the css file has...
a img {height: 15px; border-width: 0; background: top left no-repeat;}
a#home img {background-image: url(menu/homeoff.gif);}
a#home:hover img {background-image: url(menu/homeon.gif);}

okay, why isn't this working (issue with an image and divs)
Date: 01/02/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css, web
so I think I've done a well enough job getting this website set up so it's table-free, w3c compliant, all-text browser, compliant, and so on, but there's one image that just screws the whole layout over when i put it in and i just CAN'T figure out why.
here's the layout without the image: link
here's the layout with the image: link
i'm not quite sure what is causing that one image to fudge up the whole layout. if it matters, the column on the left (with the magazine cover) is set to float and the right is the main part of that div (called container). you can view the css stuff here (link).
i am just unable to figure out what the heck is causing that one image to be so disasterous. if i try to give it more room, it doesn't care. if i try to make the margins smaller, it doesn't care. if i make the margins bigger, it doesn't care. i figured i can ask you guys since you might know what's wrong and that'll save me time cursing and randomly entering things to figure out what's what.
thanks in advance!
UPDATE: okay. that problem was fixed (link). now my big problem is bludgeoning IE to death so it works on those browsers. things are nearing perfection over in Safari and Firefox for OSX, but IE for OSX is giving me shit (like, the images aren't even showing up) and IE for windows has stuff being placed like the divs aren't sized properly.
ANOTHER UPDATE: since rotring had me reconsidering how i had the #left #right thing set up, a bit of testing made me realize i didn't even need the damn #right thing. so thanks for pointing out a float in a container in a container was a bit silly and a float in a container worked fine enough. :) i think things are looking a lot cleaner now in Firefox and Safari. turned out IE for OSX is just crap (as rotring mentioned) and shows things fine (sans things aligning properly... but it was mentioned in a previous post asking why that happend that IE stuff just hates following the same rules as everyone else). my only issue now is figuring out why it won't work right for IE for Windows.

Firefox Extension Issues
Date: 01/10/06
(Web Hosts) Keywords: browser, web
Not sure how many people use Firefox or the Web Developer Extension, but it seems there is a conflict with it somewhere. I noticed that Firefox was not loading when I tried to launch a new instance, however the process was listed in the Task Manager [and using about 53,000 K of memory]. Clicking links in pages resulted in no response from Firefox as well. I asked a friend who also uses FF and we compared our extensions, the two that we both have in common are:
-Tabbrowser Prefrences 1.2.8.8
-Forecastfox 0.8.2.5
Not sure if it is a conflict with one of these extensions, or just a bug with the Web Developer extension. I disabled the Web Developer extension, and everything is back to normal. but I thought I'd let people know incase they are having similar issues :D

Align Graphics Vertically
Date: 01/11/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser
If I create a single celled table on a page and tell it to be 100% height and 100% width and then center the graphic inside it should (in theory) stay exactly centered no matter what size the browser window, right? But the height attribute "100%" doesn't seem to be recognised by a whole bunch of browsers (it just defaults to the height of the graphic, pushing it to the top of the page), so how do I get the graphic to automatically center on the page? Is there a simple tag that will align a graphic on a page vertically without it being within a table cell?
Sorry if this is a really dumb question...but I can't seem to find a simple solution ;)

Novice Question here. All of the web pages I look at in my computers browsers (Internet Explorer and Mozzila Firefox) have always seemed too big when compared to other computers I’ve used. How does one shrink down all the pictures and graphics one is looking at, thus making the webpage look smaller. I can only change the size of the text at this point.

annoying problem with flash 8

I'm having a really annoying problem with macromedia flash 8. (Running win98 & IE 6.0):
I installed the flash 8 plugin, and my browser keeps flickering. I uninstall it, the flickering goes away, but now i'm prompted 800 times a day to re-install it whenever I go to a page that has any kind of flash.
I want to install it, but the "flickering" is really annoying .. it happens everytime I pass my mouseover a link or just when there is a flash on a page.
Any help will be appreciated!
thanks =)

Browser problem or code problem?
Date: 01/17/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, browser, database, sql
Ok, so I have the following code, meant to delete a category in a script I'm working on. It takes the category ID from the $_GET array, checks the database to make sure such a category ID exists, then deletes it if true or shows an error if false.
if ($_GET['categories'] == "deletecat") {
if (isset($_GET['delid'])) {
$idofd = cleaninput($_GET['delid'], 1);
$idofd = (int)$idofd;
$check_delete = mysql_fetch_assoc(mysql_query("SELECT * FROM table_cats WHERE cat_id = '" . $idofd . "' LIMIT 1", $connect));
if (empty($check_delete)) {
echo "Error: There is no category with the ID number " . $idofd . ".
";
}
else {
$deletecateg = mysql_query("DELETE FROM table_cats WHERE cat_id = '" . $idofd . "' LIMIT 1", $connect);
if ($deletecateg) {
echo "The category was successfully deleted.
Go back
";
}
else {
echo "The category could not be deleted: " . mysql_error($connect) . "
";
}
}
}
else {
echo "Error: No category selected for deletion.
";
}
}
When I execute this code, Firefox will always tell me that there is no category with the ID number specified, even when it does exist - however it will delete the category anyway. Opera does things correctly - a category is selected for deletion and the success message is shown.
Is this a browser problem or a code problem? I have tried all sorts of different solutions, originally the code was as such:
if (!empty($check_delete)) {
// delete the category
}
else {
// display error
}
However I switched it around thinking that maybe Firefox was taking too long to check the category and then finding it deleted or something like that.
I haven't been able to test this in IE yet, but I have a feeling it might work, like it did in Opera. So... any ideas as to why it's not working in Firefox?
Specs: PHP 5.0.5/MySQL 5.0.15 running on Windows XP (local testing server); Firefox 1.5
Thanks in advance.
PS: First post to this community! *Bows low*
Edit: Solved! Firefox didn't like having a button in the form field used to get the delete ID (it's a "get" method form). Changed it to a normal link and everything now seems to be working as it should. :)
