CD driver deleted
Date: 10/05/05
Keywords: no keywords
Recently on our old Pentium II/ Win 98 PC, my mom installed a printer that is also an external hard drive. The printer took the drive name D:, which was previously the name of our CD drive (40x speed, if that makes a difference). My mom renamed the printer to E:, but the computer still could not find a driver for the CD-ROM. The catch is, I can't download a driver, because the drive came with the computer which is a discontinued model from a company (Patriot) that went out of business ages ago. Does anyone know where I could get a generic CD-ROM driver that would work?

stupid casino crap
Date: 10/01/05
Keywords: no keywords
I got this crappy program called "riverbelle casino" installed on my comp somehow, and I can't uninstall it. Using the "Add/remove" programs just leads me to a page called "Uninstall questionnaire RBC" and when I finsh the "survey", I get a non-working "continue" button that does nothing.
So, I don't know how to uninstall it. I have no idea why they made such a problematic uninstaller that leads to a PAGE rather then just a uninstall. I don't want to take a stupid survey, I want to uninstall!
Any ideas?
Thanks!

My stupid SBC dsl is going up/down every 4~5 minutes

My stupid SBC dsl is going up/down every 4~5 minutes (I timed it.)
there are 4 lights on my DSL modem - pwr, dsl, act, enet. If the DSL line is not solid green, then the DSL does not work.
It usually works fine, but i've restarted a bunch of times and turned off the modem, checked cables .. etc, but it doesn't seem to help. After the DSL light goes off, it takes about 80 seconds to get back up to solid green. Then the connection works for 4~5 minutes, then goes down again.
GRR .. stupid SBC.
Does anyone know what the issue is? this is really annoying, especially when chatting or trying to surf. Thanks!

Backlight for laptops running Windows XP?
Date: 09/27/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi all,
Just seen this community and I have a question which I'm hoping someone here will be able to answer for me.
I have a Compaq Presario 2100 (if that's even relevent) laptop running Windows XP and I have always used it at home, so I've always had it connected to the power supply. That way, there's always been a lovely, bright backlight on the screen, but I've noticed that when I disconnect the power supply and run it from the battery, the light goes off, and the screen is much, much darker. I assume this is an attempt to save power, which is fair enough, but my problem is, sometimes I literally cannot see the screen. I'm posting from a coffee house right now, where I'm connected to their wireless network, and it's very difficult to see what I'm typing, even. I've looked for an option to turn on some kind of light, and also to adjust the contrast, but I can't find anything.
Is there some way I can fix this?
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!

Motherboard or CPU
Date: 09/27/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have an older computer that I had built 3 years ago. This is what it has:
Athlon XP 2600
Abit NF7-S v1.0
160gb Western Digital EIDE
standard cd/dvd rom and cd-rw
250W PSU
Kingston PC2700 DDR
One day it would stop going through POST, it would get to the point right before it detects all IDE drives and such and it just stops beforeh and and hangs in infinite. After fooling around with various devices inside the computer, I got it to pass that point but then it would say "CPU is Unworkable." Ok wonderful, so therefore I took out the processor, wiped it clean of thermal compound. No signs of damage. I reapplied some high quality thermal compound and now when I boot up, the screen doesnt even respond. I was going to re-reseat the processor but I dont want to do that for nothing, the compound isnt cheap. Should I treat this is as a motherboard issue or a CPU issue? Thanks

Game issues

I am trying to play the demo for Star Trek: Elite Force 2. But I can't play the game for more than 10 minutes without one of the following 3 things happen.
1) A hiccup...10-20 stoppage before the game resumes.
2) Total freeze...the game freezes completely. The SOUND is still playing but I can't move the player and nothing on screen is moving. Escape, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Del, none of them work. I have to manually restart the PC with the systems power button.
3) Crash...a complete system crash and reboot.
As far as I can tell, my PC meets the specs.
Win 98/2000/Me/XP - Check, XP
600MHz Processor - Check, 3200+ AMD Athlon
128MB RAM - Check, 512MB DDR SDRAM
32MB Video Card - Check, 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6200
1.3GB HDD Space - Check, 200GB HDD.
So why is my PC balking at this demo?

No internet connection
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hello,
I've got a Windows 98 SE computer that recently as been giving me internet connection problems. When I try to connect to the internet with dial-up and my ISP (peoplepc), it dials the number, verifies the name and password, and then when it is about to authenticate the connection, the screen turns blue and I get this error:
An exception OE has occurred at 0028:CF95F292 in VxD WIN95AC. This was called from 0028:C001A4F8 in VxD NDIS(01) + 0000274C. It may be possible to continue normally.
So then when I try to connect using the Dial-up Networking folder, I get error 633:
The modem is not installed or configured for Dial-Up Networking.
To check your modem configuration, double-click the Modems icon in Control Panel
But my modem is installed perfectly and is listed and detected. And I can't use the internet at all since this happened. Can anyone help? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Help!
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
i posted last month with problems, and i got some helpful advice, unfortunately nothing has really worked. here's the deal:
i built a computer:
Abit KV7 mobo
Athlon XP 3000+ w/heatsink/fan combo
(1 chip) 512MB PC3200 RAM
GeForce FX5500 256MB Video Card
Seagate 250gig HD (primary)
Maxtor 30gig HD (secondary)
Memorex 52X CD-RW
1) build # 1 - at first it turned on for half a second then autoshutdown along with the mobo error beep meaning "damaged/unseated/overheating CPU". turned out the heatsink was turned round, fixed that, but it wouldn't run the CPU at full speed. flashed the BIOS, reset the CMOS, but that didn't fix the problem, but the computer would boot and run. this was the only time i had a functioning computer, but it was running at 1.3ghz not 2.16ghz.
2) build #2 - replaced the mobo. this time no matter what it would autoshutdown with the same mobo error beep as before. everything was installed correctly and the fan was working correctly. never got it to boot at all.
3) build #3 - replaced the CPU. same as before. only turns on for half a second, then gives the mobo error.
anyone have any ideas?
x-posted a lot.

Intervideo WinDVD 5 Gold
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: software
Hey all.
Just hoping for a a few tips, maybe a little insight into a problem I'm having with WinDVD 5 Gold.
I purchased this software, own the original disc, and for the most part...the program works ok.
However, there are a few random dvds that, when played on WinDVD, the picture is completely black. There is audio, I can tell the menus are being navigated to, but just no picture. Ironically this only happens with my absolute favorite dvds - (Velvet Goldmine and The Adventures of Pete and Pete Season One *headsdesk*) Other dvds seem to play fine. NTSC and PAL formats both play fine...I can't really figure out what might be different with those two dvds other than I want to watch them more than my other ones. ;)
Now when I go to close WinDVD, there is a brief image of whatever should be visible - as in whatever screen the dvd has navigated to. Usually a main menu. But on restarting the program, nothing improves.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the program, but for some reason I get a "Socket Error" telling me that critical files are missing and to please insert the original disc for uninstall. Of course, I'm at a loss because I am using the original disc purchased retail.
Note: I don't know if this makes a difference, but none of the boxes under the "video" tab of my player's Setup are checked.
I've contaced Intervideo several times and they've proved only somewhat helpful. I'm really not looking forward to going through all that mess again, so I thought I might seek a few opinions here in hopes of solving my problem before diving into another long customer service quest.
If you need any details about my computer and such, just lemme know. I really appreciate the feedback.
Thanks in advance!

my computer skips... HELP!!!!!!!!!
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: virus
So I unplugged a perfectly fine computer from home and brought it to my school... plugged it into all the lines that my old computer was plugged into. For some odd reason this computer from home is skipping. Whenever I have a lot of programs open and/or when I'm near or at 100% of CPU usage under ctrl-alt-del, my computer just freezes for a split second. IT is ESPECIALLY annoying because I have music on 24/7 and it skips like a mofo... I know it's not because of the low RAM because only 4 days ago when I was using this computer at home, it was running BEAUTIFULLY. So what is the reason? Is it the different power cord? Did something fall out of the computer during the move? Do I have a virus? I would appreciate ANY help! Thanks in advance!

my roommate has a 54 Mbps NETGEAR WGR614 v4 wireless router but has lost the installation cd, the router is installed and working on her computer from when she first got the thing but we have no idea how to install the plug-in usb part on my computer without any installation software.

it says new hardware found when we insert the usb wireless thing and tries to search for "cohiba 3887 rev0"
both computers are running on Windows XP and we are trying to set up a home (wireless) network. also we have DSL.

My computer has many USB ports. There are some in the back and some in front. But when I try to use the front ports, nothing happens. Is there a way I can activate it?
(There are also holes which are for microphone and earphones at the front, which would be very convenient if I could use them.)

Dell Latitude C640 Power Supply Issues
Date: 09/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
As the subject says, I have a Dell Latitude C640 laptop and I seem to be having some power issues. This could be completely unrelated, but just as a bit of background, the wall outlet it was plugged into looks like it died sometime over the weekend. I didn't notice until Tuesday morning when I also started having troubles with the laptop. It keeps shutting off randomly throughout the day - probably 4 or 5 times each yesterday and today. Try to turn it back on and absolutely nothing. Try again a bit later and it starts up fine.
I first thought it was maybe the ac adaptor, but the laptop won't power off the battery (100% charged) either. The light on the adaptor is on and I've unplugged/replugged/jiggled just to make sure.
Any suggestions? I'm wondering if this is something worth fixing or if it's time to replace the whole thing (it's probably 4-5 years old). Thanks for any help :)

If so, could you please send me them. Many thanks in advance.
