Hi! I'm new to this community, but I've got a simple question, I think. I'm working on a site for one of my school's clubs, and I can't figure out how to add a header image. I'm new to HTML and CSS, so I'm quite clueless, to be honest. I'm still learning, so any advice would be GREAT.
I tried to add one, but it didn't work.
Also, I hope it has been looking quite bad in some browsers. I haven't validated it yet or anything, so... yes. Does anyone know a way that I can make it more IE/Firefox friendly?
It hasn't been working for a few people in FF, and I know it looks bad in older versions of IE (and even in later versions, on some occasions). It's just frustrating, because it looks fine for me, and I use Firefox as well. Ahhh!
Sorry, this turned out to be a lot longer than I'd expected!
I have a problem installing the latest version of Flash, or rather, I have no problem with the actual installing (the adobe site says it's installed, I see it in the add/remove software list and so on) but it wont play. I've googled a bit and I'm not alone with this issue, but the solution offered doesn't work for me (i.e. close all browser windows, uninstall flash, re-install flash from adobe site/ download software and install manually). Does anyone know of another solution or reason as to why it wont play? More and more sites are using the latest version and it's getting annoying.
Scott Schiller has re-created the classical Araknoid game with DHTML. It is elegantly done and a fun to play.
He nicely summarizes his experience in developing the game:
Many late nights and coffee went into the development of DHTML Arkanoid. Forget formal education - this was a double-header in Object-Oriented Javascript, DOM procedures, and cross-browser compatibility.

What does it mean when I click on the various tabs I have open in Firefox, but it won't switch to that tab? It's happened on both my PC at home and my MAC at work. The page title in the browser title bar changes accordingly, but the page remains stuck on whatever tab I successfully opened last.
First of all, thank you to everyone who answered my last questions! It was extremely helpful and it got me closer to my goal!
I have run into a minor snag and again, I am at a loss as to how to fix it...I have searched the web and can't find the solution that will work...
So here it is: if you look at the site in Firefox, the links show up correctly and are able to be clicked on no matter which sublevel I am on. But if you look at it in Internet Explorer 7, you cannot open the sublinks below the first one unless you are extremely careful with the mouse and there is not a way to make it over to the sub-sub-links. Is there a code I need to add to make it work in IE7? And if anyone has IE6, is it working there? It works in the most recent versions of Safari, Opera, and Netscape. It's just IE that's the problem and since most people that will be using this site use IE, that would be a problem :-)
Also, if you look at this page in Internet Explorer, down near the bottom, the Other Information section is positioned how I would like it, but in Firefox and all other browsers it is showing up underneath it. Any suggestions for that?
I appreciate all of your help!!! Thank you again for everything!!

Hi, I'm new to the site though I've been watching it for a while. I'm also relatively new at webdesign. I work under Windows XP SP2. (And I'm French, so be kind to my syntax).
I met a weird display in IE 7, images positioned with float:left are partially vanishing and reappearing when scrolling down... 'Partially' means half or a third of the picture becomes more or less transparent.
I searched the Web, found a lot of explanations about HasLayout (which I didn't really understand). Eventually the only efficient patch was to move my pictures from left... to right. Yes, they're correctly displayed now. As my young customer won't be disturbed by this solution I'll hold to it, but I'm curious... How can this kind of problem of float/display in IE be fixed ? I'll add the bug occures only in IE7, display is okay (with hacks) in 6, 5.5 and 5.
Second question: I had to use a table (yerk, I know, I prefer pure CSS too) because I couldn't properly fix three columns in various resolutions, browsers and versions - but when displayed in Opera (8 and 7), parts of the text are underlined (like links), but it changes when scrolling down, underlined then not underlined then again... There's no mistakes in the links, the page is xhtml validated.
Check Point Software Technologies has released a public beta of ZoneAlarm ForceField, a browser virtualization security tool that promises anti-phishing and spyware-blocking capabilities. The software is available as a free download during the beta testing period. Check Point plans to slap a $29.95 price tag on...
I'm having a somewhat horrible problem. The following page appears as desired. I've tested it on many different browsers and the only one with a slight variation is Internet Explorer.
I went to validate it and ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. Seriously. It said the doctype was wrong, even after attempting to fix it. Using Dreamweaver to convert it to another type breaks some elements of the design, specifically the tooltips. It won't validate properly because of the doctype problem, so I'm not even sure if the problems pointed out in the entire document are what they said they are seeing as they added some standard doctype just so it would validate as SOMETHING. Ugh...
I don't know... I need some help if it can be given. What have I done wrong and how can I save what I've done? PLEASE HELP. I'm so desperate I could cry.

A pox on virus writers. Damn you all, you complicate everything needlessly and should suffer accordingly! But you won't, which is the greatest injustice!
Anyway. I got some virus protection software from Verizon, my ISP. Ever since then, when I click the "send" button in my browser as I'm composing emails with gmail (google mail), *nothing* happens. Other than the little depression graphic for the actual button looks like its being activated. But it LIES! Cause as I've said, nothing, in fact, happens. As in, the mail is not sent.
Anyone know a fix for this? I've tinkered with the software, and haven't found a way to resolve this. I'm guessing its just a pesky setting, but I'm uber annoyed and if anyone has a fix I'd be much obliged. If not, I'll be satisfied with some sympathy. ^_^ I'm also open to the possibility that it might not be the software, and just a coincidence with something else, but I'm skeptical. I think the virus software is by far the most likely culprit.
First off, thank you to everyone who has helped thus far!
I have two final small details both relating to IE6.
I still cannot get the sub menus in the drop down menu to display. It works in IE7, Firefox, etc, but not in IE6.
The other "problem", though if I don't find a solution to this one, I won't be overly upset, is in all other browsers I have the whole website centered. In IE6, it is aligned on the left.
The website again is here. The CSS is here and the Javascript is here.
I truly appreciate this. I have been googling this problem for several hours and would appreciate any feedback!!

Thought I'd share this little gem as I randomly sit here waiting to get the energy to leave my desk. Not only should you, as a Javascript coder, know this but you should ensure anyone creating HTML pages that you will later have to add Javascript to should know it as well (bad code monkeys!). It's a simple rule but effective.
Don't do this . Yup don't use submit buttons.... no wait I meant don't call your submit buttons 'submit'. I mean it's nice and everything to give the button a name, makes the page validate and all, and if the buttons parameter won't be looked at by the server code then what's the problem?
Now most of you will know the answer but for the rest of you I'll make it nice and simple. Internet Explorer.
The problem is that Internet Explorers braindead implementation of DOM 0 will overwrite the form.submit(); with your 'submit' button. So when you later in your JS call form.submit(); nothing happens. Well nothing happens in IE, after you've fully tested your code in a proper browser.
To avoid such things just don't do it. And avoid giving a div the idgetElementById while you're at it. Not sure if that would work but I wouldn't be surprised.
