Wireless Problems
Date: 05/10/06
Keywords: no keywords
We've had our DSL hooked up to wireless for a while (with 3 laptops in the house it IS needed). The main computer (the one DSL is attached to...) is upstairs in my parents bedroom. Whenever the phone rings and someone picks up the phone downstairs the DSL goes off and won't work until said person gets off the phone AND we turn on the phone upstairs and let it sit for a while (you can see how much of a hassle this is). I was wondering why that happens and what I can do to fix it?

spyware

does anyone know of a program that will get rid of Spyware Quake?
I got hit with it the other day and have been having a horrible time trying to rid my computer of it.
I've had some programs find parts of it, but it still has a flashing virus alert on my taskbar to try and get me to buy their program.

flickering laptop monitor
Date: 05/03/06

My laptop's monitor is starting to flicker osmetimes. It wouldn't always do it, but there would be times where it would flicker for a minute or so and then it'll be fine for awhile, and then later on it'll flicker again. This only started happening in the last few days.
I have a slightly older laptop - I had mine since 2002. Is it possible the monitor might be dying?
I have HP Pavilion ZT1000.
Yes it's old, but I'm frugal and it still works for the most part.

Pdf
Date: 05/02/06
Keywords: java
Still working on those Java issues, but in the meantime, I'm having some problems opening up some of my pdf files. I had previously been storing a bunch of my pdf files on a CD-RW. One day I tried to open the files and my computer froze or something. At any rate, now when I try to open those files, I get this message: Adobe Reader could not open filename.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or beacause the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
I'm thinking my problem is the files were damaged somewhere along the way. Can I fix them??
Thanks

Java

OK, my Java is driving me NUTS! There are certain sites/programs that I can't open (e.g. Yahoo's Pagebuilder), and the suggestion is always to update/install Java. So I do that, and the installation verification tests or whatever always say that everything's working properly, that I have the latest version installed on my computer, and I can always see the little animation that is supposed to confirm that I do indeed have Java correctly installed. So why are there still some things I can't open?! :\

Creating a link/toolbar button in Internet Explorer.
Date: 04/28/06
Keywords: software, java, web
I'm currently a Firefox user, but have some people I know attempting to get me to switch back to using IE. (This is getting as ludicrous as the PC/Mac debate.) So I'm currently running an IE7 beta.
Question. I have a toolbar button for Firefox that runs a small Javascript script that will take info from an Amazon.com webpage and feed it into my local library's search engine. (For those of you who wish to see the script, it's javascript:var%20re=/([//-]|is[bs]n=)(/d{7,9}[/dX])/i;if(re.test(location.href)==true){var%20isbn=RegExp.$2;void(win=window.open('http://catalog.clevnet.org'+'/web2/tramp2.exe/do_authority_search/guest?SETTING_KEY=CLEVNET&English&location_group_filter=all&servers=1home&index=&query='+isbn,'LibraryLookup','scrollbars=1,resizable=1,location=1,width=575,height=500'))} ; as long as your library uses the same software program-- which I used to know the name of, but mine have taken it off the software altogether-- it shouldn't require a huge amount of customization.) When I try to create an IE toolbar button (in the links toolbar) with the same script, it first tries to assign it to a search.msn.com page, then to http://javascript.internet.com, then tells me "javascript is not a valid URL protocol."
Is there any way to get a toolbar button to run a script under IE? (This would be a showstopper for my going back to IE; I use that button in Firefox at least twenty times a day.)
Thanks.

MSN

When talking to some friends on MSN I see them use animated pictures instead of certain letters or words.
I can copy these pictures to my own MSN by right-clicking on them and use them myself.
But I can't figure out how to use the pictures I come across online. Is it possible, if yes, how can I make them show?
(I tried saving them on my computer but in that case they don't move anymore when they appear in msn).
Thank you.

Flash Help SWF players?
Date: 04/25/06
Keywords: no keywords
I downloaded a couple of SWF movies, that have singing, dancing and moving people. I was watching them on a site, but I'm on 56K and figured it'd be easier to download them and watch them later.
They played on the site, but won't play now that I have them DLed. I can get the audio, but not the video. I have Flash 5, and I tried to download updates, but I can't seem to be able to download a standalone Flash player that isn't version 5.
Any help?
I'm running Windows ME.
I just don't understand why I can play it on the site, and not on my comp. Maybe there is a way to rig up the site's player so that I can load my own SWF movies into it?
Please help anyone if you can.

Question?
Date: 04/24/06
Keywords: no keywords
I've been trying to get screencaps, and I'm getting so frustrated!
I have Windows XP. I've been using Windows Media Player, Real Player, and InterVideo WinDVD. I pause the screen, hit Print Screen, and paste it into Paint Shop.
What happens is, it won't let me crop. It pastes the whole desktop, and when I crop it, the image just keeps panning. I can't crop just one section.
I hope this makes sense, but I doubt it does! Anyway, does anyone have tips, or know of a (free) program I can use?
By the way: I have already decreased acceleration speed, turned off the "Use Overlays" option...nothing works.
And, in case none of that makes any sense: I just want to get a screencap, and I need to know how. :)

Computer freezing up
Date: 04/20/06
Keywords: spyware
Last year I had a problem with my CD writer. It just stopped working. The red light would come on and it wouldn't open anymore. I stopped attempting to use it since I had a DVD writer and that works fine.
The past couple of days while I'm using my computer I'll hear noises coming from the area of this unusable CD drive and the red light will be on. It's like it's trying to be used but I'm not doing anything that would be using it. During this time the computer will freeze up for about 15 seconds. This will continue every few minutes until I reboot. I'm on Windows XP.
I've run my spyware and it still occurs. I've looked through the running processes and don't see anything too unusual there. What is ctfmon.exe? That is the only thing running that I don't really recognize.
Thanks for any suggestions.

OS Startup Problem
Date: 04/12/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi,
I recently started to have this problem in my OS (XP Home):
After booting up, and getting through the windows loading screen, my logon screen doesnt show up. Instead, it's just a black screen with a mouse cursor thats able to move around and nothing else happens. I tried booting up in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and safe mode with command prompt, but the same occured for all three.
Only rarely does it boot up correctly and I'm able to log in, thus the reason I'm posting on here.
Do any of you have any suggestions on what to do for this problem? or should I just contact the tech support?
System:
Dell Inspiron 700m notebook (if it helps)
Thanks in advance for any responses/suggestions.

Paint Shop Pro 10 help

Keywords: no keywords
Okay, I was trying to make a collage in Paint Shop Pro 10 by first selecting "New" and selecting the size of the new image, then I go on to put in the new images by resizing, cropping, and then copying & pasting, it saves fine the first time, but when I try to save it a second time, it locks up and I have to use CTRL+ALT+DELETE every time to get out of it. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling this once and it has not worked.

Installation interruption and Windows reactivation?
Date: 04/08/06
Keywords: virus, antivirus
I'm using a PC running Windows XP x64. I've been having trouble with the Live Update on my antivirus (Symantec AntiVirus 64), so I decided to do an uninstall and reinstall to try to fix it... only when I try to reinstall, I keep getting an error that says the installation was interrupted. I had uninstalled everything Symantec from the computer and restarted, so I'm not sure why it would be doing that (I even tried starting up in diagnostic mode, but the install wizard is apparently unavailable when you do that). In addition to that, since the uninstall Windows has been requesting reactivation. Every time the computer starts up I get a message saying that the computer's hardware has been changed drastically since installation and that because of it Windows has to be reactivated within three days. Not that reactivation is a huge deal, but there has been no hardware change since my last reformat, which was about a month ago when I upgraded to XP x64. I reformat at least a few times a year, and I know after so many times you have to start calling in the activations... I guess I just want to delay having to do it that way. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Wireless help.
Date: 04/07/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm new to this, so I have a couple of questions.
- Does me router/adapter have to match my modem's top speed in mbps?
I have a cable internet connection, that usually gets speeds of 1.5 mbps, but the modem can get up to 100 mbps.
- What's the best wireless router/adapter I can get on a budget?
I've got a budget of 200, but I don't want to go that high if possible. Also, I'm more interested in getting a USB adapter. I don't really want to open up my tower.
Thanks in advance.
