1. Have a clicked link open in a new window--- Flash?

    Date: 08/07/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html

    Ello again!

    So here's another question I've come across in my quest to figure out building a page in Flash-- how do I have a link open in a new browser window? I'd love to know how to do it for both flash, and html because I have a basic link for those needing to update their flash plugin, in html.

    And for anyone interested in seeing how my page is progressing, you can see it at: http://www.ufotofu.net/ufo_new.html

    Many thank you's in advance!

  2. Highly Annoying

    Okay, so somehow my laptop was infected with a fairly harmless, but annoying program that randomly pops up a web browser for "amerires.com".

    I ran HijackThis but can't find anything that would be affecting any of my browsers. I've run LavaSoft's Ad-Aware with the latest updates and a full system scan with Avast Home with latest updates as well. Nothing is detected. I ran SpyBot Search and Destroy and nothing was detected either.

    Here's my HiJack This log file for review:

    I have searched google but apparently this is a pretty new thing. There are mentions of the Amerires toolbar, but that's not installed, and I scanned my hard drive for an amerires.dll with no joy there either.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  3. Special Exceptions for Safari

    Date: 08/08/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css

    I know people swear up n down about CSS. But having used it exclusively for 10 months now, its a piece of crap. Only because every single browser needs special rules. I didnt need that with tables ... development time has more than doubled.

    How do you load a special CSS page for Safari? I have the site looking good in FireFOx and IE but now safari is ignoring the CSS!

  4. Evil Windows

    Date: 08/10/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, virus, web, linux, yahoo

    I am a Linux man. I am familiar with most Linux's. I enjoy Linux and understand the filesystem layout etc.
    Unfortunetly geing the Junior tech I sometimes have to be the computer whooping boy. So, when a Windows luser decides to install the latest virus on his laptop, I have to figure it out.
    Unfortunetly I've been out of the Windows world for so long, I am challenged by this latest problem.
    The CD rom is busted (firmware I think). It's a laptop, so no disk access. And now recently the web browser won't work. When I say won't work, I mean that the system pings www.yahoo.com, but the web browser (ie and FF) say that Unable to Connect.
    Windows Firewall is on, off, it doesn't matter.
    This is XP with sp2.
    Oh btw, NOD32 said it does/did have a virus but I can't pull it up again.

    So my question is, what is causing the browser to not be able to pull up pages.

    Any help is appreciated. thx

  5. File uploads.

    Date: 08/13/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, security, web

    I'm creating a photo upload site, using a WAMP server for development and Dreamhost for production. I'm pretty new to file uploads, and really just don't know where to begin. I'd like each user to have their own folder (a home directory, if you will), and for every photo uploaded has three seperate images in a uniquely named folder (currently a hash of the filename and unix time at creation). For example, a username of "demo" uploading "testing.jpg" would have his files placed in the "/demo/HashOfTestingJPG" directory, with the files "thumb.jpg", "scaled.jpg", and "testing.jpg". When demo uploads another file, a different folder is created within the "demo" folder, so a file named foobar.jpg would be in the "/demo/HashOfFoobarJPG" folder with these three generated files.

    My WAMP server is creating folders and uploading these files in C:\wamp\tmp, but I'm finding that my browser cannot access this directly through a web browser (makes sense). My php.ini file allows me to specify a "temporary" file upload directory, but is there a "permanent" upload directory? To accomplish what I want to do, should I just change the uploads directory to something like http://localhost/pictures/uploads and appropriately chmod that directory? What security issues do I need to worry about? If you use Dreamhost, do they require me to do anything special to allow such a setup?

    Also, what might I do to prevent a user from viewing the original file directly? The original version needs to be viewable through the website, but NOT via /demo/HashOfTestingJPG/testing.jpg. Thank you all for your help.

  6. Flickering Anchor Links

    Date: 08/15/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html

    I'm having an issue--only in certain browsers--with anchor links flickering.

    Here is the page : www.juliamannes.com/FAQflicker.html
    Here is the stylesheet : www.juliamannes.com/juliastyles.css

    In Safari it looks good. In my client's browser (I'm not sure if this is Firefox or IE) when she hovers on the named anchors (not the links to them, but just the anchors themselves) they flicker constantly back and forth between a slightly smaller size and the size they're supposed to be. I went into Opera and was able to see for myself the random-smaller-size-thing when I hovered...

    I'd love it if some of you felt like taking a minute and looking at the site and possibly lending your expertise. What's the story here? All of my hover/link/active/etc. styles seem to be set exactly the same. Did I do something dumb and obvious that I'm not seeing? Is it possibly because I have two differently-sized links on the same line?

    ?

    I've actually been researching this problem for a few weeks to no avail, so if anyone doesn't have the answer but would like to point me in the direction of a community or forum that might be able to help, please do so.

  8. Halp!

    Date: 08/20/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web

    Ok, so here's my trouble...
    I have a Mac laptop. Since Safari is an inferior web browser, I download Firefox. I get an icon in my Applications that is a sheet of paper with a hard drive on it called Firefox 2.0.0.6 dmg, and an icon of an external drive with the Firefox logo in my desktop. I click on the icon in my desktop and it brings open a small window with a Firefox logo in color on the left, a greyscale logo with a plus sign and arrow pointing at it in the middle and a greyscale Applications icon on the right. I can click on the color logo and it opens a Firefox browser. I cannot click anything else in the window.
    When I shut down my computer and turn it on later to use it, the icon is gone from my desktop. There is only the paper with a harddrive icon in Applications. I have to click it and re-accept the Terms of Service, and Then I get the weird window with the 3 icons all over again. It is annoying and I wish I could just have Firefox all the time. And not have to jump through a bunch of hoops...
    Thanks

    2) control volume (at least I need common for whole browser instance or, even better for tabs)

    I hope it will be interesting not only for me.
    I need info for firefox and WIN XP. But for other OS and browsers it will be intresting too.

  10. Want to make your site look better on the iPhone with one line of HTML?

    Date: 08/21/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    It’s easy—just add a tag that lets the iPhone know how wide to display the initial page. I added the following code to the in my template yesterday:

    <meta name=“viewport” content=“width=808″ />
    Every browser besides MobileSafari will ignore this information. But it does something very important on the iPhone: it optimizes the viewport for your content.

    By default, the iPhone uses a viewport of 980 pixels—a value chosen to maximize compatibility with a broad range of web sites. When you specify the viewport width explicitly, you will eliminate any empty space between that 980 pixels and the width of your element.

    Date: 08/23/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, java, web

    I have to say that I'm a beginner when it comes to web design, so please be patient with me.

    I'm trying to incorporate this script into my website http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex4/lightbox2/index.htm but for some reason when I preview it, my enlarged picture just showes up in a new browser in the top-left side.
    I also tried using this script http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex4/thumbnail.htm and the same thing happens. I checked all my paths, I attached the stylesheet and I put the links in the header for the .js files.

    I don't know javascript at all, so I'm not sure if I should just leave the files in my site root folder or if I should copy and paste it into the header as well....

    What am I doing wrong??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  13. The horrors of frames

    Date: 08/29/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, web

    I've always avoided using frames up til now, but I've recently had to implement a form spell checker script on a site I'm working on, and it's causing me grief. The code for the actual display is as follows:

    " marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"
    scrolling="auto" frameborder="0" border="0">
    " marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"
    scrolling="auto" frameborder="0" border="0">
    <br /> <h2>You must have frames enabled in your web browser to use the spell checker.</h2><br />

    The problem I'm getting is that the text displayed (i.e., the bit being checked) refuses to fill the window properly. Instead it forms one long line of text so that it has to be scrolled along. I've tried turning scrolling off, but it still displays in the same way - the only difference is that you can't read the rest of it. I've also tried adding frameset cols with a fixed width, but to no effect. The most frustrating thing is that as it loads, the text displays as I'd like it to, fitting nicely into the popup window, but then changes its mind. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I would really appreciate the help!

    if (!isset($reason)) {
        echo "\n\n";

  14. Fixed vs. Absolute Positioning

    Date: 09/04/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

    So, I have made a few sites lately that require a little CSS workaround so I can get absolute positioning that is horizontally centered.

    What I have been doing to achieve this is to create one div, with a width of 100%, and I absolutely position it to whatever position I want it to be on the page, vertically (top: 68px, or whatever). Then within that div I place a second div for my content, specify a width, and set the margins to auto. Voila: centering.

    I have been wrestling with something bizarre on my latest website, however (and unfortunately, it's not online yet for me to show you the code). Despite the fact that none of my elements are wider than the window size, a bottom side-to-side scroll bar appears, and my theoretically centered items are moving side-to-side. Very slightly--no more than 25 pixels or so. (And this happened both in Firefox and Safari; I have not yet tested it in a Windows computer.)

    I had a sneaking suspicion this may relate to my background image, which is 800px wide and therefore possibly wider than my window--however, when I moved the window so that part of it was offscreen and resized it to a gigantic width, the problem remained. Also, why would a browser use the background image as a basis for percentage widths, and not the window itself? So, question one: what do you think is making this happen?

    To continue with my story:
    A not-very-helpful fix was to set my parent div to 95%. This completely eliminated the problem of it moving around, but of course, threw off my centering. However, after restoring it to 100%, on a whim, I changed the positioning from absolute to fixed. Everything is now working fine in both browsers?

    What's the story on this? I have read that fixed positioning is less all-around compatible with different browsers than absolute positioning... But I'm realizing, as I write this, that I don't fully understand the difference between fixed positioning vs. absolute positioning. In what instances would you use one instead of the other, and why? And why do you suppose my particular content is working properly in fixed, but not in absolute, position?

    Disclaimer: This is really less of a "help me with my code" question and much more of a "give me your input on fixed and absolute positioning in general" question. So if you're going to say, "post the code and I'll tell you what's going on," and nothing else, don't bother about it--If I still have a problem later, I will post the code, but right now I'm more interested in hearing general thoughts. :)

  15. More Firefox URI handling security hiccups

    Date: 09/04/07 (Security)    Keywords: browser, security, web

    Mozilla has not quite fixed the security hiccups with URI protocol handling in Firefox. According to Billy Rios and Nate McFeters, the two security researchers behind the exposure of protocol abuse in popular Web browsers, Firefox is still vulnerable to a remote command injection flaw that...

  16. Electronic Arts offering ad supported games

    Date: 09/05/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: php, browser

    Electronic Arts is offering these games for download, free. They are ad supported:

    * Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
    * Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
    * Far Cry
    * Rayman Raving Rabbids
    * Command & Conquer Gold

    The deal is legit. Right now I'm trying Far Cry. The ad showed up after the developer credits and before the menu. The ad plays at level load screens. Also, static banners are present in the game menu. Right now all I see are ads from McDonald's. There is no indication that I see so far that this is the usual "adware" in the sense that the copy of Winpatrol that I have installed did not detect any new automatic processes being installed. If and when ads are pressed, the program just minimizes while the browser comes up.

    Other than those things it's the usual game of Far Cry.

  17. Your Favorite Reference Materials

    Date: 09/10/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hi all,

    For no pressing reason (well, possibly because I'm procrastinating on packing up my apartment to move next week), I'm trying to get together a good working list of web and graphic design reference resources.

    What are your favorite places to go for reference when you're having trouble with browser compatibility, or need a refresher on something you don't use all the time, or just aren't sure where to start on a project? Conversely, is there a site or book that you ABSOLUTELY DON'T RECCOMEND for reference purposes?

  18. Divs, Fixed Positioning, and Scrolling

    Date: 09/11/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html

    So here's the deal: I've only recently nixed tables, etc. in favor of 100% div-based layout. I'm trying to do something and I'm not sure if it's 100% possible and I'm dumb for not knowing how, or just not something that's doable in a fully browser-compatible way.

    The site (still under construction, so please don't criticize the obvious big flaws at the moment! I'm aware and fixing them :) is www.sweetcarolinesnyc.com. Specifically, go to www.sweetcarolinesnyc.com/about.html, because that's where my issue comes into play.

    So, a few things about this site: I've set a background image with the top piano/logo banner built into it. You'll notice that at the bottom, I also have a fixed-position address/contact info bar.

    You'll also see that when that main content div exceeds the available screenspace, scrolling kind of makes the site messy. The top content of the div scrolls up over my title and piano keys, and the bottom of the content scrolls along under my fixed bottom gif, making it impossible to read.

    I've considered a few workaround fixes: nixing the background image and making it two sliced, absolute-positioned images, the top part with a z-index of 2 and the bottom part with a z-index of -1. And giving up on the fixed positioning of my bottom bar and just allowing it to hang out at the bottom of the content waiting for someone to scroll to it. Or, setting a set height for my content div and accepting a small auto-scrollbar inside the page for when content is too big.

    But what I'm wondering: is there a way to have this page set up the way I really WANT it set up, without the bugs? In other words--the background image to stay a background image, my fixed bottom gif staying fixed, and the main page scrollbar controlling ONLY that main, moveable content. Am I dreaming? (Or am I just dumb and missing something obvious?)

    Thoughts?

  19. differences across browsers

    Date: 09/11/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Greetings.

    I'm almost finished with a web design project and I just checked it across all browsers. Surprise- there is a problem.

    the website i'm working on is located here

    you can see all the browser screenshots here

    the site looks good on most browsers, but on some the slideshow is pushed down too far and on others it doesn't show up at all.

    the client really wants the slideshow and i'm not sure how to fix the problem. any advice?

    thanks!

  20. Restricting web sites

    Date: 09/14/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: browser, web

    In Windows XP, how might I restrict a user to visiting exactly one website?
    Is there a group policy that can be set? Would it still work if a user
    brought an alternative browser on a Flash drive or something? Thank you.
