LJ and various Opera versions
Date: 03/24/06
(Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, css
This is an attempt to be helpful, in case someone comes to this community looking for help on Opera+LJ. Also because these questions come up in LiveJournal support and I'm trying to save the trouble from both users and volunteers. ;)
I'm sure many Opera users have noticed that various versions of Opera have various bigger or smaller issues with commenting on LiveJournal. Some of these you can fix, some you can't.
Opera 7.x cannot use LJ quickreply, that is, the comment box opened directly under whatever you are replying to. This is not fixable, because 7.x doesn't support the necessary JS. LJ will fall back to normal comment behavior and open a new page.
Opera 8.x cannot use LJ quickreply either, but it can be fixed with this UserJS file. It's caused by a bug in Opera itself. LJ will fall back to normal comment behavior and open a new page without the UserJS file.
Opera 9tp1 cannot use quickreply, because the devs apparently broke something else while fixing the bug. ;) I have not tried this version myself, but from what I've gathered, when attempting to use quickreply you get the error "Unknown journal". Using the aforementioned UserJS script should fix quickreply, and also disabling quickreply entirely should cause permanent fallback to normal comment behavior and fix the problem. (To disable quickreply, enter set disable_quickreply 1
in the Admin Console while logged in.)
Opera 9tp2 fixed all these issues and quickreply should function correctly out-of-the-box.
I do not know the status of weekly builds on this issue.
As for some other problems on LJ...
In login forms, the LJ user icon, the small head, hides some of the text in most Opera versions. This is because Opera interprets the relevant CSS differently from other browsers, and it has been fixed in O9tp2. (Note though that it doesn't affect login form functionality in any way.)
The rich text editor does not work in Opera. LJ recently switched to using FCK editor, which does not have support for Opera 9 (O8 does not support RTE in any case). I am told that FCK and Opera devs at least were working on getting them to cooperate.
For paid users...
The S2 layer editor is, to put it nicely, FUBAR. Horribly slow, doesn't recognize all keypresses, the edit textarea is about 20 characters wide, and so on. To be honest the editor is a great big failure in many browsers. I can only suggest trying other browsers until you find one that happens to work, or edit your layers in a text editor and pasting them in the editor whole. If someone knows a way to fix the editor with UserJS or other measures, please do share!
The ScrapBook "Annotate" page, which you get for example just after uploading a new image, has issues - the description box is about two pixels wide. You can still edit descriptions by going to Manage picture instead of Annotate. I'm not aware of a way to fix this, if you know one, please share. :)
Right-o. Did I miss something or make a mistake? Do you know of a way to fix some issue here, or information on how something behaves in a different Opera version? Do comment. I hope this is of some help to other Operaists on LJ. :)

CSS Question..
Date: 03/31/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser
I have a question regarding the overflow: inherit property. I'm hoping I explain myself correctly..
When I use an image for the background of div, such as this:
#content {position: absolute;
left: 200px;
top: 162px;
width: 600px;
height: 438px;
background: url(images/content.png);}
and I use a div class for the actual content such as this:
.contentbox {position: relative;
left: 170px;
top: 5px;
width: 400px;
overflow: inherit;
margin: 0.5em;
padding: 0px 0px 10px 0px;
line-height: 16px;}
I use the inherit property to display text in my < div class="contentbox"> when its height is more than that of the background image in < div id="content">. I had to do some playing around with this because I had never dealt with the situation before. I noticed that if my .contentbox was positioned with absolute, it wouldn't work. So, I changed to relative positioning and it works. In IE.
My question is.. is there a better way to go about doing this? If not, how would you get the same effect in other browsers? I'm only able to check on Firefox and I know it doesn't work there. Not sure about any other browsers.
I hope that's clear enough. Sincerely appreciate any input/suggestions.

Advertising the Internet
Date: 04/02/06
(See my site) Keywords: browser
AdSpring.org has just gone live!
Our idea is simple - advertisers decide how much they are willing to pay. The more they pay, the more the exposure. Users set their browser's homepage to us and each time they start surfing they are redirected to a new ad.
At the end of the each month, users get a distribution of our profits based on thier viewing compared to other users. Since we are a small startup, more of our profits can be distributed to the users, having more incentive to keep coming back.
Hope you can spread the word,
The AdSpring team.

(Computer Help) Keywords: browser, virus, web, spyware
I'm pretty sure my computer has a virus of some sort. Every 5-10 minutes or so, my mouse goes out of control and moves haphazardly all over the screen, that "error" sound beeps continuously (it makes kind of a ripping noise), and my browser closes. Sometimes whatever program it is that's being executed opens up Calculator, or starts creating WinRar archives. It also resizes my windows and if I'm using Word, will put up that "Do you want to save before quitting?" exit prompt. It used to do this very occasionally, but now as soon as I reboot, I have this trouble.
My Symantec anti-virus keeps telling me that it detects Spyware.Apropos.C, so I followed the instructions to get rid of that on the Symantec website (search for the file in my registry and clean it out..I found it and I did) but my computer STILL has this trouble and I have no idea what it is.
Any suggestions that you have are very much appreciated, because this is making me insane.

In Visual Studio 2005 I’m writing in VB for an ASP.NET website, when I Build my website and copy the files to a server I get error...
It says that I can not view the site I just wrote... however when I’m on the PC and I run it with debug or F5 the pages work correctly... What could be the problem?
The server is on the same LAN at my work and has our Intranet website running on it just fine…
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

quick question: script for 'make this your homepage'?
Date: 04/11/06
(Web Development) Keywords: browser, web, google
Today my boss told me that he wanted me to add a link "Make this your homepage" on our home page with a script to make our web site the homepage.
I Googled around and it looks like it works only in IE 5 and higher. Am I wrong?
Is there a such script that works in all browsers or at least IE, Netscape, and Firefox?
I feel stupid asking because if I want to bookmark, I use my browser's Preferences and bookmarks and think that anyone should know how to do that themselves. I'm betting this little script would be in JS.

CSS w/ JS vs DHTML Menus
Date: 04/10/06
(Web Development) Keywords: browser, css, html, asp, web
I'm developing 2 sites that have a horizontal navigation menu. Normally, I frown on horizontal menus because it doesn't allow for expansion of "areas", but the recent layouts tend to look better with a horizontal menu. I'm in a bit of a bind, because the only navigation drop down/slide out is a CSS driven layout with JS, but I can't get the hort. menu to work with it. It was suggested that I use a DHTML menu with layers, but I have never attempted that.
Could you all give me some advice or suggestions? I like the look and feel of the JS menu, but I know that about 10% of the users disable JS in the browsers and sometimes the JS prevents the links to be cataloged for search engines. What is the positive/negative aspects of using DHTML for the menus? Does anyone have a good tutourial for it? I'm using Dreamweaver 8.

Error Document handling issues
Date: 04/14/06
(Web Development) Keywords: php, browser, apache
Hello everyone
I've set the ErrorDocument in apache's .htaccess file to point to a particular php script. The latter outputs an image. That way I'm trying to output an image which actually does not exist under the url.
Basically this works fine with browsers, however when I try to give the image to a script (which I do not have access to) I get an error.
My two areas of concern are the following, is it possible for the user agent to however know that he is getting a response generated by an error handler, rather than the real thing?
If not it might be that I'm providing bad headers, since browsers are much more tolerant than the RFCs. Basically all I'm sending out is a "content-type", nothing more. Might this be too little?
Best,
Narek

help! Some pages break in IE
Date: 04/14/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css, html
I'm giving up. I can't find any difference in the code between certain pages and yet they display differently.
I'm working on www.ezdrycarpet.com. In Safari, Firefox, etc, (the good browsers) the blue background of the links bar on the left always goes all the way down. In IE, it does on some pages and won't on others.
For example:
http://www.ezdrycarpet.com/allergen.html - blue bar ends after the text.
http://www.ezdrycarpet.com/upholstery.html - the blue goes all the way down like it's supposed to.
I can't figure out what's breaking that bar on allergen.html. It's not badly nested DIVs (the page validates), it's not CSS because it works on other pages, It's not content length ... any help would be much appreciated.
