1. it won't work

    Date: 09/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

I know very little about computers and this should be fairly simple, while living at home i was able to download music no problem, now that i have moved out, i still use the same computer, and still have Shaw internet, but there seems to be some sort of a problem and it takes forever to download the music, Resulting mostly in it not being downloaded. Is this a problem with the bandwidth, and if so how do i fix it?? Thanks in advance

  4. Network issues

    Date: 09/04/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have an old thinkpad (running 98) that I'm working on, and I'd like to get it networking. I set up the card(an etherjet PCMCIA card) and plugged her into the network. It gets an IP (using ipconfig), and my router sees it. My xp computer sees it, but can't access it. I can't ping it, nor ping out from it (request timed out'd)

My question is, WHAT THE HELL? whhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyy won't it work, or only work a little bit? it's no use that way u_u

    Thanks in advance, ya'll

  5. Flash Drive Fried?

    Date: 09/04/05     Keywords: no keywords

Here's the whole sad story: I spilled a large amount of liquid (Yoo-Hoo to be exact) on my HP Pavilion dv1000. The computer shut down and won't start back up - that I know is to be expected. I did take out the fan and dried the keyboard and it still won't start.

But here is where my question is - at the time I had a flash drive (geek squad) in the usb port. The liquid did not spill on it, however I can not access it on my desktop or work laptop. Was this somehow fried by a power surge or something? Any way that I could get the information off there?

  6. AIM + campus connection = trouble?

    Date: 09/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

I got most of my major computer issues straightened out since landing on campus, but one still lingers: AIM. Most of the time it'll tell me "Connection lost. Try again." when I try to log in, and now and then it'll actually log in. When it does, it's iffy on direct connecting and file sharing. Though I'm not very fond of AIM this is how I keep up with what's going on with my partner and how I get a lot of work done. I suspect there's a firewall issue at hand, as this only started when I got to campus. Suggestions?

  7. ugh, big Windows XP problem

    Date: 09/02/05     Keywords: software, microsoft

For the past couple days, my computer had been freezing 1-5 minutes after Windows started. I went to Microsoft's homepage and they suggested a clean boot, which i performed, and still it froze after about a minute. I decided to try starting it in safe mode to determine if it was a problem with Windows at all or a problem with the computer itself (which is a junk E-machines PC from 2002.). Like the Microsoft homepage suggested, I changed the setting in Run> MSCONFIG so it would start automatically in safe mode, rather than booting in safe mode with F8. Now the computer is stuck on a loop of trying to start, not being able to and restarting.

The screen says this: Sorry for the inconveience, but Windows did not start sucessfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.) I have no idea what to do. If anyone has any ideas at all, please help. Then, there's a menu for several different safe modes, the last good configuration, and start Windows normally. none of these load all the way to windows and the computer will restart and return to this screen.

If there's nothing that can be done aside from wiping the whole thing clean and reinstalling Windows, is there any way i can get my files/programs off the hard drive first? or are they lost forever?

  9. New- Need help with Networking a Scanner

    Date: 09/02/05     Keywords: asp

    Hello all,
I recently purchased an EPSON all-in-one printer/scanner/copier and it's set up fine and everything... It was installed on my boyfriend's computer and then I added it as a network printer on my computer so I can print fine from here (we're on a router). Now, my problem is...how can I scan from MY computer? Or can I do it with this one? I know we did it at work but that was a much different type of scanner/printer/copier. I couldn't find any info on the net or in the manual to network the scanner aspect of it...or if it's even possible.

Does anyone know how or have any suggestions??

    Thanks!

If anyone can help me or direct me to where I can get help it would be much appreciated.

  12. problem with msn messenger

    Date: 08/30/05     Keywords: web, ebay

i've got a little problem with msn. up until last night everything worked fine. i usually use msn explorer as opposed to internet explorer too, and have never had any problems.
so last night i signed in for five minutes, and then signed out, everything's fine. a little while later my brother goes to use it and suddenly it's not working and i'm receiving this pop up: Signing in to MSN Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. 800b0001.

i tried to sign in a few more times later and i got this message again, along with another pop up that said something along the lines of it being a problem cause by either theirs or my connection.

so i couldn't log into msn explorer, and instead went to internet explorer. which worked, except when signing into hotmail, the main page would show up fine but as soon as i tried to log in, i got a cannot find server page.
the only other site this happened with was eBay. everything else was fine.

we rang our interent providery person and they told us to do a few things, none of which worked. i ended up getting mozilla firefox at the advice of the help person.
so now i can log into hotmail and what not, but msn is still not working. i uninstalled the version we have and installed it again via the website, but it seems to be worse/slower than the old one. gah.

i know of at least one other person this is happening to.

so is it msn that's screwy or is my computer munted?

    thanks, Haylor.

  13. Wireless Network

    Date: 08/29/05     Keywords: technology

Hey there guys. As the subject indicates, I have a Wireless Networking question.

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with the misses. The cable modem is in my room, and her computer is about 24 feet away. I installed a Netgear 108 Mbps Wireless Router in my room and 54 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapters in each PC. I am running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario, she is running Windows 98 on an EMachines.

I am getting a strong steady connection (no surprise there, seeing as my wireless card is all of a foot away from the wireless router) of 54.0Mbps. As the crow flies, the connection has to go through 2 walls to get to her computer. She is getting a connection, but it is only between 11 and 48 Mbps. She apparently is not sustaining a strong enough connection because AIM and Internet Explorer aren't working.

Now, the router box says that it has XR Technology that "Delivers extended range up to 400 feet." So why is she getting a weak signal 24 feet away? Is there anything I can do to strengthen the signal?

Note: All the drivers are properly installed and stuff, there were no issues with Windows 98. There IS an internet connection, it's just to weak to do anything. Thanks for the help!

Anyone know why its doing this?

  15. No Gmail

Date: 08/28/05     Keywords: security, virus, antivirus, yahoo, google

I cannot check Gmail. When I try to get to the Gmail.com page, Firefox says "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com . But I can get onto Google just fine, I can't get to Gmail. And I can't log onto Google Talk, either.

I can get onto LJ just fine. I can get on AIM. I just can't check my Gmail.

I was online last night and it worked fine, then my sister got online [which is something I say a lot because it's always after she's on that something goes wrong] and she couldn't get to Yahoo Mail because Norton Internet Security launched the Parental Controls and blocked Yahoo, saying "Norton Antivirus blocked the page http://mail.yahoo.com" or something like that. So I went around and reset the accounts to allow Yahoo Mail and it was fine, so I thought. But when I got back on, I couldn't access Gmail. I cleared my cache, cookies, passwords, history, and rebooted. I ran MSCONFIG and set my startup to run all the programs it ran when I bought the computer, because I'd set it yesterday to not run anything it didn't need to. I thought that would make it better, but I didn't notice a change at all. I tried using IE, Mozilla, and Netscape after that. They all said "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com" except for IE which pulled up a "This page could not be displayed" page.

When I got online this morning, my DSL box said that everything was connected and running, but Firefox would not load anything, AIM would not connect, and Google Talk still wasn't working. I restarted again and tried Firefox again and still no Gmail. LJ is fine, AIM is fine, GTalk is still not working.

Scratch that, GTalk just started working right now and told me I have 7 emails. I tried to check them through a link GTalk, but it said "The page you requested is invalid."

I'm completely stumped. I just bought this computer, a Compaq at Circuit City [I don't remember the model, but it was $374 which was all I had enough for] two weeks ago and have had problems with it since I bought it. I have an old eMachines that ran Win95 when I bought it, and even though it was on the fritz all the time, it is running better than this computer is, but it's not connected to the internet, so that might be what's making it go faster.

Does anyone have any idea what could be blocking me from using Gmail?

[Edit: It is now working, after trying for an hour. I've always had a problem on this computer with it not starting Gmail when I first connect. Is that a normal problem or is there any way to fix it?]

My error messages are enormous. When a program tells me that it has encountered a problem and asks me if I want to send an error report to Microsoft, the message takes up half the screen. The font is huge; I don't know what size it is, but it's huge. I don't know how to change the size of the font. How do you do this?

In addition, Yahoo Messenger is acting strangely. When I try to IM anyone, it shuts down and gives me...sigh...a huge error message. It won't tell me what's wrong or what to do.

  17. hard disk, or power supply?

    Date: 08/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

My computer randomly and suddenly shuts down after a random amount of time. When I try to reboot, I have to turn it off and on again at the wall. If I don't, the monitor won't stay on. When I get it to boot, it starts with this error message: "Hardware Monitor found an error. See the Power setup menu." I chose to continue and it just kept repeating "Remove all media. Press any key to restart." I installed BootIt NG and so can get into Windows again, but the computer keeps dying. BootIt says there's an error on one of my partitions (not the one with windows) but Scandisk didn't find anything. I don't know if the problem is being caused by the power supply or if the hard disk is dying. I'm really worried, I can't afford to simply replace anything. :( Suggestions to locate the problem would be very, very, very much appreciated.

    Memorex 52X CD-RW
Maxtor 30gig HD (my old data drive, no Windows)

I just put the system together. My problem started that I couldn't boot
a Windows XP install disc. The computer would go through the memcheck
and all and then say INVALID SYSTEM DISC, PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE.
But pressing a key gets nothing.

I flashed the BIOS, but that didn't help. Right after flashing the BIOS, I made XP floppy boot discs, but after starting to boot the first floppy it hung on a blank screen with
the cursor flashing in the corner. At first it was sometimes
stopping and beeping (one high pitch, one low) as if the CPU were
overheating, that stopped but now it has been freezing more during the
boot either after the memcheck, the DDR speed check, at the IDE detection or just after that
is done, so I can't always get into the BIOS. The one time I did get into the BIOS, it froze there.

Just now it froze and had a loud, constant beep (a missing CPU error, it seems.) I don't know what to
do. Is my CPU busted? Because if it were, I wouldn't expect the computer to do anything. Is it not booting the disc because it doesn't have the drivers for the CD drive? If so, how do I get that if the
floppy discs don't work? I'm so damn frustrated. Can anyone help?

I spent 7 hours working on this thing yesterday, and I think I may have fucked it up more than when it started. I have the boot sequence right, but the CD doesn't work. The heatsink/fan is seated correctly, but it still seems like either a heat issue because of the way it freezes at different points in the boot. If it were a memory issue, a CPU issue, or now possibly a BIOS issue, I would expect it to freeze at the same point every time. Another random problem is that the startup doesn't always recognize the CPU as an XP 3000+, a lot of the time it is displayed as an Athlon 1300Mhz. There are too many signals pointing to too many different things.

Ug. This is x-posted a lot.
