Minor Question.
Date: 04/07/06
Keywords: spyware
I dislike internet explorer with a passion. I've been using Firefox for a while now and I love it. The only problem is that these pop ups and spyware keep coming through with IE and I would like to just remove IE from my computer entirely.
so, my question is: Would it be safe to remove IE and if so...how would I go about doing so (I've laready checked the program list and it's not there)?
I'm using windows xp.

Wireless Internet Problem
Date: 04/05/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm currently having a problem with my wireless internet connection.
It worked all through last summer and Christmas, since then I've been using a broadband connection away from home.
Now that I'm back, my laptop is picking up the signal perfectly well, however when I click onto any programs which require internet access it behaves as if I'm not connected to the internet, coming up with blank pages and alert boxes saying, 'Internet Explorer could not open the search page'. Yet my laptop assures me the signal is either very good to excellent.
It seems like my laptop is looking for the broadband cable connection still and completely ignoring the wireless connection or something.
I ran Adaware & Spybot but it found nothing at all apart from cookies, which I've now deleted.
By the way, it's an Acer TravelMate 2700 with Windows XP incase that's any use to people.
I'm not very good with computers I'm afraid. Can anyone offer any help please?
Thankyou very much!

Agghhh
Date: 04/04/06
Keywords: browser, virus, web, spyware
I'm pretty sure my computer has a virus of some sort. Every 5-10 minutes or so, my mouse goes out of control and moves haphazardly all over the screen, that "error" sound beeps continuously (it makes kind of a ripping noise), and my browser closes. Sometimes whatever program it is that's being executed opens up Calculator, or starts creating WinRar archives. It also resizes my windows and if I'm using Word, will put up that "Do you want to save before quitting?" exit prompt. It used to do this very occasionally, but now as soon as I reboot, I have this trouble.
My Symantec anti-virus keeps telling me that it detects Spyware.Apropos.C, so I followed the instructions to get rid of that on the Symantec website (search for the file in my registry and clean it out..I found it and I did) but my computer STILL has this trouble and I have no idea what it is.
Any suggestions that you have are very much appreciated, because this is making me insane.

urgent help. computer constantly restarts
Date: 04/03/06
Keywords: no keywords
i'd appreciate all the help that i can get.
my computer CONSTANTLY crashes. it has crashed twice while me trying to post in this forum. it's like, i have to have only one program running for it to not crash, but that only lasts about 10 minutes, after ten, it restarts by itself automatically. it's so annoying, i've lost so much work(like school work, etc).
this has been happening for a little over than a month. about two weeks ago, it completely crashed and wouldn't turn on, so my mother changed the harddrive, but that didn't do anything, it still constantly restarts, probably even more now.
i unchecked that automatic restart box, the computer thing is clean, so i don't know WHAT is wrong. i keep getting a blue screen with a bunch of codes, maybe someone knows what they are and mean and could offer me some help?
the most recent one i got an hour ago was:
c0000005 (ox75ea7de7 0x0069f0d8)
and yesterday i got
0x0000008e (0xc0000005, dxbf87b418, 0xf8c115ac, 0x00000000)
win23k.sys
bf87b418 base at bf8000000
date stamp 3d6de5e5
i don't know what this means i just jotted everything down in hopes to finding out how to stop this. HELP ME!! thank you!!

Printing comments in Adobe Acrobat Reader
Date: 03/31/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have a Dell, running Windows XP. I wrote something in OpenOffice, exported it as a PDF, and sent it off to someone. He used Adobe Acrobat to comment on it, sent it back to me, and I opened it in Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0. I now need to print the document with comments. For the life of me, I can't get this to work.
I have tried the seemingly obvious solution: File > Print, Select "Document and Markups" to print. This doesn't work. I can't find anything else in the program Help or on Adobe's site that would explain either why I'm having trouble or what other methods are available to me to print the comments (I would settle for printing the comments separately for the document if need be). Any help you can give me?

Printer problems
Date: 03/31/06
Keywords: web
I recently purchased a Lexmark Z735 printer and the test pages worked fine, the first 2 documents I printed worked well. Now when i print something it gets stuck on 99% and the job gets stuck in the print queue.
I looked on the Lexmark website and found the exact description of the problem and the fix was to enable bidirectional support. I thought that was fabulous and went to fix it but bidirectional support was already enabled and there is no way to ask anyone at lexmark without calling and I really only want to do that as a last resort!
Any ideas on what else I can try?

SEEIN' RED
Date: 03/26/06
Keywords: no keywords
Just stumbled upon this cool community, and I'm in need of help already!
So,here's the delimma-
a few weeks ago I purchased one of those Casio Watch Cameras, and to transfer the pics from the camera to the PC it needs to do it via InfraRed.
So,Since my PC doesn't have the infrared thingy already in it,they also sent me an adapter that connects to a serial port.Well, after connecting it and trying to find a driver for it(it seems that the latest driver is for Windows 2000,but I have XP),it doesn't work,so I ordered a Casio Pad-5 USB IR adapter that is supposed to work, but the company I ordered it from is out of stock and who knows when itll be available.
So today,I picked up a $20 USB IR adapter from Fry's.The odd thing is,it recognises the camerawatch, even by name,on my system tray, but when I try to upload pictures from it,the program(the one that came with the watch)comes up with an error messege-"can't find camera-check IR ports.
Aaaarrrggghhh! It seems so close-yet so far away.
So,in short,it knows the watch is there, recognizes the model type.but I can't seem to access it.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? How do I access the pics on my camera watch with my USB Infrared adapter?
There's...got...to...be...a...way......

wireless question
Date: 03/26/06
Keywords: no keywords
normally i'm on the other side of the help questions, usually helping at least some...but i have a question. wireless cards showing signal strength changing all the time. using the same laptop, i've had 2 different speed wireless pcmcia cards, and 2 different wireless routers. One set was slower and now a high speed set. I can be using my laptop wirelessly 6 inches from the router or across the room, and the stupid bubble pops up telling me my connection is good, bad, excellent, shitty, whatever, over and over. Why won't it just connect, stay good and not give me crap? only set up beyond changing password was only hooking it up, it connects and goes. no other wireless systems are found when i turn my router off. anybody got some insight for me to check or try?

Hi,
Does anyone know of any good compression programs for DVD files. I am looking to compress DVD movies that are normally 6+ GB in size down to 4 gb or so. I have heard that there are programs out there for this but I am unaware of the names of the common few. Would anyone have any insight on this or let me know of any good recommendations?
Thanks for any input in advance!

lost data recovery

Keywords: no keywords
Hi - last night my computer froze and as far as i could tell there was nothing i could do other than push the reset button, a bad idea obviously as now when i try to access my e: drive i get messages saying i need to format it. Fortunately my OS and everything is running off the C drive and I spent many hours playing with the data recovery program findntfs, and this is where my question comes: when i run the program, i can tell i have the right hard drive number, and everything seems to be ok while it is 'searching', but when it comes to the part where it should be running through the names of all the files on the disk, it simply says "Valid cluster KB not found"
if anyone could let me know what this means and how to get around it i'd really appreciate it. i'd really love to be able to restore the files as i have both valuable and sentimental things stored. and if i can't get em back well i at least need CLOSURE
thanks

Charging problem
Date: 03/18/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi there. I'm getting really fed up with my laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite L25-S119, purchased at CompUSA around Christmas of '05. Bad brand + bad store = bad computer. I didn't have a say in the matter, unfortunately.
What this thing does is... well, how to explain... it randomly decides to stop recognizing that it's plugged into a power source and starts running on battery power.
The first time this happened in January, I didn't notice it was on battery power until it was too late. The computer went into hibernation and would not come out of it no matter what I did. I took it to CompUSA for repairs and they couldn't figure out what's wrong with it, so they shipped it to Toshiba. The aforementioned idiots determined that it wasn't a problem with the battery or adapter (as I thought), but rather with the motherboard. Hooray. Nearly 2 months later (after being promised 2 weeks at most), I get it back and it works. Whoopee. This was in mid-February.
Now it's March, I've only had the thing back for a month, and it starts pulling the same crap again. It'll recognize that it's plugged in sometimes if I unplug it and then plug it back in. Also, it seems to 'dislike' being in certain positions. For example, it forgets it's plugged in when I pick it up, but when I set it back down it starts charging again. Also the battery indicator light is glowing yellow, even though the battery is 100% charged and when the battery is full it's supposed to glow green.
I can get it to charge if I put it at sort of an angle. But as you can imagine that's hard to do when I'm trying to use it. :/
Any ideas what the problem could be? X-posted at computertalk. Thanks.

A Serious Problem
Date: 03/18/06
Keywords: browser, web
Here's my problem. Usually 1 to 5 minutes after signing on to the internet, all open windows and running programs on my computer shut themselves down leaving me with a view of my desktop. Then a few seconds later, all icons on my desktop and the bar at the bottom disappear leaving me with just the background image of my desktop.
At this point there is nothing I can do except manually turn the computer off. Even pressing ctrl-alt-del doesn't bring up the task manager or anything. I can still see and move the mouse arrow, but that's it.
The first time this happened I had recently played Quake 2, and had messed around with the video settings. So initially I thought that had something to do with it. I restored my computer to a checkpoint from last month so any changes resulting from that would be undone, yet it still shuts down every time I use the internet.
Then I noticed my computer was only doing this when I signed online. As long as I stay offline I'm fine. So this makes me suspect it's a problem with Internet Explorer. Now, recently I also pissed off the moderator of a certain website. He banned my specific IP address from his site last week, so I'm thinking maybe he also sent something to infect my web browser.
Regardless of why this is happening, I would like to try deleting Internet Explorer completely from my computer and either reinstalling it or another browser like Firefox. However there are two problems with this.
1. I can't download Firefox because before it finishes downloading my computer shuts down.
2. I can't figure out how to remove Internet Explorer from my computer. It seems to be integrated into the OS. (I use windows XP)
Does anyone have any ideas on why this problem is happening or what I need to do? I can't even stay online long enough to make a livejournal post. I had to use my dad's computer to post this.

password issues on appleworks
Date: 03/09/06
Keywords: no keywords
hello...
i'm running mac OS X and a few months ago, i put password locks on some of my documents. i used a password that i use for a lot of things so there was no way i'd forget it. but i tried to open one of them a few days ago and it kept saying the password was wrong. i tried everything i could think of and nothing worked. all the others that require passwords are fine; the password works and everything. but i don't know what to do about the one that won't open. i tried to figure out how i could change it or...find out what the password must be set as, but i can't. i've been using a mac for a year now and i've figured a lot of stuff out but i still am not nearly as familiar with this operating system as i am with windows so it's harder for me to get to the bottom of things. so if anybody can suggest anything, i'd be very grateful.
also, if anyone knows if there's a way to password protect documents that open in, like, text edit...that would be awesome. thanks.
