1. How do I reformat an internal extra hard storage drive?

    Date: 10/30/07     Keywords: spyware

I have something on the drive, I don't know what it is. It can not be deleted, so I want to wipe the storage drive clean, but I can't use the windows vista disc, because windows is not on that drive. Or maybe I can? I have someone who was helping me set it up, and now I can't reach him for help. I saw a program for like 45 bucks, but it should not take a program to reformat a drive. Thanks you in advance for any help. I am thinking this program, I can't delete in the folder I can't delete must be spyware.

  3. Not a computer help question, more of an iPod help question

    Date: 10/29/07     Keywords: software

I have a 5th Generation iPod.  Up until now it has worked fine.  I was listening to it and it froze out of the blue.  I waited a couple of seconds to be sure it was frozen then I reset it.  It reset with no problems and I started to listen to my music again.  All of a sudden the song stopped.  I grabbed my ipod and looked at it and saw the Apple icon.  My ipod continues to restart. I've put it to sleep and locked the hold button and it still restarts.  The ipod software is up to date and when I connect it to a Mac or PC it shows up and the songs play with no problems. I have no idea what to do.  If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

  4. winamp not loading songs in order

    Date: 10/28/07     Keywords: no keywords

Here is a very specific question:

If I'm loading songs into Winamp from a folder in my WindowsXP directory, why would they not load in order? The songs are titled in the following fashion:

    01 - artist - song title
    02 - artist - song title
    etc.

  5. Laptop being annoying. Help?

    Date: 10/28/07     Keywords: no keywords

My laptop shuts off after being turned on for only 10 seconds.

And this is despite it being plugged-in.

I think it might be a bad battery (it can't be low because it's been plugged-in and technically in "charge-mode" for over 20 hours), but if it's plugged-in to an outlet, the state of the battery shouldn't matter, correct?

Or do I just need a new laptop battery to fix this "shutting-off" issue? What else could it be?

I have an old/renovated Dell laptop that only cost me $280, and I have no idea how old the battery is, for the record.

  7. RAM-----Help!

    Date: 10/25/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello!

I got my new computer a year ago and just recently left TalkTalk and now back with BT Broadband. But ever since i got it (last month) my computer has been terribly slow and so has the internet. All i have running are things like Internet, Bittorrent, Photoshop, itunes and Last.FM but i dont have them constantly running in the background, only when i need them, as once upon a time i could have six things running, now i can barely have one!!! I really need someone to help me find out my RAM space and if its even the RAM thats making my comp so slow. Thanks!

  8. DVDs skipping

    Date: 10/24/07     Keywords: no keywords

So, I was copying a load of video files to CD-RW drives yesterday to free up some space on my hard drive (and by a load, I mean over 20 disks, if that's important) and now, all of a sudden, my DVD drive has started playing up. I can play video files on my computer with no problems, but ordinary DVDs skip to the point where I can't actually watch them (and it's not just the programs themselves, but the menus and everything else as well). I have tried multiple DVDs and none of them will play smoothly. My laptop uses Windows XP and I play DVDs using Media Center (although they aren't working on any of the other players, either).

Does anyone have any solutions to this problem for someone who is completely computer retarded? The laptop is less than a year old and I would really hate for it to be broken, so I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

    Thanks.

  9. Vista boot freezes after restart following hardware change

    Date: 10/24/07     Keywords: no keywords

Here's the deal! For the past few days, Vista has paused a bit while trying to load up. Yesterday, it simply would not complete the loading process. The progress bar would hang, and it would either stay there, or the screen would turn black.

Tried dusting out the case. Tried repairing using the Vista DVD. Tried removing all USB devices. Tried removing some PCI devices. Tried a memtest. Tried reinstalling Vista. Tried installing Vista on another disk. Tried removing the original disk. Tried removing a memory stick, and then the other. Tried flashing the BIOS to the latest version.

Every single time I tried one of these things, Vista would boot up once, and work until I restarted it, and it would hang again. So that's my problem: Vista works as long as it detects a change in hardware; otherwise, it hangs on boot. Very weird!

The only remaining thing I can think of is buying a new motherboard, but I'm really not sure if this motherboard's broken. It works wonderfully when Vista is up and running.

Otherwise, I'm flummoxed. Has anyone heard of anything similar? Is there anything I might be forgetting?

(My desktop's hardware specs are in my profile.)

  10. Stuff working in safe mde, not in normal.

Date: 10/23/07     Keywords: software, browser, java, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google

I keep having bizarre computer problems, yet I can't detect any viruses, and the only spyware I had was a couple tracking cookies I get from time to time and I deleted them.

Earlier Word wouldn't open, now it will. Sometimes Spybot and Ad-aware will open, sometimes not. Semagic won't open, I get an error message that says "Can't enumerate device." I've gotten the same error when trying to open Word, but now it works.

And sometimes the things that won't open give me an error message that there is not enough memory to run it, even though I have plenty and recently defragged.

I started my computer in safe mode and everything was peachy. I opened Fix-it Utilities, ran some scans and a registry de-frag, as well as running ad-aware and spybot again. All clean. Restarted the computer in normal and tried to open Fix-it, just to test. Still doesn't work. Neither does Semagic and a couple other random things. And randomly, my internet browser fails. Weather I'm in Opera, IE, or Firefox...they all do it. Half the text and images vanish, some look like they are on top of each other. I don't understand.

I'm pretty sure it must be one thing causing all of this, because it all started two days ago together.

    Any ideas?

This is on an HP PC with Windows XP by the way.

  11. Restoring blank template in Word Mobile

    Date: 10/22/07     Keywords: templates, microsoft

In a frenzy of moving items to my storage card, I apparently deleted my blank template for Word from my Treo 700wx. Of course, I can make up a default template, but Word Mobile seems to be looking for the template in a specific location-- where it isn't. Could anyone tell me where the Templates folder should be on the device, so I can put it back? Or, perhaps you may tell me that what I think will fix things, won't... sigh... I've searched the help files at Palm, Microsoft, and even my carrier, but so far no luck. When I have time I will call tech support, I suppose, but right now I don't have a lot of time to stay on hold--

  12. Firefox hates me!

    Date: 10/20/07     Keywords: browser

I have another FireFox question...stuff seems to be randomly messing up now. I have to ask here because I can't think of how to word it and any way I've tried searching for it and haven't found anything.

One day, I opened FireFox and the bottom bar had jumped way up.

Another thing I noticed in here is that on the bottom left is a small orange upside-down v.

It won't allow me to resize it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It came right back. I got so frustrated with this that I started using Internet Explorer 7, but either my computer is a shade to slow for it, it uses too much memory, or both. It just didn't run as smoothly or quick as FireFox. So please, help me get my FireFox back!

Any other browsers I should consider? Is Opera better than FireFox?

  13. Internet cache memory

    Date: 10/17/07     Keywords: web

Does anyone know where files are downloaded to, when you're surfing the Internet? Like while surfing, your computer has to download images and sometimes you download videos-- is there a place these get downloaded to? I think it's called 'cache'. I looked through a folder called Cookies and another one called Temporary Internet Files but I couldn't find any videos or pictures that I had looked at on a webpage...

  14. Deleting a Vista partition on a dual-boot system

    Date: 10/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

I recently added XP to a Vista-only system at the request of an acquaintance and I would like to delete the original Vista partition and merge it with the current XP partition so as to have an XP-only system. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or is this simply impossible? I was going to back up both the XP and Vista partitions and then try to format the Vista partition using the Windows XP install disk and then reload the bootloaders to the XP partition using the Windows XP install disk. Does this seem like it would work or will I break the computer forever doing this (or at best waste a lot of time?)

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  15. Re: Firefox windows too small

    Date: 10/14/07     Keywords: java

In reference to my last post, I decided to post a picture to see if maybe I'm just saying it wrong. Because all these suggestions SHOULD be working, but aren't!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is an ESPN GameCast page. It pops up when you click the link on their scoreboard page. But, as you can see by examples like the GA cut off middle right, this window SHOULD be bigger. But it won't let me maximize or resize the window. I've tried allowing FireFox to resize java windows, as well as changing the about:config to allow users to resize frames.

I can work around it, opening the scoreboard in an IE tab and then opening the GameCast (this opens the GameCast in a new IE tab, full-size). But, I'd like to be able to see it in a seperate FireFox tab, as that sort of reminds me to check it every so often.

    Thanks for any help.

  16. Connecting to a VPN through a firewall?

    Date: 10/13/07     Keywords: software

Got a problem, and I kind of need to get it solved quick (as in by Monday morning). I'm going to be working from home Monday and Tuesday, and I'm having problems getting the VPN connection to work. When I try, I get the error "the remote computer is not responding." I know the remote computer is on and listening, and I know that the settings on my computer are correct. Tech support believes the problem to be my router's firewall. The router is a Netgear WGR614v6. Netgear's support page does not show what ports need forwarded for this particular router. At present, I have port forwarding enabled for all ports on the system (effectively disabling the firewall), and the problem persists. My cable modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5101; from what I can gather from Motorola's page, the SB5101 does not have a built-in firewall, so I'm assuming that's not the problem. The computer itself is running XPSP2, fully patched, etc. There is no third-party software involved in setting up the VPN connection, it's just set up in Control Panel::Network Connections. According to my company, nothing else is needed (others VPN in all the time this way).

Anyone have any ideas? Or do you need more information?

I keep having printer problems. Everything I print comes out shredded and torn. Any idea of what the problem might be?

  18. Dumb question

    Date: 10/12/07     Keywords: no keywords

Yes, this is stupid, but I've never done this before. How do I transfer a sound file from my computer to my cell phone to use as my ringtone? Note that I don't actually know if my cell phone can play custom ringtones; it's a piece of crap from 2005, and I should probably just buy a new cell phone. But I figure it can't hurt to try and see if it works.

  19. Firefox help

    Date: 10/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

Lately, when I open pages with legitimate pop-over windows (special ads for stores, or ESPN GameCasts), the pages don't open big enough. It's weird...they open in different sizes, but never big enough. Some info is always off the page, and these pop-overs don't have scroll bars.

What settings can I change to allow FireFox to open these pop-over windows as big as they need to be?

  20. Acquiring Network Signal...

    Date: 10/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

I am running Windows XP Home, with a Belkin router and Belkin wireless card. Whenever I try to connect to the internet, it'll say "Acquiring Network Signal." I have an IP Address and it will say that I am connected, but whenever I try to sign into Opera I get an error. It's not a problem with the network; i'm using it right now on another computer. I refreshed the IP address and nothing worked. I refreshed the TCP yesterday and it worked; but today it isn't! I have no idea what to do and I've run out of solutions. Please help!
