1. TV on my PC

    Date: 11/14/07     Keywords: software

Does anyone on here watch TV on their PC? I want to get a card for my PC with software that can record, but Im not sure what to get and the resources on the net just confuse me.
Id also like to plug the Playstation into the PC monitor so I can get rid of the TV altogether.

    Thanks

  2. Fried Mobo on Satellite P25-S520?

    Date: 11/12/07     Keywords: browser, web

Question/Problem: When booting, the computer would load the OS, then immediately shut down. In addition, the A/C power light would flicker on and off, and I'd have to jiggle the power connector to get it to go solid. Now, the computer won't even turn on, and the AC light stays off. I previously lost the cord that went from wall-->brick, so I found another one off of an old stereo that seemed to work. However, I don't know if that caused the mobo to fry. :S

Operating System and VERSION: Windows Vista Beta (I think Version 2)

Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox (I can't remember which version)

Your level of experience: Beginnerish...not a n00b, but not comfortable with hardware.

Duration of problem: Uhm...a long time?

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I tried to see if it was the power brick, but I think it's the inverter on the motherboard. I have a Satellite P25-S520 with a P4 (IIRC) processor, and I *think* 1.5 GHz of RAM. I've had the cover off and had a coworker look at it...he said everything looked good. Is there any way to replace *just* the power inverter on the MB, or am I looking at a whole new setup here? If I'm looking at a whole new setup, is there any way to salvage the processor and RAM off the old MB, or should I just start fresh? Cheaper is better here, as I'm a student...free is best...if someone has a MB that they don't need anymore, I'll take it off your hands. :P

Another unrelated issue is the DVD-RW drive...I need a new one...where's the best place to go for a cheap one? I tried getting one off Fleabay, but it didn't fit. If anyone needs a power brick or DVD/RW drive, I'll gladly sell it. ^_^

(Mods, feel free to edit this post as needed!)

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

  3. Motherboard replacement

    Date: 11/12/07     Keywords: ebay

I'm trying to replace my sister's motherboard from her Dell E510. The actual switch isn't a problem, but!

When I look on ebay, they have different 'P/N' numbers listed. How do I find out what it is on the motherboard I'm replacing? Or does it make a real difference (my sister is NOT a high-end user)

Help! I need to order today!

  4. Desktop and My Computer: odd behaviour

    Date: 11/12/07     Keywords: browser

    Hello all,

    My details
I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavillion laptop, with Firefox as my main browser. I have AVG, Zonealarm, Spybot and Adaware, and I last ran Spybot last night (it found one entry - Statcounter - which I fixed).

I'm fairly ignorant about technical matters, but reasonably comfortable with things like editing the registry if someone talks me through in detail.

    My problem
I decided to tidy up my desktop today, and started deleting shortcuts that I never use. Some of them deleted no problem, but I've run into something weird with others. When I try to delete, it gives me the customary 'this deletes the shortcut, not the program' message, but then flashes up an error message: 'Cannot delete . Access is denied. Make sure the disc is not full or write-protected and the file is not in use.'

This is happening with shortcut icons for Windows Live Messenger, Readerware, Firefox and AVG. It deleted the ones for Internet Explorer, CCleaner and Semagic without any problems.

I've also run into another problem which may or may not be connected. When I open up 'My Computer', the 'My Documents' icon is missing from the main view. It's still there in the sidebar, and I can access it no problem, but where the icon usually shows up under 'Files stored on this computer' I only have 'Shared documents'.

Any ideas? These are both minor problems in themselves, but I'm slightly concerned they are symptoms of something more sinister.

    Thanks in advance!

  5. Question about Acer quality

    Date: 11/12/07     Keywords: web

Yo! I could use everyone's help on this. I am looking into getting an Acer laptop (here) but I have read some really off-the-wall reviews around the web (Amazon, Newegg, et cetera.)

The basic question is, are Acer computers any good? Some folks say they have problems with heat (to the point of melting, supposedly), bad customer service (not too big a concern), faulty AC adapters, spongy keyboards (wtf?), the list goes on. Many also complain about Windows Vista being a resource hog, I am assuming I will have to downgrade. Which leads to my side-questions: A.) Will downgrading to XP be a huge trouble or really even necessary? B.) Will the laptop given be enough to run Half-Life 2 and Civ 4 decently? I mainly want it as an upgrade to my computer (the laptop is roughly twice as powerful given the specs) so that I can play a handful of games that I own but can hardly play. The rest of its use will be internet, movies, music, and other simple things.

    So.. thanks in advance!

  6. Internet Connection Problem

Date: 11/10/07     Keywords: virus, web, spyware, google

    (x-posted to computerhelp)

After moving and switching DSL plans, I've started to have some trouble with my internet connection. Some websites, such as google and LJ, will load fine. But others, like Wikipedia, won't load at all. The status bar will say 'Waiting for (website)...' but then it just doesn't load. Yesterday it said 'Website found, waiting for reply...'. Everything was fine on the 2nd before I moved, but it's been like this since I set everything back up on the 8th. I'm running Windows Vista with IE7, but I'm having the same problem with Firefox and Opera. I contacted my ISP and they said my connection was fine; they told me to call my computer manufacturer. So I called them and they told me to do a System Recovery. I'd rather not do that if there are other things to try, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

Could the problem be the fact that I changed service plans? My ISP didn't say anything, although I'm pretty sure the tech. I talked to didn't know much about computers other than how to read a troubleshooting manual. Same with the computer manufacturer tech.

Things that have already been suggested:
    Delete Temporary files/cookies
    Delete Temporary Internet Files folder
    Check for viruses/spyware/adware
Try logging on on a different account
Resetting IE back to default settings
    Disable Firewalls/anti-virus programs

    Anybody have any ideas?

  7. iTunes question

    Date: 11/10/07     Keywords: no keywords

Sometimes I'll delete whole folders of music I don't listen to, but I don't bother to delete them from my iTunes, so I have a bunch of the little exclamations all over my itunes when I click on things I deleted..Is there any way to remove all of the "empty" music titles in one mass action, because I have lots..

I'm 99.9% sure the problem is opnmjgf.dll, which pops up in both O2 and O20. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, including flagging it to delete on reboot in HT, it keeps coming back, and I've no idea how to get it to go away permanently. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  9. Anyone here good at reading HijackThis logs?

    Date: 11/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

Something is trying REALLY, REALLY HARD to pump BHOs onto my system at an alarming rate-- as in, forty or fifty a minute. Spybot's auto-deny is working overtime.

I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot over it multiple times, and done everything I know how to do from running HijackThis, but it's pretty obvious I'm missing something. I'll post the HT log if anyone here knows about such things...

  11. Macro in Windows Sparked from Connecting External Device

Is there a program that will automatically run a macro when I plug in an mp3 player? I'd like to copy/paste a directory in my mp3 player to my computer automatically when I connect my mp3 player to my computer. All the software I've found so far edits a .ini file for autoplay on a cd rom.

  12. I Iz iTunes Stoopid

    Date: 11/05/07     Keywords: no keywords

I recently came into possession of an iPod. I downloaded iTunes a couple of days ago so I would be able to put my music onto the iPod. I downloaded the program and started to import my pre-existing library from my external harddrive. After I realized how much space on my old and already-slow laptop the imported songs were taking, I halted the process, closed iTunes, and uninstalled the program, thinking it would free up the space again. Which it didn't. I went through all my program folders to find where the imported songs are still lurking, but I couldn't find them.

Where does iTunes automatically dump all the songs it imports for its music library and how do I remove them? Once they are located is it a simple matter of deletion if iTunes has already been uninstalled from my laptop, which is running Windows XP?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

I know this is probably a stupid question to most of you, but basically I need some instructions.

    I have a website, and I uploaded a file(an mp3) to it via FTP.

How do I turn this file into a website/direct download?

Be gentle, I'm new at this!

    Date: 11/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

Hopefully someone can help me with this, cause I'm not that computer saavy....

Firefox automatically updated itself tonight, and now when I try to use it it says "unable to connect." If I open up IE, I get an internet connection just fine.

I would just continue using IE, but the problem with my IE is that it freezes up if I need to open a pop-up window. This is the reason I began using Firefox in the first place.

I've gone on some of the Mozilla help forums and have seen that other people have had similar problems. I have messed around with my firewall settings and nothing seems to help. I'm really upset about this because I'm taking an online class right now and really need to be able to open pop-ups.

Please help me if you can.

  16. Mouse Trouble

    Date: 11/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

Alright, so for some reason, my mouse has started acting a little weird. Lately, it's sort of stopped working. Well, it'll still go left and right, but not up, down, or any other direction aside from left and right. I've had to keep unplugging and plugging it back in again for it to work for a few seconds. It seems to be alright now, but it has been doing this off and on all day. Any idea what the issue could be?

  17. Windows Won't Load

    Date: 11/02/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi,

My roommate bought a used computer online, and I picked it up at the post office today. It came without being loaded with Windows. But I have a Windows Home XP disc with license.

I really wanted to get this up and running before she gets home tonight at 5pm, to surprise her.

I expected to just be able to put the disc in and load windows, but I'm getting this error message.

I'm really at a lost as to what to do. I tried to follow its suggestion, but I can't seem to figure it out. What could be causing this? And what can I do to fix it?

  19. Windows Vista Issue!

Date: 10/30/07     Keywords: software, virus, antivirus, microsoft

So glad I found these communities! I am in desperate need of help. Please bear with me; my knowledge of computers is fairly limited.

I run Windows Vista on a Dell Latitude D630. It has a dual processor that runs at 800 MHz. I bought it through my school's bookstore, so it came installed with McAfee Antivirus Software.

    Here's the issue.

Out of the blue - well, at least it looked it to me - I started getting some weird notifications. They say the following:

(Program) has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [ Close Program ]

This is affecting a LOT of the programs on my computer. I first noticed it when I tried to install Audacity and the Install Wizard wouldn't run. I've now noticed that it also affects Quicktime, Internet Explorer, Kodak EasyShare Software, Windows Automatic Updates, Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host, and others. In an attempt to fix the problem, I've done TWO system restores. Neither worked. I've tried to pinpoint what could have caused the problem, but I really can't think of any installations or whatnot that could have triggered it. It's really a bugger... any suggestions?
