MS Paint HELP please!!!
Date: 08/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
In the Windows 98 version of MS Paint, when you paste something into the application, it always asked "do you want to resize" etc.
I loved this feature
But now I have XP which doesn't ask and just automatically makes the bitmap the size of whatever the image I'm pasting. As far as I can see there are no "Options" in MS Paint. Perhaps I should be looking outside of the program to change this default? Or does anyone know of the equivalent of a plugin?
Does anyone remember this feature?

Reformatting an old Presario
Date: 08/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have a lot of experience in formatting and reformatting modern computers but my friend recently brought me an older Compaq Presario5050 and I cannot figure out how to do this with XP. This is going to be used as a small scale server at an American Legion Hall, and XP will work on this computer. When I went into the BIOS to change boot order, I came to realize there was no such option. I inspected the BIOS for about 15 minutes and there are very few options in general. How can I configure this so that I can get the computer to boot off of the CD? Thanks

can't burn cds
Date: 08/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi guys. I'm getting this error message:
I'm trying to move files to my dvd drive so I can burn them off. My hard drive is getting full but it's not too full to burn something.
I've tried all sorts of files, none will go to the dvd drive. I've even tried files that I've burned before.
I ran ad-aware and restarted my computer and that's about all I've done so far to try to fix it. I haven't been feeling very motivated lately.
None of the files are being used in another program. The files aren't corrupted or anything. My dvd drive is still able to read dvds. I can move files from folder to folder.
I'm running Windows XP on a Gateway 3522GZ.
Ideas?

Color coding
Date: 08/20/05

Is there anyway on Windows XP to color code folders? In Outlook, is there anyway to color code an email?
How do I make it so when I'm uploading/burning/whatever and watching a DVD in Windows Media Player, the DVD doesn't look like some pirate import skipping about? I mean, is there a way to say that Windows Media Player has like first reserve on RAM or something?
Does anyone know the correct plugin for Winamp that displays in MSN Messenger what song I'm listening
Yes, I'm Bill Gates little Microsoft gimp. I don't think their products are particularly the best. I just dont' have time/money/resources to waste getting a whole new set of programs to do what I'm doing. So if there's any help out there at all, I'd be grateful ;)

Desktop functions disappear!
Date: 08/19/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have this HP pavilion a819n running Windows XP Home Edition, version 5.1. 2600 Service Pack 2. The computer came from someone that is no longer with us and I haven't found a Windows XP CD.
When I boot-up it displays the wallpaper, then the desktop icons but while trying to load the tool-bar all the desktop icons disappear, the toolbar disappears. If you right click on the desktop nothing happens but you can press ctrl alt delete and the Windows Task Manager appears. It usually says Norton is running and sometimes that HP updater, (or something like that,) is also running.
Here is the error message that displays seconds after the computer messes up.
EXPLORER.EXE - Application error
The instruction at '0x747214ba' referenced memory at '0x747214ba'. The memory could not be 'written'.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
Pressing cancel doesn't seem to do anything.
If I press Start on the toolbar when it is there and if I am quick enough I can access the control panel which will work and I have used some icons on the desktop to open the programs and they also work but the Help and Support Program is the only thing I can find that isn't functioning, (other than the destop applications.)
I have tried some tests that the PC Doctor does, like scanning the hard drive for errors but everything checks out ok.
I do have a Compaq Presario that has a Compaq System and Application Recovery Windows XP Home Edition CD but I don't think it would help. Would it?

you guys probably all moan and groan at subject lines like these, but hey, i'm swallowing my pride.
i recently moved into a new apartment. the selling point for my roommate and i was that it has a nice big office we can both work in.
however, upon realizing there is only one power outlet thing in the ENTIRE room, i have been pushed to investigate how we can go wireless, so cords won't be tripping us every 10 minutes.
currently have a dell inspiron and sony vaio, and comcast highspeed cable internet.
what materials do i need? just a wireless router and wireless cards? is it easy to hook up?
can anyone point me to a good easy tutorial? as basic as possible..
thanks loves.

Problems with Flash and WMP
Date: 08/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi, if anyone can help me with these, I'd be grateful.
First of all, I've tried installing Macromedia Flash Player for my Internet Explorer several times, but whenever it reaches the install screen, where it says I have to click on the gold bar to continue, I don't see a gold bar. Here's a screen shot.
Flash works on my Netscape just fine, no problems.
Also, these days, my Windows Media Player just won't play the video for .wmv files. I can hear the audio just fine though, just no video, when I know it's there.
I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, with Service Pack 2 already installed.

New Compaq issues
Date: 08/17/05
Keywords: virus, spyware
I just bought a Compaq desktop this past Sunday and already have problems with it.
My last computer ran Win95 when I first got it, and it ran faster than the computer I've got now. I've had a few issues with the new computer freezing up for a few minutes at a time, and it usually starts working if I sit long enough and wait, but sometimes it doesn't. I'd heard from many people that if you've got Norton, it's constantly running doing something, and it slows the computer down. I don't really have a problem with it since it just popped up to let me know that it found a threat, where the other programs don't pull it up.
Overall, the computer runs really really slow compared to my old one, and I was wondering what actions I could take to keep it from stalling or freezing or just to keep it running faster.
So my questions are:
- Are there programs that help protect me from viruses and spyware, that are better than Norton? If so, what are they?
- How can I get into my settings to change the programs that start as soon as I log on? A friend of mine showed me how a few years ago, but I hadn't needed to use it, so I don't remember the command.
- What can make my computer run faster and stop freezing up?

Blinking = on, right?
Date: 08/17/05

Okay, I have cable Internet with one of those spiffy routers, right. Anywho I was on vacation and my grandparents turned it off so the lights stayed dull.
I got up this morning and the lights were flashing, so I assumed the Internet had been cut back on, so I re-connected the router to my computer.
My grandmom says she didn't turn it on.
So my question is:
When the lights are flashing, that DOES mean that your Internet service is on, right?

CPU/Motherboard Issue...
Date: 08/16/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have a quick question regarding an issue I haven't had much time to look into that I would like to resolve.
I had an EPOX 8K3A+ hooked up with an AMD Athlon 1.6 ghz. socket A chip. The motherboard was about 5 years old and had shot capacitators so I replaces it with an EPOX 8KMM3I-X.
The new motherboard works fine with all the old hardware except the AMD chip is now clocking at 1.2 insted of 1.6ghz.
Is this a compatability issue or can it be corrected in bios?
Any help will be much appriciated.
End.

Volume Control / Webcam
Date: 08/16/05
Keywords: web, yahoo
Howdy.
I seem to be having trouble with the volume/sound on my computer.
I can't hear music, I can't hear sounds, I can't hear anything.
I turn up the volume and nothing happens except a buzzing noise.
I tried to go to start > programs > accessories > entertainment > volume control, to see if there was a problem, but nothing comes up when I click it.
The speakers are plugged into the computer the way they're supposed to be.
Could it be the sound card or something?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second problem is, when I try to use my webcam on MSN messenger, it pauses for a moment and then says:
You have invited [ insert msn name here ] to start viewing webcam. Please wait for a response or Cancel (Alt+Q) the pending invitation.
Your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again.
You have canceled your invitation to start viewing webcam.
But the webcam works perfectly fine on yahoo messenger and PSP.
I am so confused.
Someone please help me, thanks it is appreciated.

2 computers + 1 modem + 1 router = internet connection?
Date: 08/15/05
Keywords: no keywords
I need help hooking up my two computers to my DSL.
I'm using Verizon DSL with a Westell 2200 modem (if that helps), and I got one computer hooked up to my modem and my router (Linksys Wireless-G, 2.4 GHz). Well, now that I have this one computer hooked up properly (obviously, or I wouldn't be typing to you right now, lol), how do I hook up the other so it gets internet access??
Does it hook up to my router? Do I need a super long ethernet cable or something? My other computer is like three rooms away. I don't think I can do that... So how can I do it wireless? Do I need some kind of adapter for my router or for my second computer?
The instructions only showed me how to hook up one computer to this router, not two. So please help me. I'm beyond clueless. :/

won't post
Date: 08/12/05
Keywords: no keywords
what can i expect to see if 1) i turn on my computer with empty DIMM slots? or if 2) i had the wrong kind of memory in? would these two scenarios produce the same result?
i just built a computer and it won't post. i get nothing on my screen (i've tried 2 video cards and 3 monitors); i get no pc seaker beeps; all drives are active (LEDs are on); all front panel connections/LEDs work; the case fan, processor fan, and video card fan turn on.
i've cleared the CMOS several times (by jumpers and battery); i've mounted the motherboard to cardboard (to rule out shorts); i've tried it barebones (only motherboard, memory, video, and front connections). all i can think is that it is 1) a faulty motherboard which i can't test easily 2) it is a faulty processor which i also can't test too easily 3) i have the wrong kind of memory.
would bad memory produce this result? shouldn't it still post and tell me there is no memory installed? shouldn't i at LEAST get the pc speaker to beep some diagnostics at me?
all components are brand new aside from one of the two video cards i tried.
i don't want to pay $40 to troubleshoot this on top of $X to replace the damaged part. help!
UPDATE: i just tried turning everything on with no memory installed. same resutlt. no beeps. no video. nothing.
