1. Can you nest min-heights?

    Date: 10/11/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

    I have a webpage I'm building where the background has one color, and the content, offset from the center, has a different color behind it.

    My content is dynamic, so I can't specify different CSS classes based on the page.

    For long pages, I need the background colors to reach from the top of the browser to the bottom... simple, add a "min-height" to the body and let the color stretch with the content on the child div.

    But if I want to have this same set-up on short pages, the min height will stretch the bodys color but the childs background color stays short and just around the content. If I change the bodys and child to height:100%, it'll work, but the color will stop on long pages where you have to scroll. And apparently you can't nest min-heights, to have both body and child have a minimum height of 100%.

    I tried doing the "faux-columns" effect by adding a repeating background image to the body which would have a min-height 100% added. But the problem is my content is offset from center, and I can't position (I think) offset from center.

    I've also tried not defining heights anywhere but the child div, and have the child div have a min-height:100%, but that apparently won't expand the parent elements.

    I feel like I'm missing something simple. Help!

  2. Website Crit

    Date: 10/19/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Greets folks. Work has been slow recently, so I decided to give the website an overhaul. Personally I think it's quite busy and cramped and well... laid out with tables. It was basically built from a template before my arrival.

    Anyway, here's what I have come up with and I'm looking for a crit and such. If you have anything you like or dislike, by all means let me know. I'm trying to simplify things while maintaining the current info.

    So, be harsh if you must, I won't get offended. Thanks all.

    P.S. For some reason, the Give to the College button is wonky in Mozilla-browsers for Mac (Why? I don't know.) Also, the conditional will not load the specific IE 6 style (Why? I don't know.). Other than that, I believe everything works in most browsers as well as validates.

  3. Which browsers should I test on.

    Date: 10/20/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft

    I haven't been doing web design for a few years and I just want to be sure that I cover all my bases. Which browsers should I test on. I've got Firefox, Netscape, Internet Explorer and Opera. Are there anymore that you would recommend? Is there a browser that I didn't mention that you think is fantastic? Let me know. Also, I use Microsoft Windows XP (PC) because I know sometimes Mac/PC factors into what people think is or isn't wonderful.

  4. Firefox hates me!

    Date: 10/20/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

    I have another FireFox question...stuff seems to be randomly messing up now. I have to ask here because I can't think of how to word it and any way I've tried searching for it and haven't found anything.

    One day, I opened FireFox and the bottom bar had jumped way up.

    Another thing I noticed in here is that on the bottom left is a small orange upside-down v.

    It won't allow me to resize it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It came right back. I got so frustrated with this that I started using Internet Explorer 7, but either my computer is a shade to slow for it, it uses too much memory, or both. It just didn't run as smoothly or quick as FireFox. So please, help me get my FireFox back!

    Any other browsers I should consider? Is Opera better than FireFox?

  5. Stuff working in safe mde, not in normal.

    Date: 10/23/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, browser, java, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google

    I keep having bizarre computer problems, yet I can't detect any viruses, and the only spyware I had was a couple tracking cookies I get from time to time and I deleted them.

    Earlier Word wouldn't open, now it will. Sometimes Spybot and Ad-aware will open, sometimes not. Semagic won't open, I get an error message that says "Can't enumerate device." I've gotten the same error when trying to open Word, but now it works.

    And sometimes the things that won't open give me an error message that there is not enough memory to run it, even though I have plenty and recently defragged.

    I started my computer in safe mode and everything was peachy. I opened Fix-it Utilities, ran some scans and a registry de-frag, as well as running ad-aware and spybot again. All clean. Restarted the computer in normal and tried to open Fix-it, just to test. Still doesn't work. Neither does Semagic and a couple other random things. And randomly, my internet browser fails. Weather I'm in Opera, IE, or Firefox...they all do it. Half the text and images vanish, some look like they are on top of each other. I don't understand.

    I'm pretty sure it must be one thing causing all of this, because it all started two days ago together.

    Any ideas?

    This is on an HP PC with Windows XP by the way.

  6. One problem, similar to before, but different!

    Date: 10/26/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, asp, java, google

    **EDIT**
    What I am asking for, is if the javascript code below is not compatible with Netscape or Firefox for some reason or if you know of any reason why it might not work in only those browsers. I can't figure out why it's not working in only those two browsers. It gives back the appropriate information in IE, Safari and Opera.

    I have attempted to search online for it but I keep hitting dead-ends. If you have suggestions as to what keywords I should be searching for online, that would also be appreciated. I have been searching for "javascript, netscape, safari, compatibility, issues, problems" and various other words like that. The code below does work in IE 6 and 7, Safari, and Opera.

    Ok, we've got a form where people put in their first name, last name, email address, and a five digit number. On the confirmation page, we want to return to them: the first initial of their first name and full last name and then the first initial of their first name, first initial of their last name, and the five digits they put in.

    For example, if I entered:
    First Name: Brittany
    Last Name: Jackson
    5 Digits: 12345

    I would want returned:
    bjackson
    bj12345

    We are using Javascript for it, and where it previously worked, it suddenly stopped working. Thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions and help, I now have it working in Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari, but it won't work in Netscape or Firefox and I'm not sure why. I have searched and googled it, but haven't come up with an answer.

    On the form page, the javascript we have in the header is (with the script type="text/javascript" in the appropriate < >'s, of course:

    //script type="text/javascript"
    function verify(forms) {
    var errors='';
    if ((document.forms.first.value == "") || (document.forms.last.value == ""))
    errors+="Please enter your first and last name.\n";
    if (errors){
    alert(errors)
    return false;}

    fa = document.forms.first.value.charAt(0);
    la = document.forms.last.value.charAt(0)

    var len;
    var aryText = new Array()
    var hyp = "";

    if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf ('-') != -1) {
    len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf('-')
    for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
    aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
    hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
    }
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
    }

    else if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf (' ') != -1) {
    len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf(' ')
    for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
    aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
    hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
    }
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
    }

    else{
    document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + document.forms.last.value.toLowerCase();
    }
    document.forms.code.value = fa.toLowerCase() + la.toLowerCase() + document.forms.ssn.value;
    return true;
    }
    //

    The words after form relate to the fields in the form.

    And then in the body, under the start of the form class we have (obviously these would have the start and end tags (<>):

    form class="forms" name="forms" action="apply.asp" method="post"

    input type="hidden" name="code"
    onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /
    input type="hidden" name="username"
    onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /

    On our confirmation page/asp page we have:

    //

Name Username* E-mail Address* Code

<% Response.Write(first)
Response.Write(" ")
Response.Write(last) %>
<% Response.Write(username) %> <% Response.Write(username) %>@oursite.org <% Response.Write(code) %>
//

It currently returns the first and last name in Netscape and Firefox, but nothing else. Again, it is working in Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera.

Can someone see something that we're missing that is unique only for Firefox and Netscape?

Any help is truly appreciated! You guys are great! Thanks in advance!!

  • I don't know what's going on...

    Date: 10/27/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    I've been doing (fairly standard) web design for over 10 years now as a hobby, and I thought I understood simple stuff like aligning text, but it seems not!

    Can someone explain to me what is going on here, and how I can fix it?

    http://www.briarrosegallery.co.uk/test.html

    The text in the main area, with the 'welcome' gif and 'this site has been made....' is supposed to be aligned to the left. Nothing (that I can see) in my code centres it, and when I look at it in dreamweaver it appears on the left. But when I view it in a browser, either online or just using the files on my PC, it is always centred!

    Please someone tell me what's going on because I've been staring at this for some time now and I just don't get it....

    thanks hugely :)

    Mary Jo Foley is reporting that Microsoft's Sync Framework is now available for download. Some others are calling it a competitor to Google Gears but it's not a good comparison. For one thing, Sync isn't a browser plugin. Based on the documentation it looks like it's aimed at synchronizing data...

    Are there any known issues with file() causing Fatal errors? A production script died on a scheduled file import this morning, it's crashing on this line:

    $lines = file($fullfilepath);

    If I access via a browser the script pops up a "save as" box with scriptname.php as the file to save.

    The script works fine on similar test files. If I change to

    $blah = file_get_contents($fullfilepath);

    The script doesn't die.

    I looked around on google but keyword "file" turns up everything but what I need.

  • Thumbnail Gallery with Closeups

    Date: 11/09/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, java

    I'm trying to build a thumbnail gallery with pretty much the exact same functionality as istockphoto has. That is, one a cursor rolls over a thumbnail, a div shows containing a larger version of the image with a position relative to the cursor position. Additionally, depending on the browser window's size, the div will have an adjusted position so that it remains in the browser window. I hope that makes sense. Just check out the search results of any istockphoto search to see what I'm talking about.

    Anyways, my javascript skills are beginner to decent (in that I can look at a script and figure out what's going on), but if anyone can point me to a tutorial on this it would help me immensely. Thanks in advance.

  • Desktop and My Computer: odd behaviour

    Date: 11/12/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

    Hello all,

    My details
    I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavillion laptop, with Firefox as my main browser. I have AVG, Zonealarm, Spybot and Adaware, and I last ran Spybot last night (it found one entry - Statcounter - which I fixed).

    I'm fairly ignorant about technical matters, but reasonably comfortable with things like editing the registry if someone talks me through in detail.

    My problem
    I decided to tidy up my desktop today, and started deleting shortcuts that I never use. Some of them deleted no problem, but I've run into something weird with others. When I try to delete, it gives me the customary 'this deletes the shortcut, not the program' message, but then flashes up an error message: 'Cannot delete . Access is denied. Make sure the disc is not full or write-protected and the file is not in use.'

    This is happening with shortcut icons for Windows Live Messenger, Readerware, Firefox and AVG. It deleted the ones for Internet Explorer, CCleaner and Semagic without any problems.

    I've also run into another problem which may or may not be connected. When I open up 'My Computer', the 'My Documents' icon is missing from the main view. It's still there in the sidebar, and I can access it no problem, but where the icon usually shows up under 'Files stored on this computer' I only have 'Shared documents'.

    Any ideas? These are both minor problems in themselves, but I'm slightly concerned they are symptoms of something more sinister.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Fried Mobo on a Satellite P25-S520?

    Date: 11/12/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, web

    Question/Problem: When booting, the computer would load the OS, then immediately shut down. In addition, the A/C power light would flicker on and off, and I'd have to jiggle the power connector to get it to go solid. Now, the computer won't even turn on, and the AC light stays off. I previously lost the cord that went from wall-->brick, so I found another one off of an old stereo that seemed to work. However, I don't know if that caused the mobo to fry. :S

    Operating System and VERSION: Windows Vista Beta (I think Version 2)

    Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox (I can't remember which version)

    Your level of experience: Beginnerish...not a n00b, but not comfortable with hardware.

    Duration of problem: Uhm...a long time?

    Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I tried to see if it was the power brick, but I think it's the inverter on the motherboard. I have a Satellite P25-S520 with a P4 (IIRC) processor, and I *think* 1.5 GHz of RAM. I've had the cover off and had a coworker look at it...he said everything looked good. Is there any way to replace *just* the power inverter on the MB, or am I looking at a whole new setup here? If I'm looking at a whole new setup, is there any way to salvage the processor and RAM off the old MB, or should I just start fresh? Cheaper is better here, as I'm a student...free is best...if someone has a MB that they don't need anymore, I'll take it off your hands. :P

    Another unrelated issue is the DVD-RW drive...I need a new one...where's the best place to go for a cheap one? I tried getting one off Fleabay, but it didn't fit. If anyone needs a power brick or DVD/RW drive, I'll gladly sell it. ^_^

    I can access the internet,msn,windows media player etc from the task manager. If I cancel explorer then the start bar and desktop icons dissapear all together, If I then try to run it again it either continues displaying and error message or my start bar and desktop icons freeze so there is no way for me to click on them.

  • Fixing type rags on the web

    Date: 11/13/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, database, web

    I'm currently having an argument debate at work whether it's worthwhile to nitpickingly fix uneven type rags on the web (in a fixed-width div) via line breaks, forced justification, adding spaces, changing type sizes, changing word and letter spacing with CSS (sometimes on individual lines and words), changing the size of the box, etc. much the way one would do on a print piece. My argument is that type renders with slight differences across browsers and platforms, and that trying to manipulate it so precisely is not only insanely time consuming and has to be re-done with every new page -and- every copy change change, it may not look precisely the same across different browsers and different default fonts, or even if people increase type sizes above the default, and if the type doesn't render exactly the way it does on our screens, micro-adjustments may cause even more awkward rags or spacing.

    For a large, dynamic, database-driven site, of course this would be even harder, but we're working on it for our small, static corporate site of maybe 10-20 pages that we don't expect to be updated every time. My argument is that it'll end up being a lot of time spent on something that may not work everywhere or backfire, but I'm being outvoted. I would really appreciate any experience or advice dealing with this issue, aside from making the whole thing an image or a Flash file.

    I'm posting this in both '[info]'webdesign and '[info]'graphicdesign since it's both aesthetic and technical.

  • not EXACTLY web related, but here we go...

    Date: 11/29/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Don't know if anyone's had this problem before or anything, and it seems to be just my computer, but you never know. SO, I'm asking here anyway.

    Yesterday I changed the name addresses on a domain name at godaddy.com to point to the webpage I'm working on.
    By the end of the night, I was at someone elses house, and checked to see if it worked. It did.
    BUT, I am home now on my computer, and it's not working.
    I have cleared all my information and cookies on the browser like godaddy.com suggested, and it still doesn't work. Not only that, but it's not just that browser that isn't working.
    ALL of the browsers on my computer aren't working. They all show the godaddy.com parking page instead of the page I created, but I know for a fact it is pointing to the right one.

    So, this isn't really a webpage question, I think.
    I need to see what I'm doing when I work on the page, obviously.
    http://www.haddadbakery.com is the domain name, just so you can see for yourself.
    I don't know if it matters, but I'm on an intel macintosh computer.
    I'm asking here because this is somewhat related and maybe someone has had this problem before...

    I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.

    Firefox churns to version 2.0.0.11

    Mozilla's bug-munching mascot

    (Credit: Mozilla)

    Mozilla on Friday released the third update to Firefox this month, version 2.0.0.11, to fix a stability problem in the previous version.

    "We strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release," a post on the Firefox developer blog said.

    The open-source Web browser update arrived swiftly after version 2.0.0.8, released October 18, version 2.0.0.9 from November 1, and version 2.0.0.10 from November 26. Which explains why I'm getting a lot of software update messages from my Web browser.

    Version 2.0.0.10 broke a feature that lets images be displayed with special effects such as rotated pictures and image reflections, according to Mozilla's bug-tracking site. The problem was fixed within a day and distributed within five, but not before some whose sites were affected by the bug had voiced frustration.

    "Customers are complaining because their Firefox automatically updated to 2.0.0.10 and now they can no longer order photo prints in our shop. I think this is a very serious problem and I hope it will be fixed immediately in a 2.0.0.11 update," a post by Klaus Reimer said.

    In an indirect response, Firefox coder Nick Thomas pointed to mailing lists that people can use to test their sites with imminent new Firefox versions. Thomas also said that the five-day turnaround is "the fastest turnaround between Firefox releases to date."

    As long as the Mozilla coders are stamping out bugs, one that's annoyed me has become more prominent of late because it shows up when I install a Firefox update.

    When I restore my Firefox browser sessions upon rebooting my computer, it's impossible to get rid of the "You've been updated to the latest version of Firefox" page. Even if I close that tab, it comes back later, so I have to start with a clean browsing slate to make it go away. It's not a stability or security problem, but it's not a credit to what is a notably influential project.

    Mozilla released the first beta version of Firefox 3, called Gran Paradiso, less than two weeks ago. The second Firefox 3 beta should be done in "late December" if all goes well, according to another Mozilla developer blog post Friday.
